    It's interesting how much it mirrors much of the hate in the UK right now. It's just directed at different people at the moment. People seem to forget that at the end of the day, we're all human. I always tear up at this. Part of the history of every Irish person who's ever lived.

The, another eye for another eye till everyone is blind line is where it get's me. My song for you this evening, it's not to make you sad
    Nor for adding to the sorrows of our troubled northern land
    But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
    I'll tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine
    Isaac he was Protestant and Sean was Catholic born
    But it never made a difference, for the friendship it was strong
    And sometimes in the evening when we heard the sound of drums
    We said it won't divide us, we will always be as one
    There were roses, roses
    There were roses
    And the tears of a people ran together
    It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round
    Another killing had been done just outside Newry Town
    We knew that Isaac danced up there, we knew he liked the band
    But when we heard that he was dead we just could not understand
    Now fear it filled the countryside there was fear in every home
    When late at night a car came prowling round the Ryan Road
    A Catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score
    Oh Christ it's young McDonald they have taken from the door
    There were roses, roses
    There were roses
    And the tears of a people ran together
    I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end
    But I wonder just how many wars are fought between good friends
    And those who give the orders are not the ones to die
    It's Scott and young McDonald and the likes of you and I
    There were roses, roses
    There were roses
    And the tears of a people ran together
    There were roses, roses
    There were roses
    And the tears of a people ran together

    I am Irish & was injured in an IRA bomb blast for the first time aged four. My mother lost hold of my hand as my tiny body was lifted into the air with the blast & I was left with damaged hearing & other injuries. Most Irish people want to live in peace. We have a beautiful island & the continual bombing just damaged the infrastructure in both "sides" of the community & it made no sense at all. I chose this presentation of this song as there was something I wanted to make clear. We all knew that there wasn't enough money around to pay for the supply of all the explosives & weapons which once made our lives a living hell. Before I go further, I want to state that we spent half of our lives in the U.S.A. & love the friends we made there like family but chose to leave & come home. Some of our family still lives in Boston. However, guess where they traced the origin of the bulk of the funds that ruined our lives? The good old U.S. of A. If you gave to "the cause" you were NOT funding "freedom fighters" but thugs & murderers who didn't "liberate" the Irish but made their lives miserable. I also know that, should any other country poke it's nose into America's business, as America has done to other countries, there would be hell to pay. We wish you would clean up the many troubles in your own back yard, instead of funding terrorists out of a mostly inaccurate take on a country not yours to help destroy.

    • @Fingoose69
      @Fingoose69 2 роки тому +4

      So sorry to hear of your suffering. Being from the West of Ireland, my parents kept us in a "bubble" and if any documentary on the troubles came on, it was turned off as they wanted to shield us. Many of us in the South, feel immense guilt for our apathy but I was just a child in the 80s. It was the Warrington bombings in '93, I think were the last straw as just children were the fatalities. Not to make their lives more important than any other lives lost in the troubles but it made most people stop and say "Enough is Enough"

    • @deannatroy8113
      @deannatroy8113 2 роки тому +3

      I don't "celebrate" the death of soldiers on "Australia Day" who were forced to give their lives for those who arranged their deaths on purpose. It disgusts me.
      I fear for the Irish above every nation. The slavery they endured (who's value was least amongst every sort of slave, such as Christian or African), the constant attacks, the violent and forceful eradication of their beautiful culture. I know that the reason for such attacks is because the Irish were a nation of high value; kind, positive, loving, loyal, brave, good people, and thus seen as an extreme danger to wanted future ideals by evil people.
      The U.S. is only a pawn. The old woman "in charge" of England is also a pawn.
      What would you say if I said that a fair while back she arranged and paid some to fly over to Ireland, for the purpose of eradicating random victims? Women... children...
      The only people who are aloud high standing positions in this world, are those who conform to this logic. Every high standing person is an enemy.

    And this country still can't get it together. Whatever side of the border you live on there's something wrong if this doesn't make you think about the suffering. The song describes exactly how it is here, the younger generation want to live in peace but the old sectarian people don't

    • @michelleleonard2264
      @michelleleonard2264 6 років тому +10

      87cherrytart the old secterian people don't? Tell that to the people of Derry who've been tormented by petrol bombs etc constantly for the past week, all by these young people who you claim want to live in peace!! I admit it's a powerful song, but you can't place all the blame on the older generation, when the hatred has seeped into the younger ones, this is sadly the state of the country we live in

    • @whosthis7216
      @whosthis7216 6 років тому +3

      Michelle Leonard and what does peace mean? Half of the people want to live in Ireland, half want to live in Britain. There won’t be peace until everyone is happy, and that is an impossible dream. You talk of “peace”, and yes we’re not living in the 80s now, but it could blow up at any time, the tension and hatred is still there by old AND young.

    • @michelleleonard2264
      @michelleleonard2264 6 років тому +2

      Who’s This? I agree with you, what annoyed me here was Cherrytart saying that it was the older generation who were to blame for secterianism etc, it's not just them!! One of the most famous (and sadly true) quotes are "There'll never be a United Ireland," it's sad but it's true :-/

    • @whosthis7216
      @whosthis7216 6 років тому +2

      Michelle Leonard yes sorry I was replying to her comment not yours! It’s definitely still alive, peace held together because neither side want to revisit the old times, but the hatred still festers, the communities still divided, kids don’t go to school together, one thing changes and it will blow up again. I fear for Ireland if a United Ireland ever happens, and Britain if there’s a feeling of betrayal, as the violence will rise again and all that changes is which group is seen as the terrorism organisation and which is the paramilitary.

    I love youse/Tha gaol oribhse. I'm Scottish and went to a 'non-dom' school ; we had a priest do the Easter prayers then a minister do Christmas and vice-versa, the year after. We all grew up, united as people - Dundee Utd, Dundee, Arbroath, Celtic, Hibs, Aberdeen, Rangers, even Stranraer! We all grew up Scottish and as pals. Most of us are from "mixed-marriages/cross-community'' e.g I was never baptised/christened but my brother was , and we all know people like us. I'm not trying to say I am better or preach about it all, we have many issues here ; but we all have aunties, uncles, girlfriends, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers who are protestant/catholic. And we all voted Yes to Scottish Independence :)

      Alex Mckinstry is it really about religion? Does anyone know the difference between the two denominations of Christianity?
      It’s more tribalism I’d say, passed down from generation to generation.
      Sad.

      @@garyodriscoll7988 yeah I suppose it’s more national identity. Like a Catholic for the North isn’t going to have a problem with an American Protestant, or an Ulster Protestant with an American Catholic

      @@taylormcgrath Agreed. The more I, a Catholic, read up on Protestantism, the more sense that religion made, lol.

    Isac was my friend he cried as he begged them with his tears
    but century years of hatred have ears that do not hear
    an eye for an eye it was all that felled there minds
    and another eye for another eye till everyone is blind
    I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end
    But I wonder just how many wars are fought between good friends
    And those who give the orders are not the ones to die
    It's Scott and young McDonald and the likes of you and I
    There were roses, roses
    There were roses
    And the tears of a people ran together
    There were roses, roses
    roses
    And the tears of a people ran together
