For those quoting law: On dual citizenship, International law allows the authorities of the country you're visiting (if its one of the ones you hold citizenship of) to treat you while you are there as if that is your only nationality. For example, if you hold a british citizenship, the British representative in Nigeria cannot give you assistance or protection against Nigerian authorities whilst in Nigeria.

We all know the truth, 9 out of 10 times it is no easy to get a Nigerian Passport, I think this process should be easy like other West African Countries, also immigration offices in the Americas should desist from collecting money that is not on their website. I know in the US they collect $30, and they ask for bogus photocopies, I believe that have all these info in their system. I think they just love racketeering.

Adding to what you said, British representatives in Nigeria will treat as a British citizen and help dual citizens who travel into Nigeria as Brits, on their UK passport, with a valid visa to visit Nigeria. If they enter as Nigerians on their Nigerian passport, they are subject to the Nigerian government as Nigerians. That is the law in full.
This is why I plan to only travel to Nigeria in future with a visitor's visa on my British passport despite holding dual Nigerian and British citizenships.

Many countries allow their citizens to return home on expired passports to prevent them from being stranded abroad. However, expired passports are not valid for future international travel. If you are a dual national and wish to use your other passport to exit the country, you should have a valid entry visa in it in order to exit legally with it later.

What Summer does not understand is that her entering into Nigeria on an expired passport is a one way thing; it is not a perpetual visa. Summer was claiming she’s a foreigner, fine! Where is your visa? Because a visa allows you IN and OUT of a country. She can’t then bring out an expired passport as that is only recognised coming in. Afterall, an expired passport will not be accepted anywhere as an official document. In other words, she is a foreigner without a visa. The immigration officer could have let her leave via the deportation route which is a much more unpleasant route out of the country. He could have also stamped her Irish passport marking her as an illegal immigrant and ruined it for her.
(she’s Irish I think, not British?)
    She got off lightly.

Why can't we all be honest with ourselves? While Nigerian institutions may not be flawless, it's improbable that Summers' passport has only been expired for 5 years, possibly even longer. Renewing a Nigerian passport typically doesn't take 5 years anywhere in the world. Previously, Nigerians with expired passports resorted to emergency travel certificates or visas on foreign passports. However, the government has streamlined the process. Instead of dwelling on the negatives, let's honestly assess the context of this situation

I renewed my Nigerian Passport within two weeks in Lagos without any difficulties. On my day of departure, I presented my Renewed Passport and British Passport, but NIS Officer asked for the passport I used to enter the Country and I provided this. No issues. This matter is pretty straightforward. The Nigerian Government has given Nigerians with expired passports the privilege to travel into the Nigeria on an expired passport, so please let’s not abuse this.

Some of us don’t have 2 weeks to spend in Nigeria. It’s very simple, if the Nigerian government doesn’t want its citizens flying in and out of the country on expired passports, then do not allow them to enter the country on expired passports. Most Nigerians flying into the country on an expired passport unfortunately do not have the time to get through the ridiculous process of renewing a passport in Nigeria. It takes soo much energy and time which most do not have.
In response to Funke, a Nigerian citizen leaving Nigeria does not have to actually have a valid Nigerian passport when exiting Nigeria as long as you hold a valid passport that is acceptable to both the carrier airline and country of destination. I’ve never had to show my U.S. passport in order to exit the United States. I only have to show a valid U.S. passport when boarding to and entering the United States. If Nigerian immigration needs to ascertain a persons Nigerian citizenship at the port of exit, a valid Nigerian birth certificate or any valid ID that shows Nigerian citizenship should suffice.

  • @tobimcmorris7690
    @tobimcmorris7690 Місяць тому +8

This issue is simple! If you arrive Nigeria with a Nigerian passport, then you can depart the country with a VALID Nigerian passport.
And if you arrive with a Nigerian passport, but want to leave with a foreign passport then you MUST have a VALID VISA on the foreign passport which shows you can leave.
The case in discussion is about entering Nigeria with a Naija PPT then insisting on leaving with a foreign PPT which has neither a VISA nor an ENTRY (arrival!) date. IT DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!
You either come in as a FOREIGNER and leave as a FOREIGNER or you come in as a NIGERIAN and leave as a NIGERIAN. The the essence of having a Nigerian ppt for dual citizens, is to make it easier for Nigerians. Else you apply for visa like all foreigners. And you're only given a 30 day visa, after which you'll have to apply to extend it in Nigeria at an enormous cost.

There are either no available passport books after staying hours in that heat without air-condition. If we drop all sentiments aside, leaving Nigeria as a holder of a 2nd passport is not dependent on the validity of your Nigerian passport. An expired Nigerian passport is still proof of citizenship and for as long as the departure destination does not require the said passport as proof of travel, the NIS cannot demand validity of same as a condition for travel. My husband only presents his foreign passport on departure and nobody has ever asked about the validity of his Nigerian passport. If you have a resident permit of another country then you must have a valid passport to travel irrespective. The NIS granted a waiver for travel to Nigeria with an expired passport bc of the difficulty of processing Nigerian passports both at home and abroad. Some of the resultant loopholes are a result of policies not thought through. Besides depending on the route of travel, some airlines and countries will not offer transit services with expired passports. It will only be possible on direct flights to Nigeria. There are so many dimensions to this story. Lets not even go into the discrimination women and ordinary citizens face in Nigeria. Thats a whole phd thesis. But thanks Funke for the highlight.

This is a quote of this PUNCH about the current topic “Consequent upon the above, all entry/exit points are by the copy of this letter directed to open a help desk for all Nigerians in this category and directed the same to passport offices where their passports will be reissued within a maximum of two weeks.” It is indicated there that 'HELP DESK should be opened to resolve issuing new passports within 2 weeks. I am assuming that such Help desk facility is not available yet. My question to you is this, are you able to use your platform to advocate the help that Nigerians required to the appropriate government department? In addition, in clarifying the ambiguity in the understanding of the use of old Naija passport (if a Nigerian entered Naija with an expired Naija passport, MUST it be renewed before exiting Nigeria irrespective of what country's passport will be used when exiting), are you able to invite an immigration lawyer or any official from Nigerian immigration for this clarification? For dual citizens, such as those with Nigerian and UK citizenship, it's crucial to understand that when you enter Nigeria on your Nigerian passport, you are recognized as a Nigerian citizen before being acknowledged as a British citizen. Even the British authorities will not intervene in your affairs against Nigerian authorities, nor provide any assistance or protection. It's a misconception to assume that you'll receive equal benefits from both authorities while in Nigeria simply because you hold both passports.
In this scenario, Britain will acknowledge you as a Nigerian citizen when you're on Nigerian soil. (THIS IS INTERNATIONAL LAW). I hope this clarifies the situation.

I believe she has a right as a british citizen to leave the country without hassle even though she didn't renew her Nigeria passport. To be realistic she is showing the benefits of being a dual citizen. Nigeria immigration should understand the dual nationality application process for entry and existing the country.

    • @SassyFunke
      @SassyFunke  Місяць тому +1

The Nigerian immigration service is very right in this regard. The rule of thumb in every country states that you must exit with their own passport if you are a citizen, else you must have visa on your foreign passport that shows inbound arrival b4 you can exit.
I’m also a dual citizen myself and I know this rule perfectly.
If you arrive with passport A and exit with passport B you may evade security tracking system.

@Sassy Funke, as long as the Nigerian governement acknowledges dual citizenship, the on the spot "by-law" by the immigration officer at the airport does not hold water. What u r referencing to has nothing to do with her situation, she has another valid passport with which she can exit the country with. The Nigerian government only gave Nigerians an oppurtunity (due to their failures) albeit not assured on renewing their expired passports once they get into the coutry. Remember, the time frame given is 2weeks so, if her stay was for just 4days and she needs to rush back to work....what happens? The immigration officer was just doing the what they know how to do best i.e. create unecessary bottle-necks for financial rewards....he would have gone ahead to detain her if he thought he was right and c d diplomatic issues that would have cause because of N500.

@SassyFunke your vlog until today was usually more exciting when you came across as impartial and objective, especially with a flare of panache but this video right here is cringing, it bears all the hallmarks of desperation. Are you really now PR for the Nigerian government or Immigration service or is there something you’re hoping to gain from the system?
Please just for the purposes of integrity and perhaps spread more knowledge on this issue, would you mind answering the following questions and then look back at your last 2 videos on this subject including reading your comments and responses perhaps it will shed more light and in turn you’ll understand.
    1. You alluded to having dual citizenship, and it appears you reside mainly in Nigeria at the moment (just guessing), when you leave Nigeria for the UK (assuming you’re a British citizen), you’re cleared for entry at Heathrow or Gatwick with your British passport right? No one stamps your passport, it’s only logged in the system. When you’re exiting the UK for Nigeria, has any immigration official ever say to you, hey you came in with a British passport so therefore you must leave with a British document? They wouldn’t right, because you’ve got dual citizenship, in fact you exit as a Nigerian (same if you’re an American and leaving the US), no one asks to stamp your British passport out. I’m amazed you don’t get the dual nationality rules ….it has misled a lot of your followers.
    2. You do know that if you arrive the UK (as a citizen) with an expired passport, you will be allowed in by British immigration (same with the US) and when you exit, no official will ask to see your new British or American passport? Because when you leave, how you return is your responsibility.
    3. You mentioned how you know a lot of people who applied and obtained their passports in 2 weeks. Why can’t every Nigerian citizen who applies for a passport get their passports in 2 weeks?
    4. Why is it that when you got to the part where you mentioned the NIN, you mumbled through it so fast? Why wouldn’t you critique the herculean process involved in obtaining the NIN?? The fact that it’s a prerequisite for obtaining/renewing Nigerian passport, and that it’s almost impossible for Nigeria diasporas visiting our motherland to apply and obtain the NIN in a reasonable timeframe particularly for the duration of their stay in Nigeria? Or are you going to suggest that they remain stuck in Nigeria until whenever they get the NIN, at the risk of losing their jobs, mortgages and other commitments/responsibilities??
Finally, you’re so quick in your assertion to sing the praises of how the Nigerian government “accommodated” Nigerians abroad but failed to mention the gains in form of remittance to the local economy from the so called ‘travel with expired passport policy’. Advocate and call on the government to make obtaining the NIN seamless and only after then can anyone point accusing fingers at anyone you claim are not ‘living up to their bargain’. Please @SassyFunke let us not circumvent global policies and rules just to suit our agenda, to thy self be true.
PS. I still love you though ❤

      Thank you for your message.
It appears you've been following my work for some time, and I strive to maintain objectivity in my approach. I'm perplexed and disappointed by your allusion of desperation, as my perspectives aren't influenced by the Nigerian government-I have no vested interests with them whatsoever. Trust me when I say, I DO NOT need them survive or thrive.
Regarding the protocol for leaving Nigeria, as a dual citizen, presenting a valid Nigerian passport upon exit is standard practice. Whenever I travel out of the UK, both passports are requested and checked.
Do you know how many emails I have from Nigerians in the past expressing frustration over rejected boarding of flights to Nigeria due to passport renewal delays, resulting in substantial financial losses. Many are relieved to finally enter Nigeria on expired passports, albeit due to systemic flaws, which I've highlighted extensively across various social media platforms.
While ideally, passport renewals should be expedited within two weeks, the current reality falls short. However, significant strides have been made in clearing backlogs. Shouldn't we acknowledge this progress? Or you want to keep badgering on the negatives?
You mentioned the challenges with obtaining a National Identification Number (NIN). I've created numerous videos and articles to assist individuals in navigating this process more effectively.
I'm committed to publicly addressing shortcomings to drive positive change. But should I not also acknowledge progress? This video specifically addresses the context of Summer Aku's situation.
To clarify for all new and old viewers, my content isn't about disparaging anyone, be it immigration authorities or private individuals. Its core purpose is enlightenment and education, with the aspiration that constructive change will ensue and to help Nigerians navigate travel better.
My goal isn't universal appeasement. Everyone is entitled to craft their own content to convey their desired message.

Summer Aku simply took liberties. Her passport expired 5 years ago. She got away with being rude to that senior NIS official because she is a woman. Yes, women play that card when it favours them. If it was a man, she would miss her flight that day and subsequently pay a heavy fine before she can travel.
