The entire cast of Gone with the Wind was perfection. Who would have thought a British actress would win the part of Scarlett, and a British actor as Ashley; both playing Southerners. I read when David O. Selznick first saw Vivian in person, he knew immediately he had his Scarlett.
I can't agree about Paulette Goddard's acting which was inferior to Vivien Leigh's, and I don't think that David Selznick ever considered her seriously!! She may have been a good candidate before Vivien Leigh showed up , but Selznick had considered Vivien Leigh before he saw her or she was on his list to be considered for Scarlett O'Hara!
@@sarahgodwin-xd1wr Paulette Goddard was the only actress other than Vivien Leigh who has done a color screen-test for the role, I would say David was serious about casting her. Vivien Leigh showed up only because she accompanied Laurence Olivier to America when he was making Wuthering Height in Hollywood. Someone might have suggested Vivien Leigh to David O Selznick prior to that but there is no way he could anticipate she would actually fly from England for a screen test.
@@benleung6331A documentary on the making of the film by Selznick’s son does say Vivien heard about the part in the UK and was desperate to audition. At that time, Myron Selznick-David Selznick’s brother and Leigh's American theatrical agent-was the London representative of the Myron Selznick Agency. She was introduced to the director by him and rest is history. As for Paulette Goddard - she was dating Charlie Chaplin then and both were already close friends with Selznick, Warners and George Cukor.
@@badabingbadaboom6333 Vivien was indeed interested in playing Scarlett but so were half of the actresses in Hollywood. Remember at this point Vivien Leigh was only an upstart in the London stage who received *some* positive review, not a household name even in her native England. What would give her any advantage over hundreds of other actresses in America just because she was desperate to audition? There's no doubt Vivien Leigh is a much more complete actress than Paulette Goddard but until she screen tested for the part there is no evidence that David Selznick has considered her for Scarlett O'Hara, and her audition happened only because Laurence Olivier was making Wuthering Height and Leigh accompanied him to Hollywood, not because the Selznick brothers brought her in from England. Without Leigh in the scene, the producer *has* to consider someone and Paulette Goddard was the best candidate up to that point, with or without (or even in spite of) Charlie Chaplin's connection. In fact, that is the mystic of the eventual casting of Scarlett O'Hara because it is as unlikely as it is brilliant.
Joan Bennett was literally identical to VIven in mannerisms body and looks. But Joan is a bit reserved and calmer, Viven had a natrual scarlet feel with fire.
So interesting to hear these auditions like how many ways you could deliver lines like I love you. Only three words and seems so hard to kill it. Vivien did!
I read the book before watching the film. Back then, I thought Ms. Leigh was too much. That first impression didn't stay much longer with me: she is Scarlett.
In the book “Gone with the Wind Letters”, Margaret Mitchell only said this once, and once only. about Scarlett and Rhett, she said, “ I think she gets him back”. 😊😊
Some of the actresses that went for the part, such as Paulette Goddard and Susan Hayward, I thought were close for Scarlett but some, such as Lana Turner, were all wrong. Tallulah Bankhead was also in consideration but I didn't find her attractive at all.
Vivien Leigh killed them all.
Vivien Leigh was Scarlett Ohara.
real
Vivien Leigh is and will be Scarlet O'Hara forever and ever
Absolutely.
Yes. These were awful, but it was not their fault. We get to compare these ladies NOW with the brilliance of the Leigh portrayal.

Paulette was close. Vivien waa born to play Scarlett.

Vivienne Leigh was the perfect combination of stunningly beautiful and a cat! 😂😂😂
Yesss
I would never call her a cat !!!! She was an English Lady!!!
@@sarahgodwin-xd1wr A cat can be a perfect lady .... when she so chooses to be.
She didn't over act and was more subtle.
So interesting to hear these auditions like how many ways you could deliver lines like I love you.

Vivien did!
Selznick made the right choice in choosing Vivien Leigh to play Scarlett O'Hara. She was perfect for the role.
indeed she was the perfect match
Agree.. a few came close, but the right women was chosen..this was so interesting. 😊
Hattie McDaniel was the best.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
Really only vivien❤❤❤
Vivien Leigh she was the most vivacious vibrant and most beautiful for the role scarclet
Vivien Leigh captured the soul of scarclet.
I read the book before watching the film. Back then, I thought Ms. Leigh was too much. That first impression didn't stay much longer with me: she is Scarlett.
Vivien was a perfect choice for the role of Scarlett O'Hara
Paulette came very close, with enough coaching she could have pulled it off. Lana was surprisingly good.
No, Goddard wasn't even close. Vivien Leigh is the only one!!
I did like Joan Bennett
Vivian played a good spoiled brat.
She looked and acted too old for the part.
In the book “Gone with the Wind Letters”, Margaret Mitchell only said this once, and once only.
about Scarlett and Rhett, she said, “ I think she gets him back”. 😊😊
Vivienne Leigh was the best for this role Gone with the wind
🌹Vivien Leigh was "PERFECT" for Scarlett. Mamie, Rhett Mr. O'Hara the cast was phenomenal.
No one could have played her other thrn Vivien
Vivienne was perfect
Pauletts imitation of Mammy is AWESOME
後の大女優キャサリン・ヘップバーンもスカーレット役を望んだが、セルズニックはこう言ったそうだ。「僕にはレットバトラーが君を何十年も追いかけるとは思えないんだ」キツイけど本当だった。

Nobody’s perfect it takes a while to become good or amazing, A bit like making toast
Paulette Goddard was pretty close her Scarlett would have been pretty interesting
.
VIVIEN
I think Lana Turner did well, honestly
A little young but she did well in the second clip. A much better actress than people give her credit for.
ハリウッドの女優は2種類しかいなかつた。スカーレットに合格したか、しなかったか。これを観るとハッティマグダニエルは最初から決まっていたようだ。彼女も偉大だ。
Where is this from? Great clips!
Paulette was the closest, but I wonder why Maureen O´Hara wasn´t considered
What were they thinking with Tallulah?
Joan Bennett was very good.
They’re all so bad 😂
What on earth was that Paulete girl doing, that was creepy 🤮
I thought she was the worst. Paulette’s trademark was a sort of harsh edge - totally wrong for Scarlett!
@@MTknitter22 i thought she was horrible too, but when he said they she was one of the one sthat made it to top 3 i was really shocked
I so agree with you !!! She was ridiculous and creepy!!!
Ms Goddard was an attractive woman.
@@ssam1820 I really don't think that Selznick ever was going to let her star in GONE WITH THE WIND and play Scarlett O'Hara !!! She was awful !!
Margaret Rutherford would have been GREAT!!!!
😅😅😅😅😅😅
Was Martha Raye tested?
Paulette was better
Jean Arthur was terrible.
The blonde? Wrong for the role obviously but she tried.
Her choice to hug the pole was similar to vivien’s so she was smart enough to do that.
Yes she was. And born in 1900 made her way to old to pull off the young Scarlett. The character goes from 16-27 in the film.
Time stamp?
Kathy. She was more suited for romantic comedy. Her voice was squeaky. Not a fan.
