    Its called doggy bag because its a bag of your leftovers. In some places, they usually feed their dogs leftovers.

    I did look it up to confirm because I had thought this was the case... but doggie bags were created because, the thought was, that people would take their food home from restaurants and feed it to their dogs. I'm not sure this happens AS often as it used to. It seemed like it was something that evolved during the world wars in the U.S. so there was some food scarcity. But sorta interesting history.
    Also, I LOVE cilantro and love to have it in a lot of different dishes (Mexican, Thai and Chinese food) but I heard that they have connected the "soup" taste to genetics. If you have a parent that has that tastebud that only tastes cilantro as soap then you will probably will too haha.

    maybe plant your own cilantro plant. If you find whole coriander seeds in a seasoning section, you can try planting it. Once you grow some, if you let it mature until the flowers turn into seeds, you can dry them & start the process over.

    I love cilantro! And I’ve heard that it registers as soap for a lot of people. I wonder about that with other foods too. For example I HATE celery. I think it has a very intense offensive flavor but everyone tells me it doesn’t taste like anything. It always baffles me because i think it’s so strong! Haha. Thanks again for another great video! I always look forward to Sunday mornings!

    • @NsTheName
      @NsTheName 2 роки тому +9

      Agreed. I think celery is disgusting. It definitely has a flavor and that flavor is gross. Why would they use it as an umami in recipes if it had no flavor?

    • @ellomgbofu1174
      @ellomgbofu1174 2 роки тому +2

      I feel that way about Brussel Sprouts, Broccoli, and Lima beans. Offensive is the exact word. But I heard it has to do with genetics and certain chemicals in our body that respond that way.

    I love Coriander/Cilantro, especially as garnish for tom yam soups (Thai cuisine), curries (Indian) and salsa Mexicana/Pico de Gallo for quesadillas, sopes, burritos, tacos (Mexican)😋. Although I do understand how some people can't stand its 'earthiness'.
    Also, in Thailand, the root of the coriander is used whereby the roots are washed thoroughly, and pounded with garlic and salt into a paste (using a pestle and mortar) as a base for their curries and soups.

    I think it's called a doggy bag because you might take some steak bones home for your... dog! Usage has broadened to include human leftovers, too. Also, consider starting some coriander from seed on your porch. It's easy to start from seed, and it bolts really fast (like basil), so staggering the plantings will ensure a constant supply of cilantro! Cheers!

    You guys are so wonderful. I’m from PEI, started following you years ago, always makes me excited when you come back home too. Love your content. Cilantro is really easy to grow from seed and it doesn’t last long before it sets seed itself - probably doesn’t sell that much in Korean plant centres and more of a problem/income waste as it’s prime time is so short. The seeds are large and very affordable. I’d mail you some but I don’t think I can do that internationally. Maybe try finding coriander seed in the spice section and planting those! :D

    I do not have the genetic marker for soapy cilantro.
    I also like to add it to certain smoothies fresh or other kitchen sink dishes I scrounge up in a Peruvian green sauce like form. Latter is a great way to use up the rest of the cilantro. I have found the shelf life to be like that of an avocado. Ive heard freezing is a method of extending usability of both.

    Yes, Juvenile Justice…. My family and I have recently started watching this. Its crazy to now know that some of the cases are based on real stories.
    My sister told me that I need to watch ‘Worst Roommate Ever.’ When my husband and I went out on our first date-many years ago. When he was taking me home, there was a cul de sac, two blocks away from my home, that had yellow crime scene tape blocking the street. We later found out, that the guy that lived there, killed his roommate, chopped him up, threw away part of his body parts, then burned the rest of the guy in the fireplace. I will never forget that night! 🤦🏻‍♀️ So, yes….. There are evil people out there.
    Have a great week! Thank you for sharing your week and the Netflix series info with us! Take care.

    Yes the cilantro tastes like soap to me too. I know a few people like that. It’s bizarre.

    Yaay! Sunday wind down ritual! Speaking of cilantro - Barefoot Contessa said too in her cooking show that she doesn't put cilantro in her salsa because as much as she'd want to - her taste buds registers it as soap. Apparently it's genetic. Such people have a variation in a group of olfactory-receptor genes that allows them to strongly perceive the soapy-flavored aldehydes in cilantro leaves.
    Also since we're on food, did you ever get to have your poppyseed muffin/bagel fix in Canada, Sarah?

      Hell yes 😎 I bought every bagel I could with poppyseeds-bread as well.
      That’s so wild about cilantro!!

    If you can't find the plant you can often find the cilantro/coriander for sale in a supermarket. It's usually pretty cheap as well.

    Love coriander! I feel bad for people who hate it lol I feel like they are missing out. And thank you for sharing that scalp treatment I'm going to try it! I live in Toronto and we also have hard water here unfortunately, so I'm also very familiar with calcium build up

    어릴땐 고수맛이 싫었는데 크고 나니 고수가 들어가야하는 음식에 고수가 빠지면 맛이 없더라구요.
    요즘은 고수를 추가해서 넣을만큼 좋아하네요.ㅎㅎㅎ
    영상 잘봤습니다.

      맞아요! 고수가 빠지면 오히려 맛이 없어지거나 뭔가 부족해지는 음식들이 있는거 같아요. 다음번엔 꼭 고수를 첨가해서 타코를 만들어봐야겠어요 😃 은근히 중독되는 맛인거 같아요!

    I have heard about the cilantro soap gene! I'm Canadian and love it but I've heard about it for sure (in Canada, that's the first time I learned that many Koreans are averse)

    Maybe you could ask where the mexican restaurant get their cilantro from next time you go to eat there? They might have to grow for themselves so they could use...and would be willing to sell you a plant.

    My husband and I don't like cilantro at all since it tastes soapy to us. We're not Korean but are of German/English/Irish descent. My kids love it and I'm glad they do, it will make life easier for them!

      Thank you so much :)
      We personally don’t use any marinades when we have Korean BBQ. We just choose our favorite cuts of beef, and our favorite veggies-ssamjjang for dipping sauce, and that’s all there is to it :)
