I just came across this video and I completely agree that playing sealed is better than buying packs. Getting 0 wins, you're only out the rare wild card from the track that you would get if you did arena packs instead which can be offset by just getting one win at which point you're coming out ahead. I just really wish that instead of draft tokens and sealed tokens, that we would just get limited tokens to spend on any of the limited formats. As someone who prefers sealed, I would much rather spend any draft tokens on sealed events. It would also be nice if sealed counted towards my limited rank. Great video though!

As a new Arena player that recently did drafts to start to build a collection, do NOT spend more than like $50 doing any type of quick draft or sealed, it's not worth the trade off for losing wild cards. Wild cards are everything when there is a certain type of deck you want to build, and you are really limited to a couple of decks if you are serious about completing for the best card selections!
I have 25 rare wilds, 15 mythic rare wilds, and like 42,000 gold, just came back to MTG:A (stopped right after open beta ended). What should I do? IphoneFan5 here - This post is exactly my thought process as a weaker player. I rarely get above 50% in any format, and several formats my win % was < 40% meaning that I averaged less than 2w/3l per event. With sealed, this puts me between 177 & 155 per pack which I am very happy with. I also suffer less anxiety since I know worst case scenario, I'm only spending 1800 gems to get 9 packs. After I do about 10 sealeds (without opening the packs), I'll switch to quick drafts. I *ALWAYS* rare draft which hurts my win % some so I'm ecstatic if I can get a 40% win rate in quick draft. I guarantee get 3 rares that I drafted and 1.2 rares as reward so 4.2 rares for 700gems is 166gems per rare which is roughly the same for me as a sealed even. Quick draft has the advantage of sometimes getting extra rares. My record is drafting 6 rares which was fantastic. :) Another upside to sealed is that by saving my 3 prize packs until the end, I get far more 5th card protection in completing the set compared with doing a lot of quick drafts. After doing about 10 quick drafts, I'll then just round out the set by buying packs with gold. The 5k gold price point for a QD event is a little steep for me since I average < 5 rares per draft. I get annoyed that only sealed is viable at the start of a set - gems only is annoying, I wish they just made the quick available straight away. I'm a free to play player so gems are earned, and you can in a season typically earn 6-7k so enough for the mastery and a couple of sealed at the next set. Sealed is a good way to start at the beginning of a set, it is very surprising how fast you get the collection up in the first week or so just generally playing. If I could use gold for sealed id play more often. But I can only afford a 2/3 goes a season since I sink no money into the game, gems are hard earned.
I suck at this game. Once in a great while ill win 2 times in standard event. I got to 3900 gold and then lost it down to 1500 gold. Can you send me a link to some builds that will help me win so I can get some rares because all I'm getting are uncommons and the decks I've found I dont have the cards. The best deck is the lifeline one that I won. Also when I play standard event do I only get cards from the latest set and if I want to build a deck how do I know which set a card comes from?
I used all my gold on drafts all the last set and ended up with 7k+ gems ... bought the mastery pass for 3400. Paid for sealed twice. Got 3 and 4 wins though and had another lucky draft for 10k gold and I was able to do a third Sealed draft. It's a grind yes. But I haven't paid any $$ since last spring
I also have a free to play and am able to buy the pass and do almost 1 draft per day on it. If I have a bad week I need to break and do quests for a few days.
I think this might no loger apply to bros war set with the inclusion of ""golden packs" I think you can just purchase packs and be collection complete that way if you only care about constructed, are not good at drafting or do not have the time to draft.
You could have touched on how a given set might be better for playing sealed or if its harder. Like Ikoria felt easy to splash and there should be an easier chance in sealed Ikoria to draft 3 or 4 colours where as Kaldheim, one sealed that I opened, I didnt get any tools to splash so trying to play 3 colours means I have to draw into lands (because the tools to splash are harder in this set). I kind of wish sealed gave you rewards based on the ease of the set's ability to play 3 colours.
Well each sets difficultly level is different. And I do have videos that go through game play and rating to help players get better. But this was strictly about the numbers. A harder set is harder for everyone and that doesn't change the payouts / prize pool.
Jump in (which didn't exist at the time when this video was made) is also a good value IF your collection is really modest. 2 rares per 1000G is a good ratio even if many of those rares aren't competitive. I hope Jump In will become semi-permanent, it looks great for new players
thanks for the informative content ! could you please also cover "draft tokens" in the next vid ? (i'm mostly interested in expected value for "limited scrubs")
Buying packs has become more viable right now, with the introduction of gold packs. You basically get 16 rares/mythics for the price of 10000 gold. Though, premierdrafts are still better if your winrate is 50% or above.
I play until I get 3 wins, i quick draft to get coins. So I do 4 or so sealed pulls. Then quick draft when it is available. I have plenty of wild cards.
It isn't exactly a freeroll because wildcards do have value and you lose 6 ticks by going for sealed instead of purchasing packs. Still, sealed is a quite good deal. I'd say that 0 wins is a slight loss, 1 win is break-even, 2 wins is a slight profit. 3 wins+ is a good profit.
Not to sound repetitive, but thank you for making this vid. I wish i would have realized this sooner. Also excited to watch you and CGB continue to play matches together.. Big fan of both of you!!
I recorded this after a 12 hour stream. I'm honestly not sure how I made sentences. I'm glad it was the only error. I learned to put the overlay words up this time (not sure if you noticed it)! So it was a good moment to learn to edit better!
in tested this draft companion now on kaldheim draft and im not to impressed. when im drafting normally it doesnt tell me to much, helps a bit to get a more flat mana curve, cause i sometimes dont have the overview about that and give a more or less usefull Deck build advice, but nothing i would pay 8 Dollar per month for. then tested the deck builder with the intention of Simulation being totally new to drafting, just picking always the card with the highest Rating. Result was a white green aggro deck with 1 good combat trick, 2 flying creatures, tons of manafix and a skemfar (lol). the deck builder cutted out every card that wasnt green or white, even after he drafted 4 elves that make you a mana of your choice and a pike axexD oh and for the deck builder the 5th of a kind was worth more, then a card you dont have already 4 times xD the deck went loss, win, loss in the first three quickdraft rounds, and the one win was because on the lowest draft level my enemy was to stupid to count right lol spiced up the deck after that with some red and black splashes, and won 3 more rounds, cause with the deck builder deck i would have lost 0:3 or 1:3 in a quickdraft, while having ok packs. so no guaranty for an ok deck for beginners and not so much of an plus for experienced drafter, that the price would be worth it. the card ratings are standard, there are tons of assistants who give you that overview and its free for a reason. the advanced rating is doing pretty weird stuff, like giving a giant plow a 34 point gold rating or rating down cards who could spice your deck up just to hold the mana curve perfectly flat and cut it at 4... that often irritates and is pushing cards to a low rating who are the better pick if you dont stuck in this "pick 21 must be this, to flatten the holy curve! who cares that there are some much better picks, they dont have mana cost of 3!" algorythm. tldr: the draft companion isnt better then other draft companions who are for free and the money option gives you nothing that would be worth this price.
I only recommend the free side if it. I've never used the paid version. And you mention its not good for experience drafters. If thats the case you are not the target audience for this video. Really the ratings guide is all I wanted to share. I hate paid apps! Lol
2000 gems is A LOT for a casual mostly F2P player. That player needs to keep gems for the mastery pass. Of course, if the casual player turns all of their gold into gems by drafting (and have a good win rate) they can afford it.
Hey! This is the sealed video. Check out the draft one that goes over the ev for all players and drafts. Also with tokens there is not reason to enter lower!
Sealed is a bad deal. Buy packs for rares. Only if youre good at draft and you want that set should you draft with humans. Bot drafting is not as good because just like sealed its based on luck of the packs. Where as in draft its about your drafting skill and because a lot of people can’t draft correctly you can gain the upper hand and have advantage. There is almost no advantage in sealed and little in bot drafting outside of getting rares.
@@MTGNerdGirl I'm not saying your math is wrong, I'm just saying that you gotta be good at limited to get 2,000 gems for sealed, let alone do well. The somewhat marginal return of investment in limited in general just makes me unsure, that's all. In no way did I mean any rudeness, just sharing my opinion
Limited isnt great value. But when compared to just buying packs (the idea behind the video) it is always better. :) thats all I'm saying. It is expensive. But so is buying packs!
This is bad advice for anyone but new players just fyi. You need to maintain a better than average win rate to make the value work better than packs for rares.
@@MTGNerdGirl let's say you have absolutely no interest in draft. You take no steps to get better at it because you honestly don't like the format. You are very likely to go 0-3 or 1-3 in the event. In that case, in terms of wildcards, you will have spent anywhere between 5-10 packs (nearly 1-2 wildcards) worth of gold and have 1 pack (1/6th of 1 wildcard) to show for it. There are plenty of reasons to draft in terms of filling out a collection when you aren't absolutely flush with common and uncommon wildcards, or don't care which rares you pull, but for wildcard farming the cards you really want, you have to perform well in the events or it isn't worth the investment.
So we are pretending the person only wants Wild cards and hates limited? And thats what makes it bad advice even though my math is right? Thats very specific and not the point of the video at all. At the end of your last comment you started to get the point of the video. This is to give people a better rate on rares of a specific set. Not for wild card hunting. Purely for collection building.
@@MTGNerdGirl I apologize if that was a youtube-comment-y response. Just wanted to address a consideration that I personally failed to make when I was first told about limited for collection building. Wildcards are the most important thing for standard players with any kind of baseline collection to work with.
This is about sealed to start. 2 wins in below average and 3 wins is average. 3-3 is 50 50. This is where I try to rate value, and I even talk about things from each point of view, below, average, and above. On Monday I will even explore each draft and see where each type of player fits in best.
I understand. I appreciate your content and look forward to the next drop. I've played 3 sealed drafts and have gotten exactly 0 wins. The cards drafted in sealed just seem to be so much more scattered than in premier. I found it very hard to make a viable deck. Like I said I enjoy your content and this is not intended to be contentious, just sharing my personal experiences.
Arena just scams us out of our money. Most of your money goes towards the cosmetics. What a waste...it’s all virtual...just give us more damn cards or chances to play more limited events...
Agreed. I am not a fan of cosmetics. I actually did a mastery pass break down and we were able to see that almost 50% of the vale was is cosmetics! 0.o
Limited is amazing ON PAPER. However it is extremely difficult to win even a single game, let alone win enough games to get some value out of it. Streamers are all screeching about how amazing the limited is, it is not. You are going to waste your resources for little to no gain. Dont fall for it. If you are a new player or a f2p player: Buy packs, get your wildcards sorted, build whatever you wish to play with.
@@MTGNerdGirl No your math is accurate. The problem is math doesnt take into account the human factor. It is great if you could win 7 games in all your limited events but unfortunately thats not the reality. The reality for a new player is the fact that they will be winning 1 or 2 games each time they take part in them and thats me being generous. I have entered 5 limited events so far and i only won 1 game, and thats because my opponent got disconnected. And im not even a new player. Assuming they spent 5k gold for a quick draft event, they can instead open 5 packs and get that wild card progression rather than getting 1 or 2 mediocre rares and 1 pack from the draft. If you apply this theory to math, it essentially means that a quick draft event equals roughly 3 packs while you can get 5 packs with the same money. It is a gamble at the end of the day.
@@asdasvedas1 based on what you calculate my math was wrong. Although is video is about sealed... and collection building. So I'm not really sure how its wrong.
@@MTGNerdGirl Well, no. But most players probably wont be winning a single game, which means all they gain is the 35 extra commons, but lose out on wildcards.
@@MTGNerdGirl No, not the math. I think the value is there. But: Standard Constructed players usually need several playsets of exact cards (mostly rares) in a timely manner. Commons and uncommons can usually be neglected. These players do not build a collection either, but are satisfied with their highly optimized deck. After all, Magic cards are playing cards and not postage stamps. In the draft vs pack discussion I also noticed that wildcards are mostly undervalued by many Limited players, as they argue with quantity (filling the collection) instead of quality (putting together a strong Standard deck). In addition, many Draft Rares are also bulk and partly unplayable in Constructed. You also have to do Rare Picking so that the bill works out (which may not be optimal for building an optimal Limited deck).
@@LarsIsReal the math says "MOST PEOPLE" can't all go 0 wins. The avg player is 3-3 right. Even the worst players get a win or two. And 1/2 the rewards are in pack form thay still award wildcards. If the math is right at 0 wins I dont see the argument here.

That is all talked about at the end of the video! :)
Not to sound repetitive, but thank you for making this vid. I wish i would have realized this sooner. Also excited to watch you and CGB continue to play matches together.. Big fan of both of you!!
Glad you enjoyed it! There is a better one about draft coming out tomorrow!
3:40 what are GPs!?! Kreygasm
I was listening to the video while working and you saying "2000 gems refund" by mistake stopped me dead in my tracks haha
I recorded this after a 12 hour stream. I'm honestly not sure how I made sentences. I'm glad it was the only error. I learned to put the overlay words up this time (not sure if you noticed it)! So it was a good moment to learn to edit better!
I immediately tabbed in to rewind and re-listen and noticed the text so it was all good. Thank you abd cheers for your hard work!
in tested this draft companion now on kaldheim draft and im not to impressed. when im drafting normally it doesnt tell me to much, helps a bit to get a more flat mana curve, cause i sometimes dont have the overview about that and give a more or less usefull Deck build advice, but nothing i would pay 8 Dollar per month for. then tested the deck builder with the intention of Simulation being totally new to drafting, just picking always the card with the highest Rating. Result was a white green aggro deck with 1 good combat trick, 2 flying creatures, tons of manafix and a skemfar (lol). the deck builder cutted out every card that wasnt green or white, even after he drafted 4 elves that make you a mana of your choice and a pike axexD oh and for the deck builder the 5th of a kind was worth more, then a card you dont have already 4 times xD
the deck went loss, win, loss in the first three quickdraft rounds, and the one win was because on the lowest draft level my enemy was to stupid to count right lol
spiced up the deck after that with some red and black splashes, and won 3 more rounds, cause with the deck builder deck i would have lost 0:3 or 1:3 in a quickdraft, while having ok packs.
so no guaranty for an ok deck for beginners and not so much of an plus for experienced drafter, that the price would be worth it. the card ratings are standard, there are tons of assistants who give you that overview and its free for a reason. the advanced rating is doing pretty weird stuff, like giving a giant plow a 34 point gold rating or rating down cards who could spice your deck up just to hold the mana curve perfectly flat and cut it at 4...
that often irritates and is pushing cards to a low rating who are the better pick if you dont stuck in this "pick 21 must be this, to flatten the holy curve! who cares that there are some much better picks, they dont have mana cost of 3!" algorythm.
tldr: the draft companion isnt better then other draft companions who are for free and the money option gives you nothing that would be worth this price.
I only recommend the free side if it. I've never used the paid version. And you mention its not good for experience drafters. If thats the case you are not the target audience for this video. Really the ratings guide is all I wanted to share. I hate paid apps! Lol
Sounds like the best way for a casual, mostly free play player is to do a little bit of everything.
2000 gems is A LOT for a casual mostly F2P player. That player needs to keep gems for the mastery pass. Of course, if the casual player turns all of their gold into gems by drafting (and have a good win rate) they can afford it.
Sealed or quick draft? I average 2 wins if I'm being generous
I also have 2 draft tokens
Hey! This is the sealed video. Check out the draft one that goes over the ev for all players and drafts. Also with tokens there is not reason to enter lower!
@@MTGNerdGirl oh, I must have missed it! I thought the comparison video didnt have sealed in it. Thanks for the response!
Got my first 7 win in sealed yesterday with Silverquill and Mascot Exhibition 😁
Nice!! Thats great to hear.
Sealed you don't contribute to the wildcard wheel tho
Did you watch the video?
I needed this series thank you. Just downloaded arena on mobile
Great! More to come very week.
Is that a Corgi in the background?
It is! That is my player token created by coolstuff. My dogs name is hamlet. Check out the Instagram if youd like photos.
Im done collecting. Played 20+ sealed @51% win rate
Damn found this a day too late, used my free token in the premiere draft thinking it would be better now i know how wrong i was
Most tokens are for draft OR sealed. So I doubt you make a mistake.
@@MTGNerdGirl Oh? Oooooh, nice that's reassuring, guess I'll spend my gems on sealed instead of buying packs then, thanks for the help
Todays video has some really good insights on draft for building collections too! Check it out. Might be better for you.
short and useful information, thanks!
I figured the same, so I played a sealed yesterday. and went 0-3. Girl, I suck!
We all go 0-3 sometimes! And you'll get better! I have some videos coming out soon to help!!

You are our favourite "not a youtuber" 🌹
So now you tell me!! LOL jK I been trying to grind the events to get my collection up
I love sealed limited. Miss it.
Interesting video. Thanks.
Sealed feels so luck dependent. Get bombs = win. Get chaff = frustration.
Im glad i found your channel :)
Looking up the next video, this was eye-opening
I'm so glad it was helpful!!
Was my math wrong?
I don’t think you should do this unless you’re REALLY good at limited. Like, above 55% win rate good.
I go 0-3 almost every time in Premier draft. But sealed I got 3-5 every time.
can you tell me where my math is wrong for 1, 2 and 3 wins?
@@MTGNerdGirl I'm not saying your math is wrong, I'm just saying that you gotta be good at limited to get 2,000 gems for sealed, let alone do well. The somewhat marginal return of investment in limited in general just makes me unsure, that's all. In no way did I mean any rudeness, just sharing my opinion
Limited isnt great value. But when compared to just buying packs (the idea behind the video) it is always better. :) thats all I'm saying. It is expensive. But so is buying packs!
@@MTGNerdGirl Yeah. MTGA needs a better economy. I watched your video again and I'm convinced now. :) Thanks!
This is bad advice for anyone but new players just fyi. You need to maintain a better than average win rate to make the value work better than packs for rares.
Where was my math wrong? I would be happy to make a new video if I made an effort somewhere.
2-3 wins is not that easy to get in draft.
@@thedudeabides7737 the planned "how I build a sealed pool might be good videos for you too! I'm excited.

Then you should just buy packs!

Best draft guide ever - fast and simple: ua-cam.com/video/tz6jxyBMw7Y/v-deo.html
Can someone do a tldr explanation please
If you're going to spend gems, spend them on draft/sealed packs that have more cards in them per pack.
Was my math wrong somewhere?
Nice
I'll keep buying packs.
Limited isn't for everyone. But thank you for checking out this video anyway!
Don't fall for it. All these hardcore limited Players want to lure you in so that you can be farmed, hahaha ;-)
Did I do the math wrong?
