Ian is dead right. I experienced that feeling with Super Mario brothers. The warp zones changed the IDEA of the game from this thing that was linear and unchanging in your approach to this active out of the box secret. And it really wasn’t even so much that Mario Bros had this thing, it awoke the idea that there’s secrets in games every where! It felt like the blinder had been lifted to give us the opportunity to find more of this. Like what else am I missing??? Then Zelda hit our house and it was on.

    • @JazGalaxy

Walking through the wall in Zelda goes unappreciated for that same reason. Miyamoto was about showing how you could set up rules and then immediately subvert those rules. This is why I video games, back in the day, we are so much more mysterious and involving.

For horror movies turned into video games, it's a tough conversation to start with because it already has been produce as its own IP.
    .
Personally, I would love to see Vampire Hunter D done by Platinum Games, House on Haunted Hill would be great mystery exploration games, Last House on the Left would be heavily story-driven.
    .
Bio-Hunter would be another kind of experience, and A Nightmare on Elm Street would be interesting but a fucking challenge to program.
    .
Again, some of the ideas that I pulled are 80% done, but it's fun to dream.

I disagree on the "no AA games anymore" thing. Like my games of the year list -- I kind of see it as "$60/$40/$20 games".
But that can easily be AAA, AA, and B budget games (or indie games).
You have the AAA $60 games like Ratchet and Clank, Hitman 3, Far Cry, and Halo. But lots of games came in at the $40 mark; (or SHOULD be $40 mark more appropriately); like Kena Bridge of Spirits, Mario Golf, that Aliens game, Pokemon Snap, Returnal, Guardians of Galaxy, Biomutant, 100% Id argue Metroid Dread. Many of them came out at $40 or quickly went to that price point. And most were in my games of the year (Not Mario Golf or Aliens).
And a lot of the cheaper B budget indie games are really up there and could be AA games this year like Sakura of Rice and Ruin (was end of last year but I put it in this years games).
I mean I bought Poison Control, Scarlet Nexus, Cruisin' Blast and Lost judgement recently. Those arent AAA are they? But they arent indie.
i guess it depends on your definition. But I still see lots of those mid-tier games.

Disco as head boy I have to say is top notch. Avatar was weird b/c he would come out unmasked and then mask up when the match started. Any Al Snow persona is a great choice for a boy btw. I believe the other Killer Bee is Jumping Jim Brunzel. And finally Billy Jack Haynes was a good worker back in the day but my god has he went off the deep end and has become a crazy man. How would I do a college course on video games?
Probably by era. So everything leading up to the NES, then just separate it by generation. I'd probably also break out arcade games / arcades on their own. Especially if this doesn't happen for another 10 or 15 years because by then... you'll have a lot of people going into college who have never even seen a real arcade or arcade game. It's a special part of the culture I think.
I'd say looking at it by time periods is probably the way I'd do it, calling out special games that really transcended their own generations or had heavy influences on their own generations and beyond.

Gonna be an unpopular opinion I know, but for the teacher/professor, while I'm all for incorporating media like video games into academic curriculum where it's appropriate, I think trying to wedge that into English specifically is really kind of a stretch tbh. I mean, I guess you could do it as part of a general unit about narrative/story structure, but eh, I feel like video games in an academic context are still definitely better suited for say a media studies/communications/even art-related sort of course (and like at a university level at minimum, ideally graduate) than via English.
Maybe I'm just not being imaginative enough, but honestly I think that a major issue with especially humanities in academia today, people are getting far *too* "creative" about how to formulate the curriculum, and I often disliked when it was obvious some teacher/professor was trying to just stuff something in that they had a personal passion for that wasn't actually pertinent to the field with gymnastics to explain why it was relevant and should be in there. Especially as someone who loves the humanities and resents the way they're increasingly being eschewed and derided in favor of STEM, it irks me when teachers/professors take the fact that they're in a humanities field as carte blanche to just shoehorn in and cover their personal/individual interests etc. and reach/BS as far as the actual relevancy. There's also the risk of something like this being perceived as trying hard to come off as "relatable" or make the field/material seem "hip and relevant" which most of the time students see through too and usually has the opposite effect than intended. Remember, especially at the college level and up, most people studying a certain field (like English) are going to be taking it because they actually have a passion themselves *for that area* ,and so it doesn't need to be watered down, transformed by incorporating things like this or made "cool" with gimmicks which usually backfires. And at the lower levels of education, kids generally don't want things they love and think of as separate from school to be blended in there.
IDK...the more I think about it I suppose it sounds like I'm really dismissing the idea (more harshly than I initially intended), and I guess I sort of am. Just don't think that would really work in English curriculum/class at all, and maybe I'm a bit old-fashioned but I feel like it's best if some things stay distinctly separate. Literature is my main passion/interest in life in general, and I like video games obviously, but I can't easily imagine and don't think I would like it at all if the two were fused together in an academic context (and yeah, I know there's literature mainly about video games and vice versa, the vast majority of which I think is crap frankly). Outside of edutainment etc where the academic learning happens *through* video games as a tool directly (which is completely different, nothing I've said in this comment applies to that), the only suitable contexts for studying video games in an academic setting would be if you're teaching a course to students with a major geared towards learning to make them (duh), or "media studies", certain subfields of sociology, etc. type of deal at a graduate school-level. Otherwise, nah. Just my two cents.

People really don't realize that all the Amico controversy is just jealousy of Tommy and Shiggy's friendship.

No. We need more Tommys, not less. More, I say.
The ultimate horror video game? Troll 2 on the Amico, of course! "OCIMA is Amico spelled backwards!!!"
Long Beach public TV? That's a shame. Maybe in 2022, things will improve and Tommy can become one of the sponsors of Hot Seat with Wally George.

I just pony'd up for a new PC and I just play xbox games with the service. I'm out of the console game. Tired of the BS. Old stuff (ps4 and back) is all I need.
