  • Pastured Pig Breeding - Berkshire Duroc Pork
    Today we are breeding one of our sows for future piglet production. This is a proven sow who has already had 2 litters of pastured piglets on our farm. She is about 1 1/2 years old and is a very healthy pig.
    We are also checking in on our group of pastured pig gilts which has one pig that still has not come into heat to be bred. These pigs are the future of our farm and we are working to build our breeding herd off of this group.
    Our pastured piglets that are in the weaning pen are ready to be moved out but we have a small problem in getting their new paddock set up.
    Finally its time to move the sheep! Watch as we set up a new grazing paddock for our sheep to move into and begin grazing their new area.

    Gonna try to AI my gilt on her next cycle. Hope it doesn't get too hot before she farrows. Guess it's better than below freezing! ;-)

    I use Joel Salatins rule of thumb of 12 days max for pig moves (before the pest cycle reaches the point of re-infection), although I can't think of a time we've ever made it to 12 days before our soil and the pigs were ready for a move. As far as sheep, if you're moving them at all and feed them grass you're going to be doing a lot better than the commercial producers that are making moves in the US with sheep.
    y'all are hilarious, thanks for the info

    What you need to do is, paint the outside white, put a roof over it and put some sawdust or insulation between the new roof and the top of the cooler. When the summer comes, its going to cause that evaporation system to work like crazy to remove the heat absorbed by that black paint.

    Yep done all that on the pig unit i worked on, some we bred ourselves and some we brought in from a commercial breeding farm these would come in at around 3-6 weeks old around 150 at a time, when you went into feedvit got very noisy, the way we fed was floor feeding the amount of feed was determined by the number of pigs in the pen and their age but the basis was 2lb - 3lb per pig

      @@SheratonParkFarms yes geoff it was the farm was a agricultural college which ran day release courses where farmers who had young guys and girls working on the farm were given 1 day per week off too attend the college this would all culminate in exams at the end of the course which were 2 years long.
      With the sheep general rule for stocking is 5 sheep per acre but if you are breeding you double the area as you need to allow for lambs, other reasons you move them is you are more likely to get heavy worm investation if you leave them on the same grazing too long, if you graze sheep and cattle together you usually stock 1.5 sheep too the acre

    I know you probably what to keep everything pretty natural but you can always use a shot of pg600 or a couple of shots of Lutalyse or some stuff called Matrix to bring her into heat or also help get your herd synchronized together

      If you are asking about the one we AI, she is a mutt. Has a little duroc, berkshire, and tamworth in her. The girl I purchased her from didn't know what all was in her background. She is a good pig!

    I meant to ask this last night but I felt like I had asked enough. Out of all the land you own and lease. How many acres do you have pigs on at a time. Also what’s the recovery rate on the land after you run pigs on it?

    • @SheratonParkFarms
      @SheratonParkFarms  3 роки тому +1

      So right now I have pigs on about 1 1/2 acres. When this last 2 groups comes out of the weaning pen we'll probably be on about 3. I give a spot at least 6 months rest before we go back on it.

      We have a cold storage warehouse about 10 minutes away. We have an agreement with them for use of a refrigerated truck and storage space if we had to move everything out. Also have a generator on standby for a power outage.
