The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Diana Ross And The Supremes Are Beautiful
Love Mary's expressions at 0:22 , 3:11 , 3:48 and 4:07 .They're just perfect. You would have thought she was singing lead! Bursting with excitement! We miss her!
Yes ! She her facial expressions were adorable. Love her .
Mary never allowed herself to be completely overshadowed, and always did due diligence to make the Supremes excellent!
That was Cindy who made the gestures...
@@WPM_in_ATL it was Mary all the way
@@WPM_in_ATL Cindy was much more of A Soft cute Dancers on Stage that what she was good at but Mary had All talent if you look at it
Mary's beautiful soft and smokey voice comes out so beautifully on "Say It Isn't So" 2:22! Just love hearing Mary's and Cindy's vocals so distinctly.
Can we stop say who is the most gorgeous or who is better and just appreciate 3 beautiful women that made their mark in history.
The ORIGINAL three.
Probably not because people usually have their favorites in a group

Missing the Iconic, Talented, and Beautiful Ms. Mary Wilson💔💞 Love you always Ms. Mary.
Fantastic Diana Ross !
I think that The Supremes wore the most fabulous gowns by far, way ahead of their time.
Lovely Mary Wilson....nothing else to say.
Diana, Mary, Cindy and Ethel on the same stage. No other time than the sixties could this happen.
Diana’s voice sounds even more old fashioned here than it’s date. She has some beautiful delicate moments that remind me of 1930s movie stars.
I've often thought that she reminded me of the film stars of the 30s....
I love that Mary Wilson was also singing
That finishing note that Mary had at the end flawless
It's been a month and feels like Mary still here but sadly she is not
As long as there are clips like this around, Mary will never be gone.
😓
I know Mary And Flo Died 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Mary and Flo were the best. I never liked Cindy. She was boring.
Cindy was ok
I’ve always thought that moment at 4:00 where they all stare at Ethel M. in awe as she walks away is pretty cool! Almost like they were showing great respect for a musical artist who came before them.
I agree. I appreciate the humbleness and respect displayed toward the elder, experienced Ethel Merman by a mega famous, world class female group The Supremes.
This is so excellent!! The Supremes achieved true harmony with this number.
Thank you. I've always loved both Ethel, and the Supremes, and I had never heard of them together on Ed's show, until now.
Seeing them both made me smile, dope performance!
I can remember getting so excited when the Motown acts were going to be on Ed Sullivan...especially The Supremes! They were always a class act no matter the lineup (Mary, Flo, Diana, Cindy, Jean, Linda, Scherrie or Suzaye).
We love and miss you Mary and Flo!
Now, THIS was music!!!!!!!
My favorite!! How can you not love this. The supremes were wonderful 💜❤️
2:22 Mary & Cindy looked so beautiful!
Flo was the SOUL of the group..when Flo was wrongly fired we still had Mary for the SOUL but Diana was horrible.
@@Dion_Mustard I agree. Mary kept the group sounding at least OK. Without her it would sound terrible
Ridiculous. @@LoveTheKay
How Ed announces them as Diana Ross and HER Supremes is just funny
You must love him 😅
Ed certainly loved them...they were on the show more times than any other musical act.
@@WPM_in_ATL yes he loved them
He announced them at least twice as "...and now ... THE GIRLS here..."
What he actually said was "the supreme Diana Ross and her Supremes".
Mary really shines here.
Ed Sullivan always allowed her to do so on the non-Motown segments he produced.
At this point in time, I don't understand this world, but I find myself tearing up as I watch this. This is beautiful.
Everything thisbvideo represents is gone. I feel sad and teary too! Class is gone, evil satanic tainted music, clean beautiful. And dressed like ladies not whores. I think we're sad for whats missing and gone. Sorry getting late please pardon my ramblings but you get the jest, right?
I believe had the Supremes returned to this format, Florence wouldn’t have given Gordy reason to push her out.
And Mary holding her own with Ethel in the complicated counterpoint arrangement of “You’re Just In Love”.
Oh, how I miss my friend. 😢 I love you Mary. ❤️
Mary owned this performance !💯
oh, bullshit!
Wow, this made my Friday--this is one of Supremes Nation's "holy grail" of group Sullivan performances that, after all these years of bootlegged and grainy copies, we get finally to see in originally mastered print. And especially in memory of the late Supreme Mary Wilson, who always was "in the middle" and ended up getting the "last note," so to speak, giving their appearances that additional special visual spark. Along with beautiful Cindy here as well as the fabulous Diana. Thanks so much!
Mary ❤️
Did not have Ethel Merman and The Supremes sounding phenomenal together in my UA-cam algorithm bingo card today. Wow!
Goose bumps at the perfectly framed picture of three proud Black women and that big late 60's sound! Pure class and magic.
Beautiful….love their rendition of this medley…
1:39 Listen to THAT ORCHESTRA!
Ed Sullivan had the best instrumentalists on 60's live TV
That orchestra was fire!
Back when stars still dressed with class.
This is an amazing medley
They also sang with The Andrews Sisters, each trio singing the other's songs. Almost bizarre Merman singing with them with a famous song of hers. They also appeared with Garland in Texas at some point, though I don't know if a recording exists.
Prayers, cindy birdsong.🎉rip, mary and ethel. Diana will live.🎉
Mary was always the most gorgeous Supreme!
@@paulsmith2279 Yes. I never realized that from all the audio recordings. Not until UA-cam.
Agreed. Saw MW perform with the Detroit Symphony in April 2016. Mary was the real deal and should have led the group.
What a great show, beautiful music 🥂❤️✨ thank you UA-cam ✨
The segment of 3:06 "You're Just In Love" when Ethel Merman is simply MAGICAL, BRILLIANT, BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!
Been waiting for this one. They are just fantastic.
I always loved their matching gowns!
Diana always get criticized for hogging the spotlight, but its very clear here that she is sharing the spotlight with three wonderful singers and they all seem to be enjoying themselves
Putting on a smile doesn’t mean enjoying yourself. They could be covering it up. Also, she admitted to hogging the spotlight. She regreats it though
@@LoveTheKay I think Mary and Diana look genuinely happy here.
@@LoveTheKay I never read or heard of Diana admitting that she hogged the spotlight and that she regretted it. Please tell where you read or heard her say this.
I know right! The lead singer hogging the spotlight. That's just crazy. The supreme Diana Ross and her supremes.
@@jackjules7552 Watch the videos here on YT and you will clearly see her hogging the spotlight. When it was Flo and Mary, they were pushed into the background. When Cindy came into the act, they were not pushed into the background as much as with Flo and Mary. Don't know what the reason was for that.
THIS IS WHEN TV WAS GREAT! 1960s/1970s/1980s THE BEST! LOVE THE SEGMENT OF THE SONG WHEN ETHEL MERMAN COMES IN AND SINGS WITH THEM.
I’ve been waiting for this one!!
THATS ENTERTAINMENT! THATS TALENT! I would rather listen to 1960s-1970s-1980s music-songs.
Real singers ❤️
BRAVO!!!
Many thanks for sharing this clip, super harmonies.
This is wonderful! Close harmonies where we get to hear ALL of the girls sing and then to top it all in comes Ethel Merman and her Broadway foghorn.
Look at how elegant and graceful women were in those days! My aunts grew up with so much grace, style and beauty. My God the earth was full of beautiful Goddesses, black, white, Asian, Spanish decent don’t matter the race!
I keep coming back to this clip. It's one time where Merman had a softer delivery, more like her young self. Nice combo with The Supremes.
The supreme DIANA ROSS (and HER Supremes) - SO TRUE ED
stunning ;)
YES!!!!!!!!
When Mary and Cindy sing “Remember” I just can’t get over it ❤️
yeah this one of the rare occasions where Mary and Cindy got to shine.
@@1talldaddy Yes, and you said it..."rare."
I’m still holding out for the Fats Waller Medley.
Me tooooo 😂
Everyone waiting that upload. I have it. But it’s not of good quality.
It’s on UA-cam now on the Ed Sullivan page
Those gals could sing the phone book and be perfectly successful!
I wonder if anyone's actually ever sang a phonebook. That would be neat to see :))
Let us marvel at the BEAUTIFUL video the British Marconi Mark VII color cameras made at CBS Studio 50 (Ed Sullivan Theater). The first set of Norelco (Philips) PC-60 color cameras did not make the grade at that location due to its proximity to the subway system.
This is another extension of Diana Ross's versatility, and why the supremes were able to do it all well! Those other girls like Gladys knight and so forth at Motown could not sing those type of songs like that. Ross could sensibly add soul without changing the interpretation of the music.
Glady's is pissed till this day because she wasn't chosen.
I don't recall anyone at Motown being given the same opportunities. Believe me, Gladys knew how to entertain an audience. In fact Ross had Gladys Knight and Pips kicked off a tour as DRATS opening act because they were too dynamic. Know your history.
Supremes and Ethel Merman together...a gay boomers dream come true.
True
Nice for a change that the other girls aren’t shoved 30 feet back and they’re all actually singing together, loud and clear.
Great point!
Exaggerate much? The name of this group was Diana Ross & The Supremes. In hindsight Berry Gordy should have Diana go solo in 67 instead of the name change.
To be fair - and I know you are exaggerating - but that never really happened on the 'show tune' numbers on Ed Sullivan - Mary/Cindy/Flo were more involved, and were given more to do on those, in comparison to the hit-of-the-week number. They worked better as a group on the show tune numbers. My God - those harmonies are fantastic. They were tighter in the Mary and Cindy era compered to the Mary and Flo era.
@@pullformore
Flo never liked doing the show tunes and I agree, they seem to be very good at doing the show tunes compared to doing their #1 singles..
@@anthonyyusef5897 Why in 1967? What so great about going solo when you are the lead singer of the number one group in the world? Were the fans in a hurry for Ross to go solo?
This is just wonderful. Thanks
Please uoload the cole porter medley and the gershwin medley by CONNIE FRANCIS. Brilliant medleys by a brilliant artist.
Wow! Connie Francis × Cole Porter= Heaven.
Signore e Signori Diana Ross. Tutto il resto è acqua fresca.
He kissed her hand...Diana had the men sprung. She is so captivating. Cindy and Mary were beautiful. I wonder what Patti LaBelle must think when she saw Cindy on the biggest stage in the world.
0:44 to 0:55 sounds so nice
I would like to have heard this medley with a Funk Brothers arrangement.
❤️❤️
Wow, ironically its elevating these rather mundane songs that showcase their tremendous sophisticated talent as much or more than their much better known Motown international smash hits. And yes they all were exceptionally good looking even or rather especially by today's standards.
I wouldn't say these were mundane songs...just the opposite. The medley doesn't allow much time for depth. "What'll I Do" is a pensive, romantic song that defined the 20s. Listen to other, complete versions.
I remember this show....
So I guess they're done with putting up Supremes performances?. Still so much more to see!
Wow
All beautiful black women from Detroit
Ethel?
Actually, Cindy is from the New Jersey/Philly area.
Sing 🎤 girls 👩🏽🦱👧❤️ sing 🎤👭💃👀that sounds good 👌

They sing Berlin really well. Did they ever include standards on their albums or did they ever sing standards in concert with their own repertoire?
They released a couple of albums of standards or show tunes--Sing Rodgers and Hart and Funny Girl. And a few standards are included on the I Hear a Symphony album. Live, about half their set list was devoted to show tunes, standards and covers, while some of their biggest hits were confined to a rushed medley.
@@charcasc7462 Thank you. I always liked The Supremes but the quality of the standards really stands out against the Holland-Dozier-Holland material.
I highly recommend their collection of songs by Rodgers and Hart. Their version of "Falling in Love With Love" is unsurpassed.
@@jamesryan6008Thanks.
Absaloot WOW
4:15 to the end! That orchestra rocked it....and that bug full 60s sound....seemed to encapsulate the whole decade. JFK should have been President but sadly wasnt....whatba decade!
"That bug full 60s sound"...???
THE MORE I watch The Supremes performances from decades ago in all their exquisite elegance and glamour, the more DISGUSTED I am by TODAY'S female performers and their filthy and vulgar presentations.
The question is why the younger generation support and admire today's female performers and their filthy and vulgar presentations.
During the Irvin Berlin medley it SEEMS I can only hear Diana (who actually sang live) and Mary's voice (which I know was pre recorded) but I don't believe I hear Cindy's voice AT ALL, am I wrong here?
I just noticed that Mary and Diana looked like they were singing but I noticed that Cindy didn't know the words in some places during their performance.

Not to the stir the pot or pit woman against woman because I’m not about that life *BUT* it’s just funny to me how Ed Sullivan introduced them as Diana Ross & HER Supremes and when they sing as a whole group, the most prominent voice……is Mary’s 😂😂😂😂😂
I think it was just off-the-cuff.
@@hudsony777 I agree. I believe he was having another one of those lapses. On one show, he introduced them as "the girls". That was just Ed.

The Ed Sullivan Show
Diana Ross and her Supremes
Pay attention. Cindy's voice is not on this. She's lip syncing. This is a duet between Diana and Mary. Same with the Fats Waller medley. Mary and Florence made Diana sound good.
Was the dream girls play based on a true story about them?
Did Cindy ever sing out?
Over Miss Ross's dead body!
@@jackjules7552 Ever means before during and after Ross. Have you ever heard her produce a full and resonant tone?
@@TruthSerum101 Cindy got a huge write up in the New York Times on Saturday...two full pages and many pictures about her career and currently not so good personal life. I think Cindy did her job well.
@@jackjules7552 She certainly looked the part. She was very pretty and had a lovely smile.
Birdsong almost completely inaudible here. She's like a wisp added to Mary's voice. I've always wondered why she's so turned down. She and Mary sound much more together and up front on the Fats Waller medley. You can hear Wilson harmonizing at the very end but where is Cindy's voice? Strange.
UGH! rather hear an old medley than Irving music. And I like Irving berlin and i used to like the Supremes until Flo left.
I'm not a fan after Flo left either. Thats the sound i liked. I dont like the sound with Mary and Cindy in that back. The only reason I check out clips without Flo is because they became really glamorous then and I like to see what they were wearing.
3:05 to 3:23 ./
You guys really need to stop it with the toxic nonsense. It's ridiculous.
Agreed. They were all beautiful and all talented.
of course ethel was made for the stage...
Dont think Cindy sang at all lol. This was definitely a lip synched performance yet Mary sounds terrific. They all look great.
RIP FLORENCE BALLARD-founder of The Supremes.
It’s likely that Cindy sang here, just lower than Mary. Actually, Mary’s voice was most prominent on many of their performances. Their performance of “My World is Empty Without You” on this same show a couple years before is basically all Mary on backgrounds (and that was when Flo was still in the group). Same with the song “Where Did Our Love Go”. All you really hear is Mary on those vocals.
She's there, just really soft. On the Fats Waller medley you can hear more of her with Mary.
Why in the world would they lip synch? It does not make sense that they would lip sync when the Ed Sullivan was equipped with the facility to support live singing including a live orchestra.
Since Cindy's voice was softer than Mary's, they really should have positioned her closer to the microphone, or pulled Mary back. Some of the recordings just sound like a duet of Diana and Mary.
And we went from this to twerking and trash. Go figure
The Supreme were doing such a great job...without her!!!
LOL
I don't know it's just me or Diana looks pretty high she wouldn't Can intoxicated over there I mean I don't know how was back in the sixties I bet they be rolling up them joints and light up that good old Kush to get them you know in the mood or performing😂😂🤣

Did ED just say (" Diana Ross & her Supremes") that SUCKS!!!!
Ed was known for being a little skatter-brained at times. Remember the time he introduced them as "The girls?"
I hated this era of the supremes. Berry Gordy lost his mind trying too hard to get them to be accepted by white America. It's classy but a little too grandma ish
My opinion is that it was genius of Berry Gordy to broaden the appeal of this dynamic group. From the beginning of their success, they had always included 'standards' and 'Broadway tunes' in their act. Doing so allowed them perform in the most prestigious clubs and venues in the world. It also allowed them to also expose their hits to 'white' America. To us, the Supremes were for our entertainment; however, to Berry Gordy and Motown, they were major money makers and at the end of the day, there ain't nothing wrong with that. As someone who grew up in this era, I am grateful that I was exposed to this 'grandma' music as performed by the Supremes. It broaden my appreciation of all types of music.
If they had done what you wanted they would have been just a soul group instead of versatile global icons...
@Maatization ok sure.... baby love and stop in the name of love and all the other hits whent to #1 all over the word. Those albums sold. That was the music that made them global. Not this.
@@Cloudetower But it was this that made Diana a showbiz legend who could sing anything. She won an Tony award for a show she had on Broadway...and went on to movies LSTB singing jazz. She left the group but was still the lead singer in the greatest american group of all time with 12 number one hits.
