Writing your books is the most important thing. We’ve already spoken about writing habits, motivations, and other things to help you get started. We’ve also spoken about whether or not to be a plotter or a pantsr. These are all things you need to decide and get sorted prior to writing. However, once you decide you’re going to write your book, you need to work out where your book is going to go, especially if you’re a plotter. Below is a number of tools that may help you in working out what you want your story to be. If you read and listen to my previous posts, then you’ll already have a tagline hopefully. This is building upon that. Once you’ve got your tagline then after that there are different types of structures. The traditional one is called the three act structure. Nowadays, however, there is the 4 act structure, the five act structure, and probably many other structures. Randy uses the snowflake method which is also very useful. I myself use a very strange mixture of the three act structure and the snowflake method. You need to know about your characters. You need to know who they are and what they want. You need to know their internal motivation and external motivations. These are very important. You need to know what is pushing your characters, but you also need to know what’s holding them back, what sort of resistance is stopping them? Do they have an internal resistance? Do they have an external resistance? Do they have both? This is all vital to your character. You also need plenty of background on your character as this sets the scene on who and what they are. Once you’ve got all your characters information and you’ve got your one sentence tagline then you can get on with the story itself. The story itself will be quite interesting. Your characters get put into situations and based on who and what they are they then take courses of actions. If you’ve built this up properly you’ll probably find that your characters will make decisions that may even surprise you. The structure of the story though needs to be developed. Traditionally, there is the three act structure. I have found however by reading many, many stories that it generally gets broken down further than this and this is what I do for my stories. I have the three acts then within each three act I have three sections Within each of those sections. I have another three parts within those sections. This gives me a total of three acts, nine sections and 27 parts to break my stories down into. I can still break it down further if I want. I can break it down into scenes And then down into beats. Each section may be comprised of a scene or two. Each scene may have three or possibly four beats in it. Again Randy Jamison does a very good book on scene and beats that I would highly recommend. I would also recommend the book a hero with 1000 faces. There are many different types of resources out there and I would suggest going onto Audible and Finding books on structure, and plot. Either way the way you write your books will be down to you. As I’ve said many times experiment. Test to see what is best for you. Read as many books as you can on structure, plot, outline, anything like that you can. The more knowledge you have the more you can test things out and see what works for you. I have taken aspects of multiple different styles of plotting and combine them into my own style which I am still developing. Test, test, and test again. experiment to see what’s best for you and I hope you find out. I hope this has helped take care and carry on reading fellow book lovers.
