Started watching your videos recently and really find them interesting. This is worth watching as it goes back to your start, more or less. Glad I’m catching up.
So how long is the average shift for your boat? I’ve heard of people working 18 hours a day on these. Also how did you enter into this field? You really went all in if you went to Dutch harbor.. Any advice on how to get into this? It looks like the pay varies a lot but it’s all pretty good.
how does one start work as a commercial fisherman and what would be the requirements,i have been wanting to do something related to fishing my whole life be it on a netting boat or a rod and reel commercial fishing boat and i cant find a way to get to it
I would love the job but i never know the type of ppl on the boat and 9 out of 10 times the people are the worst type if you are new on the ship (in germany atleast)
The nine hundred and first like! Thanks for the vid. I had a chance to get up to Alaska to fish nearly 30 years ago when I was a young man like yourself. I've missed many opportunities over the years but Not finding a way to get up there then, is one of my biggest regrets. Be safe, lad.
I think this is really interesting. So how does it work? Do you stay at sea until you catch what you guys deem a good haul or do you guys stay on land and just go fishing everyday? Also do you stick to one kind of fish or everything goes? This vlog was great, by the way. Hope to see more like it.
A trip lasts for usually 3 or 4 days, until the boat is full. A boat like this one mostly fishes for Alaskan Pollock, although occasionally they'll do Pacific Cod if there's quota left at the end of Cod season.
I’ve only worked the production part in Alaska like at silver bay and Peter Pan seafoods definitely recommend going to silver bay in Sitka …. Really interested in trying a boat
I love what you are doing, i am also sailing here in the faroe island with a Trowler. I have one Question are you guys not guting the fish? Or is the fish only in large seawather tanks
@@jakobolavjensen looking forward to it. I found your channel as I was combing through videos about fisherman trying to balance on their boats (it’s all over TikTok and X). I like your car content. I’m a big turbo and junkie, too, although mostly on the diesel side.
Hey man I’ve been looking to get into this kind of work do you mind telling me what you did to get in I hear there’s a lot of different ways to get a spot but I’m wondering what’s the best way to get a spot
Jakob!!!! Nice work buddy. Great video, I subscribed and definitely want to watch more. Be careful out there. Fun seeing your mom and sis commenting on your accomplishments. Gonna get Maddox working shipyard this summer, give him a little taste of what the needle gun’s all about 😜
Considering doing this myself but I just have one question:as a gymrat myself how are you able to keep your muscle mass while away on the ship for long periods of time? Or do you dock and go into town at the end of every day?
Bro one of the hardest parts about this job for me is that I’m not able to keep my muscle mass and I’m constantly going backwards.. We don’t come back every day, our trips range a lot but I’m able to lift like 3 days a week.
I’ve been trying to get a job the last 2 days and can give some limited insight. Some will take people with no experience but you’ll most likely be a processor at first(some trawlers in the Bering sea have processing plants on board) and then graduate up to being a deck hand. Some might be down to train you to be a deckhand off the bat but I couldn’t find anything like that. I am applying late for the season which might be why I can’t find anyone hiring anymore deckhand trainees. Processing jobs out at sea still pay very well, I imagine if you bust your ass(and have a good boss) they might recognize it and think you’re worth putting time into to train you for a higher skilled position. I couldn’t find much fishing for the Atlantic this time of year, I think there’s some treaty to help the fish or some shit, I didn’t fully understand what the article was saying but I know there’s nothing on the east coast of the USA right now. Not sure if other countries do their own thing so you might find something in the Netherlands. Hope you find what you’re looking for and stay safe
Love the channel! Ima be working on board soon my dad been in the game for 35 years he makes a lot on the smaller boats a 4 man crew and because he knows how to sew up the nets fast
this boat looks easier than mine im on a 63ft boat and we have to pick and seperate the whole pile than box and ice and then stack them and repeat, never seen that before!
Don’t know if you’re still on this channel or not. How would I go about finding a job like this? I work general labor, worked on a few slaughter houses as well and I love the ocean. I live far from it but every excuse I get I take a visit to the beach by myself. I like to go at night and just look out far into the sea. I’d really love a job like this, I’d have a hard time leaving. I’m 21.
Got my job offer from North Star fishing company. Any advice for a first timer? Never fished on a boat nor lived on a boat for extended periods of time. Thanks in advance
Hi Jake, my grandparents who just got back from Alaska have a friend who does commercial fishing with his family. I want to go forth in going on a boat with them fishing next summer. I'll be 18 then and thisll be my first time ever doing it. Do I need experience with this or can I actually be of help as a newbie.
Nice! It’s a good opportunity so if you get the chance you should take it. You don’t need experience, everyone starts without knowing anything at some point. Just have to be willing to learn and you’ll do fine 👍🏼
Hi I do pelagic fishing in South Africa very hard work the net must be pulled and packed by hand it's a dangerous work, lots of cables ropes and stuff I'm a second engineer and a safety officer but I started as a regular deckhand I can splice cable rope and mutch more I would like to work on a boat like that do you have contact details of that company that you work for please.
When I see all those fish in the net I imagine them yelling “swim down, swim down” from Finding Nemo.😂 Great work young man, we’re all proud of you! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼🎣

how cool seeing the behind the scenes of commercial fishing! I have a friend who works in it as well so this was so interesting to me
Thats one slick operation! Nice big bags, no processing, small crew… love it! 🇨🇦😎🇨🇦

Honestly thats a sick job you got there dude! Keep up the grind!
i love this guy even more now
most ppl our age whould hide this type of job

Why would you hide it?
Most people are kind of impressed especially when you tell them you fight sharks brave cyclones and live on the ocean for weeks at a time.
Or they wouldn't wanna do this type of Job at all
You can make hella money commercial fishing

Nice video cunado
I was never ready! Shout out to you Jake for being out there and doing the most! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I want to move to alaska one day. The wilderness. The frontier. What a life
How hard was it? for how long? do they give housing?
So interesting to see the behind the scenes of how all that is done. Looks so creepy and eary being out in the dark ocean with nothing else around!
Yeah definitely, the ocean make a decent sized boat feel very small 😂

Dutch Harbor , yay !!! I will be there tomorrow.
Did you need to buy all your gear? Or what did you end up having to personally go out and get for this job ahead of time?
Just bought my rain gear when I got to the island!
So how exactly do you store the fish once it’s on board
Big holding tanks under the deck, then circulate cold water to keep them fresh
Pretty clean shot by the looks and straight into the brine? How good
