So I read a comment about how they use their notebooks to write down prices and stuff they will need, I also read another one about facts. Now I'm tempted to do one.
To cut cost down on having a (very large) cage I got a cat cage by songnomics ($96 USD) and covered the back where I put the panels that were a 1" wire spacing instead of the half inch that the rest are with a half inch wire spacing hardware cloth that I already had! I stacked it 4 high instead of the layout they had advertised and they are so happy about all the space, but I definitely need to get more rat toys and things to fill it up compared to the rat manor I had before!
Payton no? That’s not always the case. With my two rats, I spent nothing on their cage because years ago I got two bird cages second hand. So technically that’s free while getting rat stuff. Toys aren’t expensive. You can make a lot of the stuff too. Soooooo yeah. I’ve spent $25 on everything for my rats. Which is very low because I got a free cage, I didn’t pay for my rats (they were a gift), I already had bedding from my other pets, fleece is cheap, I made the hammocks and stuff, toys weren’t expensive, and the dollar store exists 😂
Payton just because they got things cheaper doesnt mean its bad? they could’ve found good deals or they could live in a country where things are cheaper
I've seen loads of cages cheap/free on Gumtree. I got like three cages free (1 came with rats I adopted). My current cage I spent about £240 on though (worth it for how easy it is to clean). My basic monthly costs for 3 rats: about 3.5 bags of 20 L Back2Nature paper pellets: € 52.50, about € 10 a month for Science Selective rat food and treats. Plus various costs for spoiling them. Paper kitchen towels for their toilet areas and houses, treats, chew treats. I have to change Snoopy's bedding about 2.5 times a month. That is 18 L of paper pellets for a Savic Royal Suite 95 Double. He is alone in that big cage and uses litter trays so I don't need to change all the bedding that often. Plus I change the bedding in his 4 litter trays about every 3 to 4 days. That is where the remaining 2 L of the 20 L comes in handy. For the two small rats in the half inch mesh covered Imac Play Time cage I have to change the bedding about 3 times a month at about 10 L of bedding every time. They aren't litter trained and also there is no room for litter trays in their cage, so I have to change their bedding more often. Probably once a week when they grow older. hi, I just wanted to let you know, fleece really isn't a very good bedding for rats because it gives them 0 enrichment and it really isn't very absorbent, please consider switching your bedding for the well being of your rats! :)
My friend had a single rat and kept it in a large gerbil cage and it stayed healthy and well for 3-4 years so you don't need loads just as long as you keep it with respect and care and socialise with it yourself
Just because it lived a long time doesn’t mean it had the correct care it just means they got lucky. Just because one person has done something also does not make it right, gerbil cages aren’t suitable or big enough for rats at all, and human socialisation is not enough for a rat and does not replace the need for another rat. Hopefully your friend does a bit more research before getting a rat again, rat care has definitely come a long way and it’s good to utilise what we know now 😌
I have a cat and three rats and actually allow them to interact during play time and none have ever come to harm ( and yes my cat kills and brings in mice from outside) it's weird !
I'm saving up for rats currently and all the supplies costs $105 thanks to that I found a good cage for cheap. I'm getting my rats from two different places. One is a nuetered male and the other two are intact females. The male costs $80 and I'm not sure about the females. This is what life savings accounts are for! I have like $200 in my savings account that I can't take, but my mom is ok with me using it for the adoption fees :)
Did you do a video for Australia in Australia we don't have Petco or PetSmart and the best pet shop in my area isn't even where it's also not even a pet shop it's a Farm Shop or whatever you call it
My cage is the plaza tall rat and *hamster* cage . I don’t recommend it for hamster because it is too tall for them , but it is brilliant for rats ! The cage is £65 on little pet warehouse and it is 80cm tall , 73cm long snd 43 cm wide !
My rats cage costs about £150 and I have 5 rats, also following you on Insta! Edit: They also have about £40 worth of toys and 2 water bottles that cost £1.50 each.
If you want to save money, don't buy hammocks. They are around $10-15 and get chewed up quickly but you can just make your own by cutting holes in the corners of a square piece of cloth. The rats don't mind that it is DYI and it saves a ton.
Where I live it costs $150 for three rats in America if there breeder rats and not pet store but from the pet store it’s only $15 for one rat they don’t make u get two or more
@@Emiology Thank you! Love your vids! I just started to watch them, and I learned so much about rats. Something really funny is that I learned so much, that I convinced my parents to let me get my own! I am adopting 3 baby girls on Thursday. Thank you so much for teaching all of us that rats can make great pets, and that all animals deserve the best.
I have four rats (Sam, Muffet, Beatrice & Caprice) I got Sam and Muffet from a pet shop for $15 each. I got Beatrice and Caprice today, actually. And I got Caprice (shes a ''blue rat'') for $20 and Beatrice for $10. So it can cost from $10-30.
I’m not even kidding. First of all I’m getting 4 rats and the cage comfortably fits more than 13 rats and I’ve spent over £100 (and I’m still not finished getting them stuff) on toys/treats etc not to mention that my brother got stuff for them and so have my parents. The cage takes up like half of my room 😂 (Luckily my mum makes the hammocks because she’s really good at sewing ^^)
My calculations (in the netherlands) came to 315 euro ex. The rats themself for the first setup. Tough this does include a hammock (there also comes one with the case ill buy) which my sister will make for me. Tough it would still mean getting like 20 euros a month for bedding unless you can buy and store it in bulk. Besides that the toys which they will and may chew up... So i guesd a save estimate would be like 40 euros a month if you want a full cage and happy rats. Tough it should be less than that but i rather calculate too much than too little ;) And the VET also is a big point *_* Well, at least there is a specialized vet like 200 to 300 meters from my house xD
Our little boy's cost us about £20 a week and that doesn't include the £40 a month we are paying for the insurance we have got for our little boy's and we will be getting 2 more next month so we are looking at around £80 a month just on insurance but I believe that it's important to have insurance for peace of mind
It’s crazy how much startup costs are I still don’t have everything and I’ve already coughed up 500+ dollars CAD and I don’t even have the rats yet 😂 I’m making sure I have absolutely everything before I bring these beautiful creatures home
I'm getting two male rats soon and I was wondering how much vet bills cost in the UK (possibly from a vet like natterjacks). I'm only 14 so I dont work and can't make money but I do get pocket money haha (sometimes £50/month) so it would be good to know how much to save.
Depends what for, a standard vet visit at my cheap vets for antibiotics which is what you’d usually go for is £35 but a more expensive vet in another area can be £70-80
I spend so much money on my 12. It isn't even funny. I really should budget better 😂 but it just makes them so happy and they keep destroying stuff. Did I miss anything on Lou's stream Emi?
I have a question I’m looking for buying a rat and the cage costs £75 which my mom is hopefully paying for so I’m able to buy the Food,Toys and the actual rats the only problem I have is How do I convince my dad? and how can I stop a rat from falling off the bed?
Hey, I wanted to get pet rats, but I wanted to adopt like 4 rats at the same time ... my question is, is it going to be harder to tame them? I use to own 1 rat tamed it and introduce another rat ... so I don’t really know how it’s going to be if I get several at the same time. Thanks you( they unfortunately both passed away )
I'd imagined it would be quite a handful ! Personally I'd find it easier to get two and tame them for a month or two and then get two more, but if you think you could manage it go for it! 😊
Imee's World alright thanks I think I will do what you said ... it was because I didn’t want to deal with introducing the new pet rats ( it scares me a little ) but yeah 4 rats might be a lot
You didn’t mention that you may need or want to neuter or spay tour rat which will cost extra. I got my boy mulberry neutered yesterday and it cost me £80. :)
I only mentioned things that most people will end up spending but neutering kind of comes under the unexpected vet bills part because you never know if your rat is going to end up needing to be neutered 😊
My pet store rats have been driving me crazy with cage bar biting and I’m totally inexperienced so I don’t know what to do. Do you have any suggestions?
Rats that are chewing bars are usually either bored or stressed by something. Make sure they have enough things to do in their cage, things to chew on but also some puzzle toys they can do to occupy themselves when you're not around. If you find they're chewing the bars at a specific time (in the middle of the night) make sure they're getting enough outside of the cage time right before this happens, so let them run around your room and get their energy out before you sleep (half an hour to an hour if you can) and they should settle down a lot
My dad will pay me for chores and I currently have a hamster, so after my year and a half old man passes (as soon as I'm not depressed about it), I'm going to try to convince my mom and step dad (shouldn't be too hard since I'm willing to pay for everything unless I absolutely can't) to get a pair of rats so I was thinking on saving about 700-750 dollars to start and keep making money as I can since I'm 13. I just wanna know if it seems like a decent idea or if I should increase the initial amount.
Kaylee_Wolf my hammie died last month and I’m looking into getting rats! But 750$ should be fine. Once you get them keep saving money for them just in case :) x
Hi I’m interested in getting rats and I have wanted them since April this year. But I was wondering if shredded newspaper is a good bedding as it is free for me as I have a shredder and newspaper subscription. The only reason I ask is because I have seen it on a video. Please help 💓💓💓
It’s not the best! You have to be careful what type of ink is on the paper as some are toxic, but it’s also not the most absorbing bedding. It would be okay as nesting material but not for the main bedding on the base of the cage
I really want rats but one my parents won’t get me any since we have three dogs , two we don’t have much money again because of the dogs and three I use to have a hamster which I didn’t really touch much because she was timid and had an accident when we first got hers oof hey think I can’t handle rats

3 biggest things aside from initial set up cost is Bedding, food and of course possible vet bills
Hey, does anyone know were to get the plastic liners for the critter nation that you put at the bottom so you can add more bedding so they can burrow?
From a local pet/equestrian shop I can get a 20kg bag of aubiose (hemp bedding) for £10 so bedding price really can vary on where you get it from
Did you do a video for Australia in Australia we don't have Petco or PetSmart and the best pet shop in my area isn't even where it's also not even a pet shop it's a Farm Shop or whatever you call it
Oh my gosh the intro😍
My cage is the plaza tall rat and *hamster* cage . I don’t recommend it for hamster because it is too tall for them , but it is brilliant for rats ! The cage is £65 on little pet warehouse and it is 80cm tall , 73cm long snd 43 cm wide !
Off topic, where is your phone case from?? 💕 love your videos xx

Thank you 💖
No problem! 💖
Where do you buy your hammocks?
My rats cage costs about £150 and I have 5 rats, also following you on Insta!
Edit: They also have about £40 worth of toys and 2 water bottles that cost £1.50 each.
Your ratties are spoiled lol
She said only two rats.... how many does she have
She has 4.
I am watching this while my boys are having free run
I'm getting rats after school goes out, so excited!!!
Omg this was soooooo helpful tysm
If you want to save money, don't buy hammocks. They are around $10-15 and get chewed up quickly but you can just make your own by cutting holes in the corners of a square piece of cloth. The rats don't mind that it is DYI and it saves a ton.
im getting rats so this really helps thanks
Where I live it costs $150 for three rats in America if there breeder rats and not pet store but from the pet store it’s only $15 for one rat they don’t make u get two or more
You get what you pay for :) Worth paying more for a healthy friendly rat that probably wont cost you as much in vet bills
A cheaper option is kitten or cat play pens. It’s SOOOO much cheaper and it’s the same size then a regular cage. It’s like $90
How often do you need to clean a mouse cage
Do you have any trap neuter and return programs in your country? We have plenty in the U.S. That will save a lot of money.
This video is about rats not cats 👀
If I want to make my own hammocks, what would be the best material for making them?
Fleece probably!
I have four rats (Sam, Muffet, Beatrice & Caprice)
I got Sam and Muffet from a pet shop for $15 each. I got Beatrice and Caprice today, actually. And I got Caprice (shes a ''blue rat'') for $20 and Beatrice for $10. So it can cost from $10-30.
Please do a video on how to tame rats
Universal Healthcare in the UK only covers people?
Yep. And barely even that these days
I’ve not even got my rats yet and they’re already spoilt
I’m not even kidding. First of all I’m getting 4 rats and the cage comfortably fits more than 13 rats and I’ve spent over £100 (and I’m still not finished getting them stuff) on toys/treats etc not to mention that my brother got stuff for them and so have my parents. The cage takes up like half of my room 😂
(Luckily my mum makes the hammocks because she’s really good at sewing ^^)
My calculations (in the netherlands) came to 315 euro ex. The rats themself for the first setup.
Tough this does include a hammock (there also comes one with the case ill buy) which my sister will make for me.
Tough it would still mean getting like 20 euros a month for bedding unless you can buy and store it in bulk.
Besides that the toys which they will and may chew up...
So i guesd a save estimate would be like 40 euros a month if you want a full cage and happy rats. Tough it should be less than that but i rather calculate too much than too little ;)
And the VET also is a big point *_*
Well, at least there is a specialized vet like 200 to 300 meters from my house xD
Our little boy's cost us about £20 a week and that doesn't include the £40 a month we are paying for the insurance we have got for our little boy's and we will be getting 2 more next month so we are looking at around £80 a month just on insurance but I believe that it's important to have insurance for peace of mind
Where I live on wish hammocks are $2-3 or we can make some!
Thank god I’m a kid! If I wasn’t, I would have to pay for everything for my Rats
I know this video is quite old, can anyone tell me a good brand of bedding that you can buy in the USA? :)
@owen? Thank you!
wait, on mine it says the video was posted today!?
It’s crazy how much startup costs are I still don’t have everything and I’ve already coughed up 500+ dollars CAD and I don’t even have the rats yet 😂 I’m making sure I have absolutely everything before I bring these beautiful creatures home
hi can u get a cage what fits 6 rats and only put 2 or 3 in?
yes, the more space for them the better
Such a lovely video! 😍
Where are the Euros at!?
Any stores you recommend to buy rat products are their any good online stores that sell cages
Zooplus, pet planet ☺️
Emiology thank you for the reply and thank you for the places
Haha I was looking at that just for a cage 😅
I'm getting two male rats soon and I was wondering how much vet bills cost in the UK (possibly from a vet like natterjacks). I'm only 14 so I dont work and can't make money but I do get pocket money haha (sometimes £50/month) so it would be good to know how much to save.
Depends what for, a standard vet visit at my cheap vets for antibiotics which is what you’d usually go for is £35 but a more expensive vet in another area can be £70-80
@@Emiology Okay, thank you.
I love when people call me a rat because they are so cute lol I say tysm
How do you litter train your rats
I have a video on it ☺️
That purse is so cute where’s it from
Primark!
My mum owns saintly pet snacks and last year was in your video at the rat show plz reply x
Oh I've worked with your mum before and included her treats in the subscription boxes I used to do! 😊😊😊
Can I get a one story cage from critter nation for two girl rats? Literally having a debate about this with my hubby.
Yep ☺️
I read the single critter nation can hold 5-6 rats, I will be keeping 2 rats in a single too, seems spacy enough :D
I spend so much money on my 12. It isn't even funny. I really should budget better 😂 but it just makes them so happy and they keep destroying stuff. Did I miss anything on Lou's stream Emi?
Woah
That’s a lot of rats lol
The intro😻
coud you possibly reccommend me a rat breeder if you got your rats from the uk?
I would really like if you could add rands too I'm not in the mood to do maths though i'm kinda good at it🐀
I can’t add every single currency unfortunately
Would you have any advice on how to introduce rats to other animals?
I really wouldn't recommend introducting them to other animals 😊
Imee's World ahh ok was just wonderin
Bwahaha, I get 2 rats next month and already spend 500 dollar xD Cage, toys. I'm pretty sure I'm prepared :D
