- Fist of Fun
Richard is still bugging last week’s audience about Lego Batman - it’s amazing they keep coming back. His guest is Gillian Pieface, or as she is sometimes known Julian Clary.
They chat about how the Universe lets you know it’s time for a break, psychic teeth, burning pianos, perverted monks, the inability to escape innuendo, living next door to hyenas, having a head full of skin, the Tracey family and Aquamarina, Piers Morgan, cocaines, Brian Blessed, Jimmy Greaves, Mike Smith, acting, panto, the continent of the incontinent and disappointing ways to celebrate big birthdays.

I was about to leave a comment about how much I love Julian but looks like the comment section is already jam packed, just how we like it. What a gem of a human being
I've always liked Julian. Quick witted and a gent. I love how mature he is and doesn't seem to hold grudges again people from times in the past.
Whyte Buff 👏🏻 spot on mate
Brings back fond memories of entertaining TV.
I love Julian Clary, he's brilliantly sharp and clever. Very underrated IMO. Nice one, RH!
That was brilliant. Richard and Julian have a great camaraderie. I hope Julian comes again ;)
julians incredibly fast and funny, very good guest
He is effortless funny always, shame we don't get to see more of him.
One of the best ever RHLSTP ever. Clary is one of those rare comedians that is effortlessly funny without even needing to try.
Better than one of those tautological comedians who say everything twice.
@@Sam-zj6mw You really did him there by getting one over on him. It made me laugh and involuntarily manufacture noises resembling laughter.
"I self published" "Of course you did" oh god I laughed so hard. I'm sorry. I think you're fab Richard but oh that man is quick!
"Let's have another emergency question"
"That's a good ruse, it is a plug for your book..."
The delivery!! The timing!! The casual indifference!! Eleven minutes in and this is excellent!! RHLSTP! (RHLSTP!!)
“You’re never to old for a hoodie” fantastic
Julian must be the only celeb who the playground rumour mill at my school said was not actually gay, and just acted that way for TV. Glad he cleared that one up. Always love seeing him pop up in my feed. Fabulous comedian.
Always really liked julian. Definitely underrated. Super sharp witted and doesn't suffer fools. Seems like a genuinely nice guy, not arrogant or pretentious.
Julian Clary is pure class.
Julian is such a fabulous guest. Loved this.
I always like Julian Clary, gentle and biting, with poise and sophistication.
Had a smile on my face for the whole show.
4:11 that car wash joke was hilarious!
Absolutely adore this man.
What a lovely man he comes across as. I could have listened to him for hours. Great show, thanks.
Too short by a long shot. Loved it.
This is brilliant in every single way, next to the Paul Merton one this is one of my favourites! Anyone else seeing him in Le Grand Mort? Should be interesting to say the least!
The Norman Lamont joke was just so hilarious. He was presenting an award at a comedy show and for some reason, the stage set was all plants and rocks and Julian opened with an observation that the set looked like Hampstead Heath.. which was hilarious enough on its own, because it WAS just what it looked like!
He didn't deserve what happened to his career after that.. but there it was.. the right wing homophobic press of the time had been after him for some time. He's recovered well in subsequent years I'm glad to say, as I have always found him a very funny and natural entertainer.
That was an absolute treat. Thank you. Need to read his autobiography now.
What a fab RHLSTP this was the one I had been waiting for all summer wish it had been slightly longer as I am huge Clary fan
Brian Blessed would be a FANTASTIC guest!!!
You didn't give Julian a warm hand on his entrance!
I’ve adored Julian since the sticky moments days. Wonderful.
Takes me back to the 90s...Julian was always on the telly. He's funny and a great guest.
Dear Richard,
Please can you ask Tim from The Office to appear on the podcast sometime? Preferably in character as Martin Freeman.
You rock,
Mike
Ps. Do you know Superman?
It would be great it it was all done as Tim from the office :) Stephen Merchant may advise Tim against it though.
I always think of Julian as a one man Carry On film but with no script or boundaries.
That was brilliant :') Richard's little face was the icing on the cake, he was so happy 😂
It's so lovely to watch. He looks like he's got a little crush. :)
This video never gets old x
Julian's reaction at 19:18 is brilliant!
Totally unexpected how quick and amazing Julian is. Never thought i liked him until now.
Really good episode, Julian is so naturally funny
Noticed a few edits in this one, audience members get in here and tell us what happened!
"You're never too old for a hoodie, are you?"
*Is it me or is it about the first time I've seen Richard Herring intimidated by a guest ???.... Because you can really feel Richard is NOT exactly the persona he usually puts on in his interviews...*
David Bowie's looking surprisingly well.
lol
Perfect delivery , so funny
I've got a twenty-a-week Tunnock's Caramel Wafer habit. I was eating one when they were mentioned in the video, and as such, I felt an iota of control over the universe.
"What kind of fun did you have?" 9:23
I was very lucky to see Julian in London UK. He was hilarious
Great episode.. Keep up the good work !
Richard, can you bring Julian back on? Thank you!
Agree, but Julian is from the old school and hasn't adapted as much to trends as someone like Herring does. I feel he prefers light chat that doesn't get too personal or involve divulging opinions about things. Then during the light chat he can slip in some innuendo or catty comment. Podcasts have made long form and detailed interviews a lot more common and celebs who have been on the circuit for 20 years are a bit out of water.
Julian's ideal interview would be a breakfast show where he can slip-in innuendos. Also, his career was de-railed due to a hate campaign and I'm sure he's extremely wary of divulging a lot of personal matters or private opinions. It's a shame he is a somewhat big celebrity because otherwise it would be good having him sat in the background for every show, just demeening or attacking Herring every so often.
I actually don't know why so many people say Herring is bad at interviewing. These are conversations and Herring's 'awkwardness' should be able to be handled by people with moderate social skills. A lot of the guests just seem to start think the show has gone off the rails if the focus isn't on them or they feel they need to be constantly funny. The audience really doesn't help in this regard and makes guests feel they have to be 'on' and leads to a lot of the awkwardness. But without the paying audience we probably wouldn't be able to have this show due to financing and not many people would want to be left alone in a room with Herring - joke. I wonder if this is the longest comment for this channel. If it is can I have a cup of chai tea with Richard besides for duck pond?
Love Julian! Can we have Alan Davies as well, please? Reckon he'd be a scream.
Was something cut out at the 42:43 mark?
There seems to be another edit at 25:30
There is definitely 2 minutes missing.
It's in the audio version. It's just Richard talking about his Cat. Not sure what was in the earlier edit though.
Yeah, I think there's plenty of cuts, but I don't think it takes anything away particularly.
9:22 😆 made me laugh out loud!
'The afore mentioned Paul O'Grady'? Something _actually_ cut in the edit?! Or did I zone out briefly?
Very funny interview. Thanks :)
I assume something around the 42:42 mark that warranted the emergency question
There sure was! It's a shame it's gone, but only a mad man would have left it in!
Tantalus!
Andy McH oh go on - give us a clue!
Did Clary and O'Grady see a Bigfoot, AndyMcH? Is that what you're hiding from us?
Excellent one this. x
Love at first sight when I met Julian Clary through Taskmaster.
I like how Julian will set down some firm boundaries - albeit delivered a little bit too harshly - but then go along with the question or joke still. You could tell he had inadvertently made Herring feel bad about the puppet sex question and so made sure to give a proper answer for it. He's catty, but he isn't a bully. I like that. It must be difficult to publicly banter with people you don't know well and keep within each others only partially known boundaries. Signing off now.
Has anyone got a link for the video of Mike Smith with Jimmy Greaves on TV AM (I think)?
It's about 3 minutes in. Mike Smith deals with him very well: ua-cam.com/video/5dVZIrjhrpA/v-deo.html
Thanks D, I was looking for that
i would LOVE to see dame Edna interviewing Julian
Great episode. Cheers.
Love julian he's so so funny.brilliant live too.as is richard.
Bit shorter than normal Rich How much is missing & for what reason..... very good though
What sort of fun did you have?
Cocaine!
What a delivery. 😂😂😂
Too short indeed, needs to be on again
You can't fool me I know that's Fred Schneider from the B-52's!
10:58 "Probably weirder things happened later." 😂
Stewart Lee, Steve Coogan n now this. I've started with the best three I suspect. 😁
LOVE JULIAN!
‘What kind of fun did you have here’?
‘Cocaine’ 😂😂😂😂
unusual amounts of edits.
f*cking brilliant.
I was regularly slippered by my own gym shoe, called out almost every PE lesson in the late 70s (aged about 7) for the 9 months I went to one private school. Lost track of countless times Mr Elms whacked me on the coccyx, the nasty shit. They also liked to rap your knuckles with a ruler edge if you couldn't spell a word. Still what doesn't break you...ugh ;(
We knew Julian’s old school as St Bendydicks.
It amuses me when Richard’s guests start to interview him instead😂
Yes this works. Must be difficult to interview as he has such a stillness about him which if the interviewer matched him it would be a three hour interview.
What's the bit about Paul O'Grady that's missing?
a meal?
Very entertaining.
That 'I was only joking' lunge from Herring was embarrassing. He suddenly became Des O'Connor.
I'd be so gay for Clary. Norman Lamont wouldn't get a look-in.
Clary is the original and genuine thing. Which is why I can't stand Alan Carr.
If Julian was straight... he has that wit and charm and looks to play James Bond!
James Bummed
@nobodyanderson4353 lol
fucking hell Julian - absolutely *killing* right out of the gate
Richard Herring's Advice on Comedy to Julian Clary Show
Or as the cool kids call it..
RHACJCS
Brilliant. I felt like he was a bit wary of you and perhaps not used to that awkwardness with people he doesn't know. It created a very funny one. On thoughts for other guests, Alan Carr? I hear he is openly homosexual too oo er.
shame you can't like more than once.
askance - that's a word I haven't heard in years
Get Ben Elton.
We'd be so lucky!
No thanks
As a kid I found Julian Clary really scary and creepy!
Dom fucking Joly. I will rob a bank and pay for the entirety of the next season's podcasts if you actually do Mr. Joly. Mostly to see the incredible contortions your face makes.
Best ad lib since Groucho Marx.
T-shirt two sizes too small..........
The only male i would concidering sleep with...
Carwash
Richard when the fuck did you get good at interviewing people?
don't get me wrong, I love the awkward pauses and strange questions, but wow
Fist!
Don't like him. Spiky and mean spirited.
