we are using mtz 892.2 as our main tractor and it starts really well when theres -24 to -30 degreees of celcius outside. it has 90 horsepower which is plenty for snowplowing if its not too deep.
Mike, you need to send this video to your legislation representatives, show them proof why DEF is not working in cold conditions and should at least have a bypass to work around the problem in cold conditions. Just a thought.
I used to move snow with a JD 4430 and loader. Plugged it in for 2hrs with a blend of #1 and #2 diesel and never had any problems in the extreme cold. It had an AM FM radio to boot. New technology is not always better.
I was on a engine and exhaustsystem Training where we had to check on the def system of an fendt 724 and got told the def freezes at around -10°c so to keep the def pump and injector save a valve would change the flow of the def and the injector would open to get all the def out of the def lines and pump after shutting of the tractor . So if the def was then frozen in the tank there is an heating module right next to the intake in the tank wich would be melting the def ice if you started the tractor. After ten minutes of heating the def the pump would turn on to feed the def injector. Sadly because corona i wasn't allowed to play around with the def system but if i remember correctly the def heater should be running the engine coolant so it might have been okay with the warmth of the webasco but then when it was idling it could have cooled of to much so the def froze again. That's what I suspect being the error but at the deere dealership i work at we haven't had a def issue since im working there so i don't know to much about def systems Fixing the issue of refreezeing def should be engine grill covers so the fan won't suck in to much cold air wich would allow the tractor to warm up propperly
Mike, this would make me absolutely crazy. I think I might go in the back room with the dealer and figure something out. We all know that the manufacturer isn't going to do anything until there is a financial reason to do so.
i guess where probbly glade we bought a 340 case it starts up in the cold with no issues only thing we dont have a loader on it wich we might someday putting a case euro loader onto the 340 magumm
Hey Mike, throw those cheap jumper cables away and make a custom set out of welding leads. They will be much more flexible on the frozen planet of Hoth. I love mine.
I live just over the border from you mike… northern most Montana… farm n ranch… we run a 2020 6155m deere tractor to feed cows from November to April.. we have very little def issues! Parked outside all the time and just plug in the tractor everyday after use! We get cold here too …
Hi Mike, next time you have trouble starting the 724, can you try connecting the jumper cables directly to the starter motor. if that helps then you have a problem with the wiring from the battery to the starter. the engine oil doesn't get warm enough at idle at these temperatures. it helps to put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator so that no air can get through. like the truckers do on their semi trucks or people with their diesel trucks. and if you want to do it right you would have to wrap the engine and put some fiberglass wool on the bottom of the oil pan (that doesn't start to burn quickly) so that the heat stays in the engine. yes that sucks but honestly I would do that because it is better for the engine and you don't have to spend 3 hours starting the tractor. and to bring the hydraulic oil quickly to temperature, you can make a valve between hydraulic hoses that you just plug into a SCV and close the valve a little. until you hear the oil rush. then you get very quickly temperature in the Hy oil. I'm in british columbia right now where it doesn't get cold enough otherwise I would start the 724 that is here. the 514 is at -15C° plugged in overnight just started as if there were nothing. unfortunately I have not tried at the time the 724. and it is very unlikely to be so cold again here. sorry for my English, German is my native language. PS: we don't have problems with the DEF system on our 2 724's here because the tractors are pretty busy and DEF systems need temperature to work properly. if the tractor doesn't have to work hard enough then it doesn't get warm enough and the problems start. Yes the cold also plays a role, DEF starts to freeze at -11C°.
I know the feeling Mike. We just purchased one of the smart chargers for our farm . We all highly dislike it. What it refuses to charge we put the old reliable charger on and it works every time lol. Thanks for the videos.

I had a jcb that didn't like cold morning starting. Then I fitted a geared starter and it never fails. The gearing gives it far more torque. They should leave the batteries that you can remove them in a couple off minutes max. Therefore you can take them home with you in the evening to keep them warm.
That fendt seems like one gigantic piece of “stuff”. I’ve also heard here in the USA that they are releasing basically delete codes for motors to dealers because they can’t get the parts to fix the def systems for at least a year.

I have used a Lincoln portable welder unit mounted on the back my service truck to start the service truck when it's 2 batteries failed from age and neglect and left me stranded on the side of a freeway .. South Sask Farmers new Mccormick starts well with temperatures down to - 45c and it doesn't have DEF issues.... Time to look at a different make of tractor I think.
Mike, make your own battery cables out of welding cable, much better than commercial cables. You can also set up your pickup with a forklift electrical plug, you hook it directly to your battery with a foot or so of the welding cable and you have the other plug on one end of your jumper cables going to the tractor. Quick and easy hookup that way.
absolutely, when I was still farming thats what I had. You can get them from a tow truck supply company Had a port at the front bumper you just plugged the cables into. The cable could handle a massive amp load
Three years ago my Challenger derated as I started across railroad tracks. Thankfully no train was coming and I was able to coast across. Many of us know how you feel. I hate DEF.

Tell them if they can't start it in 20 mins without extra tools (block heater power allowed) to load it on a lowboy and give you your money back since it isn't working clearly. Maybe even lemon laws to cover it if it's noew enough?
Lots of the DEF issues I've run across are caused by operating the tractors like this. With DEF systems you have to get in them and start operating it easy to warm it up rather than firing it up and going for lunch like on a pre emission tractor. With no load in cold temperatures the engine doesn't create enough heat to thaw the DEF tank out in the alloted time causing it to error out.
Here is my suggestion having several preheats myself . Add a heat coil to the transmission . That will solve the problem . I feel so sorry for 'Homesteaders" like yourself. . Back in 06 the first homesteaders built shops out of sod blocks for their fendts
I know it doesn't matter what I think but I totally agree with you about 'DEF' or 'AD-BLUE'. I don't see the purpose. It only seems to be a pain in the posterior. US, Canada, UK, Ireland. It's just stupid. There needs to be an override of some sort. You're right. QUESTION. Would it help to put a windbreak up and park the tractors in the opposite side from the prevailing wind?
Put solar power at that site. Put in sea-cans to form walls of a building, get a vinyl roof to go across the enclosure you made using sea-cans and you can have a 40' wide and deep shop. 6 sea-cans stacked 2 high and you have a 40' by 80' enclosed area to put your equipment in.

I would seriously recommend you pay Princess Auto a visit and pick up a canvas tarp so you can wrap the engine area and place a tiger torch inside a piece of heavy wall steel pipe with a 90 Degree bend on the end and in a very short period of time the engine block will be toasty warm and the equipment will start very easily. Only need propane thus don't have to worry whether generator will start.
I've got a Ford diesel pickup and a Kubota M7 152, no def issues with either one, I do have to run the Kubota at about 1600 rpms or higher when it's -30 plus to heat the def tank though.
over half a meter of snow here in estonia also. 2-3 days ago 12 tons heavy forestry trailer almost went over the bridge because of a snow. luckily hydraulically adjustable drawbar and 4wd on a trailer got us out.
Thanks for the video Mike. I will keep my old 1977 I H 986 with a 8 ft Leon dozer on the front of it. Hard to believe that the new tractors are so unreliable when it’s cold out.
Next year, make sure you park your tractors indoors, use the JD's 4840, 4640 you have on your farm.. Simple & reliable as always. I know you have a rush on new equipment, but see the results - A whole morning goes on starting a simle tractor!! Think about it, young man.
Last summer I was driving a rock truck on a mine in the Yukon and I was running this lovely A40G Volvo truck and the G series trucks are the first with DEF in em. It had 2200 hours on it which is only like 4.5 months of running basically and it ended up sitting for 4 weeks near the end of the season because a sensor saying that the DEF had water in it (there wasnt). After it was fixed two more of the same trucks went down for the same reason. All around the same hours
Mike, I've said it before. But you should look at putting your conex's together to make an L shape or get a 3rd one and make a U shape. Then look at putting a quonset hut over the top. It wont be a heated shop, but will help keep the wind and snow off when parted in the yard.
What´s the difference between the 724 and the 1050, since the 1050 starts just fine? The Webasto should make starting anything a effing breeze. I would think either the batteries are ridiculously underpowered, or the starter is the Mickey Mouse model... Do you have Varta or Sonoco(??) batteries? Those are the only ones we trust in Norway. If you don´t go for some fancy Optima ones at twice the cost. Sidenote: did you not get the cab heater option as well for the Webasto? It could turn on the original fan and circle hot water through the cab heater for you, so your windows are clean when you start up. I love the cell start as well, so you can check if it´s working right even before you leave home. Then I can grab whatever I need to fix it before I leave home. What you need for the def codes is a clever mechanic who knows how to bypass the entire system. There is always a way for the right guy.
I was unfortunately correct. I remember commenting on your video when you first bought your Chevy and saying we had all sorts of problems with our L5P, idling, injector, fuel pump and DEF issues. Glad we’re not the only ones to have that problem lol. Good luck 🍀
What I used to do when I have Frozen equipment is use a 400 thousand BTU Herman Nelson heater the sell them under a couple of brands now. and a parachute or a tarp and put it over the equipment and inflate it with the heater that way every thing on the machine will warm up.
Try pulling the fuse or relay to the DEF and see what happens. If it works put a blown fuse or relay in in case the dealership says you wiped the warranty.
@@theworldaccordingtochris4370 no way, if you wanna delete DEF, youre gonna have to do it the right way, pulling fuses will only cause problems and derate your engine
Don't let these new emissions tractors idle very long or they will give problems. If you leave them for more than 5 minutes Rev it up to 13-1400. Keeps the engine warm and oil pressure up.
if your starter is accessible, you can put a jumper right to the starter. That helps if your starter cable is too small, which I think might be an issue.
And we’re supposed to be going all electric within our life time ? 😂 I thought my jcb backhoe hated the cold , love the videos Mike , im from southern Ontario been watching for a while bought a 20 year old duramax in. Alvaro last may an drove it home stopped in swift current for a coffee on the way and found a fuel receipt in the cabin air filter from swift current in 2011 always wondered if it belonged to someone you knew
I have a few case pumas and live in NY... its been about 0 to negative 15 degrees Fahrenheit....with 2-3 preheat cycles with the key (30 seconds) it start very easily
You have synthetic oil in the engine Mike, don't you put synthetic 10w 30 hydraulic oil as well? I took your advice and put synthetic oil in my 69 4020 jd. I'm glad I did. December and January get chilly here in central Minnesota as well. It will now start at o degrees Fahrenheit sitting outside and only plugged in for an hour or so.
I would like to give you a good advice. I did that with an old car, and it needed 3 quick oil changes AND new oil filters. A syntetic oil will loosen up every single bit of old oil inside the engine. But after that, the engine is 100% clean at the inside, no clumy oil and having absolutley no problems with oil pressure. If that syntetic oil gets too dirty, it will clou up the screen for the oil pump. Have a good one and enjoy that tractor! 👍
I can't even imagine how you deal with the emissions issues on your tractors. I am in ILLINOIS and did snow removal a few days ago. Lucky for me my tractor is 46 HP and doesn't have DEF. It's a Yanmar so it fired right up at 11 F.
Just wondering, I'm in CT but we sled up in NH on the CAN border. Would your tractor start at -25F? We keep a JD Skid steer indoors because it never started in the cold. Be nice to keep the tractor out in the shed but the shed is not heated. Skid steer is used to move snow only and it has no DEF.
I have a 35hp Kubota so now DEF for me either, but I have noticed in the cold doing snow removal it really fills the DPF up and regens happen more frequently than normal. If I had to deal with the DEF issues Mike is dealing with I’d probably light the tractor on fire and cook some marshmallows…
At this point, i think you should look for one older tractor without adblue for winter snow push. Just a bit stonger then Erny :)
we are using mtz 892.2 as our main tractor and it starts really well when theres -24 to -30 degreees of celcius outside. it has 90 horsepower which is plenty for snowplowing if its not too deep.
$100,000 truck and a $400,000 tractor both having DEF issues. Would drive me insane.
Yup, I agree. You can buy a lot of Ernie's for that money.
And that’s why you won’t find anything that’s over a year old with full emissions on it around here. 😂

next time you have trouble starting the 724, can you try connecting the jumper cables directly to the starter motor.

the engine oil doesn't get warm enough at idle at these temperatures. it helps to put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator so that no air can get through. like the truckers do on their semi trucks or people with their diesel trucks. and if you want to do it right you would have to wrap the engine and put some fiberglass wool on the bottom of the oil pan (that doesn't start to burn quickly) so that the heat stays in the engine. yes that sucks but honestly I would do that because it is better for the engine and you don't have to spend 3 hours starting the tractor.

Time to get a handful of no def tractors for the winter maybe two c cans with a roof between them with some heat
Def saving the world one plastic jug at a time.
Mike I think you better find yourself a 7220 like you had with a loader to keep up there to push snow and run an auger
Right?! Should have never traded that tractor!.. And should have never traded the 8285R either 🤷♂️🤦🏻♂️
Thanks Ralph Nader
no, it's the tree huggers
You need a big machinery barn to keep them out of the harsh winter weather.
Next year, make sure you park your tractors indoors, use the JD's 4840, 4640 you have on your farm.. Simple & reliable as always. I know you have a rush on new equipment, but see the results - A whole morning goes on starting a simle tractor!!
Think about it, young man.
Have 2003 dodge 35oo love it runs no def put trans fluid to keep it lubicratit works great.
think its time to go back a few years and buy them older trackers. 2010-2015 or before def was even installed... START Hunting for that
I had the same issue with My T-ruck and it was the Emission Control Valve Sensor
Nothing like a good old Massey with no electronics.
AdBlue is 67.5% water already... That sensor was on drugs or something.
@sleeptyper Yeah and they had to take half the truck apart to fix em
@@sleeptyper there is a def quality sensor inside the tank. Seen them fail before
@@jakehohoho7534 I see. So that users don't dilute def?
Good luck with your def issues in your tractor and truck Mike
Mike, I've said it before. But you should look at putting your conex's together to make an L shape or get a 3rd one and make a U shape. Then look at putting a quonset hut over the top. It wont be a heated shop, but will help keep the wind and snow off when parted in the yard.
If the tractors are out of warranty you can get them re-mapped to get rid of the def. Illegal but effective. Def is not used in many other countries.
I sense a 724 being sold soon.
at this poit it would be less dramatic to just get an old Ford 8340 turbo, 1996-7with an loander. I'm telling you, that model is a beast in the cold
I was unfortunately correct. I remember commenting on your video when you first bought your Chevy and saying we had all sorts of problems with our L5P, idling, injector, fuel pump and DEF issues. Glad we’re not the only ones to have that problem lol. Good luck 🍀
Makes me want to stay with a gas motor on the next pick-up purchase.
@@bigguydiy2184 older diesel or go/stay gas. I’m a diesel guy and no way would I buy a new one.
Next time you buy a $400k tractors make sure it come with a manual cranking handle as standard 😁
Mike can you put a loop on one of the hydraulic services into the case drain and have that running to warm up the hydraulics quicker
What I used to do when I have Frozen equipment is use a 400 thousand BTU Herman Nelson heater the sell them under a couple of brands now. and a parachute or a tarp and put it over the equipment and inflate it with the heater that way every thing on the machine will warm up.
Do you think with the price of fertitlizer going up the price of DEF will rise also?? With def being watered down urea
I've heard people using a heat wrap like you use on pipes wrapped around def tank use splitter at engine block plug to run both at same time
When you said, 'You know what we need to do now?' I started chanting Ernie, Ernie.
Try pulling the fuse or relay to the DEF and see what happens. If it works put a blown fuse or relay in in case the dealership says you wiped the warranty.
It would still throw the code and de-rate the engine
@@joshcrd7925 try it.
@@theworldaccordingtochris4370 no way, if you wanna delete DEF, youre gonna have to do it the right way, pulling fuses will only cause problems and derate your engine
@@rofl1436 not necessarily. I've done it a few times with trucks and it can get you out of trouble or sometimes it can reset a problem.
Damn dude using that tractor in the winter is almost the same as not having a tractor at all
Don't let these new emissions tractors idle very long or they will give problems. If you leave them for more than 5 minutes Rev it up to 13-1400. Keeps the engine warm and oil pressure up.
if your starter is accessible, you can put a jumper right to the starter. That helps if your starter cable is too small, which I think might be an issue.
Fendt needs to update their starter/batteries/cables. It should crank faster than that
And we’re supposed to be going all electric within our life time ?
Put the heater really close and drive away. Lol
I think Mike. its stay home with the Family till March first. Enjoy the winter
Just a thought. Try your battery disconnect to reboot the computer or pull the battery cable right off.
I've worked in those temps and no way is a battery cable going to come off. It's just too cold. Where Mike lives, seeing -50F is not uncommon.
