  • Let's go behind the scenes at the Cheetah Rescue and Conservation Centre (CRCC) for a routine enclosure patrol!. Today, this frontline conservation centre is home to nearly 100 resident cheetahs, most of them rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and cases of human-wildlife tracking. Many of the cheetahs at the centre arrived as young cubs, under stressful conditions, and as a result, have health complications that require long-term veterinary care and limits their capacity for rehabilitation into the wild. Instead, these cheetahs spend their time in spacious enclosures that provide a naturalistic habitat - allowing the resident cats the freedom of movement that is vital for their well-being and rehabilitation.
Part of the care routine for these resident cats is a fence patrol and fecal collection - and, as Clinic Manager Karlene Parrish points out, the practice is especially important to proactively identify any potential signs of health issues. And, because the CRCC is situated in the midst of an 1,800 acre forest reserve, during these regular fence patrols, staff also commonly see local wildlife - including slender mongoose, squirrels, baboons, and a wide variety of birds (like the northern white-faced owl spotted recently).

Until August 31, you can make double the impact for cheetahs with a contribution to Chewbbaaka’s Wild Cheetah Challenge!
