  • This week Sydney and Ally show you what life is like as English teachers living in rural South Korea! We all met through the EPIK program and are in our 2nd year of teaching. If you want to see the differences between rural and Seoul, make sure to stay tuned for Henry’s vlog next week! As always, if you have any questions for us, be sure to drop them in the comments below!

    It’s interesting to see teachers in the rural areas. Most of the teachers that I knew ended up taking a train into the city on the weekends

    Great video. Just found your channel, it’s getting me excited to start applying to rural teaching jobs in South Korea ✨

    the pokemon game thing is really cool! I am in the process of getting the TEFL certificate but I think it's really cool to involve games into classes since it's more fun 👍

    Ally-for a car name suggestion, how about “Let’s Go,” (in Korean)😆 Kaja!? 🤦🏽‍♀️😂 Sorry, that idea sounded so much better in my head.
    I love seeing snippets and commentary of your lives; please continue to post these day-in-the-life type vlogs. You both seem to have built a comfortable routine for your lives in Korea.
    I especially love how Enha references keep popping up throughout your video.🫶🏼 Jake🫣. Can’t wait for 🍊Blood!
    Side note: Had to stop myself from taking pics of small Baby Shark toys in Walmart the other day….first, the boys are going to be beluga whales in the Baby Shark movie, not sharks…and second, I am not doing a vlog so who am I going to send it to irl who will not think I am a nut. (Ba-by Shark do do do do-do….is now in my head). Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!💕

    Looks pretty lowkey and chill! I assume it would be more stressful if it was less rural

    • @seoul_mates
      @seoul_mates  2 місяці тому +2

      it really depends on what you define as stressful! the area is definitely less busy and the scenery is beautiful but you’ll likely end up planning more classes per week. But I think it’d be less stressful to people who have taught before!

    What is the pokemon game that is played at 10:18? I accepted a teaching job in Korea and I am very nervous despite having a degree in education lol. I still feel as if I am not prepared despite studying ESL education for three years.

      congratulations on your new job!! pretty much all of our games come from taysteachingtoolkit or korshare :) eslintherok has some good low tech games too! it can be scary at first but it sounds like you’ll be well prepared! we didn’t have any teaching experience before coming here and now it’s like 2nd nature so I’m sure you’ll do great!

    Hello what do you think about Gyeonggie do? Is it rural?

    • @seoul_mates
      @seoul_mates  2 місяці тому

      it’s hard to say because Gyeonggi-do is so large. all placements there will be considered rural by EPIK, but you could be placed in the country side or in a mini city!

    your school doesn't mind the colored hair? I really want to dye mine but I figured they would be against it

    • @seoul_mates
      @seoul_mates  10 місяців тому +3

      every school is different but Ally and I have both dyed our hair bright colors while being here and our schools were totally fine with it! Ally even applied with colorful hair but panicked and dyed it black before she came and then regretted it 😅

    Love your guys’ content!! Fwhere did you get your TEFLA done at? Also I Just graduated with my BA and was wondering how you found jobs or get into contact with agencies if I don’t speak Korean well yet? Thanks so much xxxx

      Hey! Thanks for watching! I (Ally) did my TEFL at TEFL.org online, super user friendly! I applied to the recruitment agency Korvia and interviewed with them, they set me up with all the tools I needed before setting up my actual EPIK interview. But we've had friends use lots of different channels, including applying to EPIK directly. All the agencies I'm aware of speak English so you should be good! Let us know if you apply ^^

    Do you have any recommendations for placement city requests? rural looks beautiful. However, I don't really want to drive and am okay walking 5-15 minutes from location to location and taking public transport

    • @seoul_mates
      @seoul_mates  8 місяців тому +1

      for EPIK you unfortunately can’t request a specific city, just the province which is much larger! I’m 99.9% certain you’d never be required to drive tho, korea has a lot of public buses even in rural areas!

      @@seoul_matesThank you I have a PhD and am thinking of taking a break from American life for a few years as this country's become so unaffordable.

    do you have to do report cards?

    • @seoul_mates
      @seoul_mates  10 місяців тому

      nope, the home room teachers take care of that! I believe ally has to write up some comments for students at one of her school and give them to her co teacher, but it’s not quite as official as handing out report cards or grades to the parents
