The GPU is not upgradable. It's soldered in, nothing you can do. And no, you can't put in the "K" CPU, it won't boot with it. Only the 3770S works; that's Apple for you.
@@MacintoshMen I cannot confirm this. I just upgraded my 2012 21.5 iMac from an 3330s to a 3770 (non-K). The 3330s is a 65W CPU, whereas the 3770 is a 77W CPU. If upgrading the memory is doable, why does the Apple website say it is not upgradable? Is it as basic as Apple doesnt want us to upgrade ourselves and purchase a newer model or is there a specific problem or difficulty?
These models are not considered “USER” upgradable, as it requires cutting seals and adhesives, and major disassembly… most computer USERS are not comfortable cutting and disassembling their $$$ iMac$ to such a degree 😎… it’s more a ‘nerd’ thing 🥸 27” iMacs have a ‘hatch’ just above the power connector, allowing fairly easy access to the !FOUR! You'll need the 3770s, because Apple never offered the "k". People had some luck with other CPUs in Macs but in most cases, i'd even say 95%, it won't work.

Honestly, the backwards CPU thing annoys me. I'd argue it was maybe to keep the heat from the CPU and GPU off the back of the LCD panel. But the 2010 imac had the cpu and GPU facing the right way and they flipped the boards in the 2011 revison so its probably Apple just being dicks.

@@jaycool5978 it is not my opinion; rather, it is known fact.
@@jaycool5978 pressing the cutter against the edges of the screen, at least along the horizontal edges, frequently kills an adjacent vertical strip of LCD of varying widths depending on the severity of the injury. the result is a vertical blacked out strip running from top to bottom but with the LED lighting still seen to be illuminating, from the top and bottom edges, the now dead strip/s of LCD screen information.
Thank you for sharing it. I have this exact iMac. Hope I can do the same although this is my main and only machine. One question, since the i7 supports up to 32GB of Ram, would it be possible to put in this much ram?
Hi, you could try but I can't guarantee that it works 100%.
I hope this worked!?
Such a unique content man thanks
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks!
how easy is it to upgrade the GPU? or does it have to be an egpu? would the Core i7-3770-K work well? and what's the most amount of ram it supports?
The GPU is not upgradable. It's soldered in, nothing you can do. And no, you can't put in the "K" CPU, it won't boot with it. Only the 3770S works; that's Apple for you.
@@MacintoshMen Apple... :/
Would it work if i try to boot to windows?
@@predsfan2721 No, it just won't power on.
@@MacintoshMen how about i7-3770 rather than i7-3770s?
@@MacintoshMen I cannot confirm this. I just upgraded my 2012 21.5 iMac from an 3330s to a 3770 (non-K). The 3330s is a 65W CPU, whereas the 3770 is a 77W CPU. From the first tests, it works flawlessly. However, the difference is only 12W, so the system should be able to cope with the little extra heat. A little disappointment is that my model does not have a PCIE port, so I have to put up with a SATA SSD.
I'm thinking of buying a mac late 2012 but I'm scared that it won't be supported in a few years, do you know anything about this?
I'm afraid the official support already stopped at Catalina :( But you can hack it to run Big Sur and it's not too hard.
@@MacintoshMen …Official support ended for macOS upgrades, but (as of March 2022) Catalina is still receiving almost all the Security updates.
Which processor was used?
Where did you buy the pieces ? Any advice of website?
Ebay is a good place to get the stuff. I can strongly recommend the iFixit adhesive kit though, it worked really good.
If upgrading the memory is doable, why does the Apple website say it is not upgradable? Is it as basic as Apple doesnt want us to upgrade ourselves and purchase a newer model or is there a specific problem or difficulty?
2021 imacs with apples sylicon chip are not upgradable , All prev imacs from 2009 on are upgradable .
These models are not considered “USER” upgradable, as it requires cutting seals and adhesives, and major disassembly… most computer USERS are not comfortable cutting and disassembling their $$$ iMac$ to such a degree 😎… it’s more a ‘nerd’ thing 🥸
27” iMacs have a ‘hatch’ just above the power connector, allowing fairly easy access to the !FOUR! Mem slots.
I say ‘fairly easy’, because the stand is in the way 🤪.. it’s an ‘Apple’ thing, doncha-know….
Well done!
Thanks!
cant you use the trapdoor thing at the back to change the RAM? or is it not available on this model
No, I'm afraid the door is only on 27'" models :(
@@MacintoshMen I see, thank you
Great video!
Does i7 3770K work for iMac 21.5-inch late 2012 (core i5 3330s 2.7 ghz)?
Because someone told me K version is not supported and as a result I need i7 3770s for upgrade?
Is it true?
Thank you.
You'll need the 3770s, because Apple never offered the "k". People had some luck with other CPUs in Macs but in most cases, i'd even say 95%, it won't work.
does it use DDR3L or DDR3 ?
DDR3L
please do not push the cutter into the crack too deeply because it can permanently damage some parts of the image on the lcd display.
there is a slot for a smaller ssd on the motherboard. why did you not use this?
This type of SSD is much more expensive and also it being a Mac you never know if it will be compatible. You might need a OEM one or an adapter. So I went with the normal SATA SSD, it's cheaper and I don't have to worry.
@@MacintoshMen true

I bought the CPU on Aliexpress, the rest on Amazon and eBay. You'll find everything with a little bit of research easily.

Would a regular Intel I7 3770 work or do I have to use the 3770s?
No it has to be the 3770s. With other types of CPUs the computer just doesn't boot because of.. well Apple.

It was for surely never opened before until we did.
apple geniuses decided in 2011 to make the imac as a totally sealed unit with no user-friendly opening hatch.
@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 I fully agree with you
is there Ryzen equivalent that i can use on my 2012 imac to the intel i7 cpu you installed?

Sounds like a RAM problem to me. It is either not seated correctly, broken or (most likely) incompatible.
hi i have 2010 imac 21.5 inch and i wanna install BIG SUR what i have to upgrade?
There is no good working hack out there for Big sur (yet). You'll have to upgrade it to a Metal capable GPU if you want to run Mojave and later.
Try the big sur patch from Ben (google it)...I just made an upgrade 2 days ago it worked. Just use the kex patch after install to have the wifi work. I have it on my late 2012, 21.5” iMac 😊

Either clone it from the old HDD, install from Internet Recovery (the way I would do it) or bootable Mac OS USB

So not all iMacs of this exact spec have the NVMe slot? I'm actually just going a dive down the rabbit hole trying to find this out now. I have one of these exact iMacs and a spare Samsung 970 NVMe M.2 laying around.
cool subbed
i9 possible?
Honestly, the backwards CPU thing annoys me. I'd argue it was maybe to keep the heat from the CPU and GPU off the back of the LCD panel. But the 2010 imac had the cpu and GPU facing the right way and they flipped the boards in the 2011 revison so its probably Apple just being dicks.
Apple being dicks is the reason I guess; unfortunately in the 2010 iMacs the CPU is also on the other side.
@@MacintoshMen Is it? Maybe I'm confusing the GPU. I know on the 2010 One of the chips is front facing. Its the reason I killed my 2011 imac trying to replace the already dead radion GPU. In the end I bought a mac pro from 2008 and maxed it out. Much better machine to work on :)
@@MacintoshMen It really wouldn't surprise me if they just didnt care that no one could upgrade their Imac- 2010/11 was really the death of user servicable macs apart from the pro
And don't get me started on upgrading ARM macs even if they are looking good performance wise
@@willm5032 Yeah, I think you meant the GPU, on the 2010s you can take it out without removing the entire motherboard. And upgrading ARM Macs? Haha, would be cool. I fear that all the Macs wil lin future just become sort of iPads/iPhones. Once too slow, you have to replace it. Hopefully they don't butcher the Mac Pro again when it switches to ARM.
@@MacintoshMen Yeah most likely! I was hoping the 2011 would be the same but nooooOooOo. Haha it really would- they cite the Chip architecture as the reason but I bet they're happy people can't upgrade. That said, if people do have to upgrade, the used market will be great- or apple will die on its ass because people migrate to upgradable machines... They won't touch the pro- its used too much in the TV and film indistries and music industry. Thats like their only market for the pro and they'd 100% dump apple if they ruined the modular design!
Love ur channel by the way!
i don't think apple should have gone to this thin-profile design.
Can i use cpu i7 3770? Our not working?
I wouldn't risk it. Macs are known to be very picky when it comes to CPU upgrades. There is a big chance of it not working.
if those are danish accents then they are extremely subtle. i don't think it is danish because of the over-subtlety.
I would have been nice if we could have seen the screen been detached.
What do you mean, unplugging the cables and such? Yeah, we probably could have set up the camera in a different angle but at the time both of us were only figuring how to remove the display for the first time. Unfortunately, we focused more on this than on the camera. Sorry about that.
