Kawasaki Z125 Pro (2017) vs. Honda Grom (2014) - 125cc Streetbike Shootout

  • Brock takes his best shot at an apples to apples comparison of how the new 2017 Kawasaki Z125 Pro and the Honda Grom will most likely meet up in the real world. Outfitted with identical Brock’s Performance Alien Head Exhausts, Chimera Intakes, Sprint Filters, and even fuel and oil. A Dyno shootout is followed by an all-out street brawl… all without breaking the posted speed limit!
    Watch the fun as Brock also tries not to relive his 'mishap' during the first few seconds of operation on the Grom.

      or sit straight up to balance the bike and keep the weight on the back tire to get an accurate reading on a 4th gear dyno pull.

    Brock, I would love see to see an entire channel of you getting ahold of brand new bikes and breaking them in yourself then hitting the dyno. watching what you did on 650ib's channel, you can deliver more power if you do the work compared to others bringing them to you. dyno wizard comes to mind when I see you work.

Stay tuned!

    if the z125 has an oil filter or spinner would contribute to a slower rev vs quicker rev. so what happens if you use a filtered system on the grom, could the rev limit be increased, and how much quicker would the engine rev up?
    Oh and are you making the Brocks for the 2017 grom? i want one but not sure of the firment.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  7 років тому +1

      That's a great question about the filtered system - we would need to test to know the answer, but what you say makes good sense. The 2017 Grom polished systems should be available by the end of this week. Please contact sales@brocksperformance.com for full details.

    I've see some UA-cam videos with grom with a 300cc and 1000cc. I think 1000cc would be a little to much but maybe a 250 in it? I have a 2009 honda rebel it's fun but when I drove it from Phoenix to yellowstone. the elevation made my speed go from 85 to 45-55mph after I got past Idaho that's when I had power and speed issues.

  • @Thesaviorsway
    @Thesaviorsway 5 років тому

    The z125 stock is 124.63cc, the grom is 124.86cc. Thus the z125 gets an extra 1.5mpg from factory while the grom has extra torque and hp from slightly higher displacement as well as having a longer stroke. The z125 being over square revs higher having a greater top end power but shorter gearing for a lower grunt under acceleration. With modifications the z125 would be the better contender as the stroker crank still makes the over square have higher top end power and the engine would breather better with a 4 valve unlike the grom that's just all about big bore with a weak crank and low rpm.

      There is no performance difference between the 2014 and 2016 Groms, and at the time this video was shot - the 2017 Grom did not exist. We did the best we could to explain the differences between set-up's to give potential new purchasers an idea of what the Z125 had to offer, as fairly and unbiased as possible... Not the best. They are fun, light and not intimidating - but very under powered, which can lead to problems for the inexperienced. These can also not be ridden safely on the interstate, so many rides with friends are out. There are many variables to consider. macaulee davies That's always a tough one for me. I suggest that everyone I know go out and ride a dirtbike for a while before they try the street. You will learn how to control the machine, as well as fall down - who knows... bikes might not be your thing? After, if street bikes are inevitable, the first bike should not have fairings, as there is a 100% chance that it will not stay vertical in the first year... and fairings are expensive. I suggest something with enough power to get out of the way (bigger than a 250), but not enough to be crazy (smaller than a 1000 - unless it's a Harley or cruiser etc.). From there, it's really personal preference. You need to be comfortable - feet on the ground, not worrying about controlling the machine - you need to concentrate on the cars around you. Hope this helps.

      We do not and and you are the first inquiry, btw. Personally, my experience with Kymco scooters has been positive. I belive any decent quality machine with a price point of $1999, is a good thing... we need to get more (young) people involved in motorcycling.

      The price point and kymco reputation drew me to it as a first bike. I'm having a blast. Just hardly any aftermarket parts out and reliable authorized dealers. Considering getting some tools and doing it myself

      I always suggest the genuine OEM service manual and a can do attitude. You can also learn many similar maintenance techniques (chain adjustment, oil change etc.) by watching UA-cam vids. We offer a series of universal mufflers, you might be able to have a local muffler or custom shop help you adapt one - for a better look and sound: www.brocksperformance.com/Universal-Mufflers+C482.aspx

    Why does the Z125 always fire a flame? Oh I love that! However, doesn't seem the Grom does. :(

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  7 років тому +1

      @Novex Gaming - Great Question! The Grom's ECU still maintains active O2 sensor monitoring and adjustment to match emissions specifications, so it is very lean a low throttle openings, but we can map wide open throttle for performance. The Z125 Pro does not have this issue, which allows us to map the entire RPM range. During deceleration, some unburned fuel can enter the pipe and get ignited - causing a harmless pop.

    • @ikari_smh
      @ikari_smh 7 років тому +1

      I really wish the Grom did! I'm a Grom lover, and it'd be cool for it to do that as often as the Z125 Pro.

    I had no idea the power was so low on these bikes. I thought they would be comparable to the dirt bike motors, but it really isn't close. Might be better to just make one of the dirt bikes street legal.

    • @BrockDavidson
      @BrockDavidson  7 років тому

      I feel you. The problem with converting a dirt bike over to a street bike is logistics. It would require EPA compliance and tremendous expense/trouble/hassle/work. You can try the 'home-builder' route, but it's a giant hassle too (some states are better/worse than others) Another Option: A friend of mine installed a 35hp CRF450X engine in his Grom, Its a BLAST to ride!! www.gromforum.com/forum/2014-grom-general-discussion-forum/28290-450cc-grom.html

      @ghostcell030 7 років тому +1

      Yeah that would be really awesome to put in. I had a CRF450 for a while back and that bike was no joke, on the other hand I got my KTM 300 street legal up here in WA without too much effort and those are 2 strokes....hhhmmm. Oh well, it is going to be raining the next 5 months here in WA so I guess I have time to think about it. Thanks for the heads up about the engine swap.

    Unless it's for racing in a 125 category, what's the point of extensive mods that add 2hp to these bikes?! Seems smarter to move up to 250 or 300cc with more than 25hp stock and more substantial wheels and frame that can go on a highway. Gas mileage would still be in the 60+ range.
