If you tied the lure on the opposite end the skirts would lie a bit further away from the mainline giving it a branch like effect and not lying flat against it when retrieved. The same can be achieved if you feed the skirt snoods from the opposite end of the lure when starting off. This also helps during the cast as the snoods lie streamlined against the mainline.
