"He wore a smile even in the worst of times. He was...happy." I think it's incredibly sad how alien it is to Kratos to remember someone who was happy. Kratos lived a life of death, pain and empty vengeance. Most of the people he knew were reflections of that; gods who cared nothing for human suffering, monsters created solely to destroy, fallen heroes and demigods cursed for their mistakes. There was no one in the original GoW trilogy who struck me as decent and/or happy. Kratos wants better for Atreus, he wants his son to make better choices and be what he himself never had the chance to be; happy.

I think naming Kratos' son as Atreus actually carry more of symbolical meaning. Remember he is supposed to be Loki, the one who pushes everything too far to start Ragnarok, where everyone is supposed to die and everything is destroyed.
I think naming him Atreus, Kratos' symbol of hope and happiness may lead to a path not similar to what he suffered in his past and his son becoming not like him but someone better.

Its haunting the way he said "what would Loki do?" though, considering the mythical Loki's hatred for the gods causing this world's apocalypse just like Kratos... yeah I really like how that mirrors Kratos' own past journey. Now I wonder how Kratos would react on that.

What a powerful thing to tell Atreus. That he was named after someone who genuinely gave kratos’ grim and angry self some hope that kratos wasn’t only a weapon, but had SOME humanity left. I hope Atreus sticks with his spartan name rather than loki, only because it makes his relationship with kratos so much stronger.

Something a lot of people tend to forget is that kratos was a man(demigod?) before he ascended into godhood. He was raised among people, lived a life as a human, had friends, family, and those he admired. Before he was the rage fueled beast of the original trilogy he was just another spartan.
It makes me happy and brings a tear to my eye that years later. Even after all his fighting and god hood. He still shows his humanity with scenes like this. He still admires a human for all the acts he committed even if it lead to this man's death.
I hope in the next game Loki sees the sacrifices his father had made to achieve power. His mother, his family, his brother, and all those kratos lost because he went to war with the gods.

A bit off topic from the video itself but its something I've been thinking about. In the beginning Baldur comes to Kratos' home looking for Feye, the last giant but mistakes Kratos for said giant (probably why he said "I thought you'd be bigger) so does that mean none of the Aesir Gods know that Kratos himself is a God from a foreign land? (aside from Mimir and Freya of course) Probably explains why Modi was so shocked that his brother was killed. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

This adds some poignancy and depth as to why Kratos calls him "boy". While it's certainly embedded in his character (Mimir is simply "head"), it's clear to me the birth of Atreus was seen by Kratos as a legitimate sign of hope for distance from his past and growing proximity to a brighter future. But when Faye dies, the anchor for that hope seemingly dies, too, to say nothing of the fact Atreus probably bears a strong resemblance to Faye. It's almost as if calling his son anything but "boy" is too painful a reminder of what he's long hoped for and is now actively losing.
Ultimately, revealing Atreus' godhood and watching him struggle with and overcome the same rage-fueled egocentric proclivities probably rekindled Kratos' hopes in redeeming himself and realizing his son will be everything he couldn't.

I really like that Kratos names Atreus in honor of a fallen comrade who’s demeanor and attitude made him different among his fellow Spartans, but he was still a warrior to his dying breath.

What were the measurements for? They were of course arguing about Fimbulwinter, but I'm guessing they're making him a body?

i thought this moment was particularly beautiful. Atreus spent all of his life thinking kratos hated him and never wanted him, when the truth is he truly did love him, even named him after his beloved comrad. Turns out he never hated Atreus, his true motive for his behavior towards him was fear. He was hoping Atreus would never become like him, that he would be something far better than he could of ever hoped to accomplish. He knew he was a monster, and he knew how terrible he was, so in his final hope for a better world, he entrusted his heart to Atreus.

Atreus represents his hope, his desire to leave behind his old self and to be a better person. I think he certainly on the right track. Whether or not things will work out as he hopes I cannot say, but I hope that they do.
