I disagree. While Atrain's heart was bad, there was no magical way to get better. People don't just magically get good hearts from effort after that kinda damage. As far as anyone knew that's simply how Atrain was going to be from then on. He was just an inferior being at that point to Homelander, like the blind Supe was seen as by him, which makes Homelander feel weak for even having someone like that on the team. Homelander didn't even want him on the Seven at all at that point. He was coerced into it to make up for the bad publicity Stormfront caused to quell rumors of racism. Remember he was the one that kicked him out in the first place?
It's just he's two faced so once Atrain got a heart transplant and could be seen as a worthy supe again it's like Homelander forgot about everything that came before that point.
I wonder how many boomers and GenX’ers are having flashbacks of why they act so insecure and fake tough all the time. We were basically raised this way, minus the attempts at testing superpowers. Any means necessary so our parents had to do as little as possible so that was physical assault, guilt, shame, embarrassment… anything to move our behavior needle quickly so they could go back to doing what they wanted without spending time teaching us how to be actual function humans. Then just send us off in the world pressurized to explode in anger.

I think Homelander crying over A-train's betrayal is understandable for the following reasons:
- He only bullied him in the first half of S3.
- After A-train exposed Supersonic Homelander listened to his request about Blue Hawk.
- Since Homelander controlled Vought after Edgar's arrest he probably gave the green light for A-train's heart replacement thus saving his life.
- He was on good terms with A-train during S4 except for the Deep's blowjob scene, then again the intention was for both of them to say no to him at least once, he didn't mean any of it, thats why he stopped them.
He's still not a good leader to him but from his perspective it makes sense.

This is a satisfyingly realistic when it comes to toxic relationships. Narcissists abuse their victims, and when they can't take it any longer and leave them, they get extremely insecure and only linger on the "good memories" together, and never the wrongs they commited on their victims. This is also how many people tend to stay in abusive relationships, the whiplash of being abused and then the abuser suddenly feeling bad and wanting the "good old times back," as if they could change.

The thing is, Homelander's behavior mirrors history's narcissistic despots. Nothing surprising about how "deluded" Homelander may have been upon knowing that A-Train betrayed him. Homelander is so masterfully written. He is simultaneously aware that the adoration he receives is NOT real, aware of the fear he strikes which allows him to control others, and also personally invested in people's opinions of him, even the ones he recognizes only fear him. He is the child of the incomplete writing of Lord Voldemort channeled through Azula to create the most sympathetically hateable villain of all time. I'm truly not sure if there will EVER be a villain like him again.

Homelander does NOT have the ability to tell if someone is lying by listening to their heart or blood flow. Vought and Stillwell lied to Homelander his entire life and he never knew, Starlight was playing him for a long time andhe never knew until Hughie and the boys got caught, Stormfront was putting on a whole act and playing all of the Seven and Vaught and him until she came clean to him, Maeve lied to him every day for years when she pretended she cared about him.... Homelander finding out he has been lied to has been a theme in this show non stop since season 1. Not only does Homelander not have that ability, but the show has in huge part revolved around him being lied to. He did not come to the conclusion that Starlight was telling the truth in the elevator because he was listening to her heart and blood, he believed her in the elevator because she was incredibly convincing in the face of certain death
