    --------------------------
Although more renowned as a 90s dance/electronica pop act, with hits like 'Sweet Harmony', 'Hello', and 'The Sun Rising', The Beloved began in the mid 80s as a 4-piece guitar-based band. Two John Peel Sessions in 1985 were followed by 4 independent singles on the now-defunct Flim Flam label. Their debut album "Where It Is" was a compilation of these initially released as a vinyl LP in October 1987.
Step forward to 2019. All the audio has been remastered from the original analogue tapes, by John Davis at Metropolis Studios, and is to be reissued with a second disc containing previously unreleased demo tracks.
At the time the material was recorded, the band comprised: Jon Marsh (Vocals/Keyboards), Steve Waddington (Guitars), Tim Havard (Bass) & Guy Gausden (Drums); sonically similar to peers on NME’s seminal C86 compilation. The first 3 singles were produced by New Order's studio engineer Michael Johnson, 'Forever Dancing' by the band themselves.

Loved this era of The Beloved as well as the later, acid / balearic flavoured stuff. Definitely a Hooky type thing going on with the bass, and it's even a six string Shergold by the looks of it!

So do I. Definite Joy Division/early New Order feel to their older songs.

@@ljts7587The Smiths and New Order I’d say… with a bit of The Cure thrown in.

Not my favorite Beloved track but, they were not afraid to break free of genre and give new sounds a try.

Honestly, this shows no potential at all. I would not have signed the band on the strength of this, but what a mistake that would have been as this band went on to become possibly the most underrated (and best) bands of all time. I wish they would get back together and tour. Got everything they did, apart from these demo songs mentioned in the info section, but i will get that remastered album when it comes out.

Honestly your opinion is pretty shite and its a blessing you weren't in charge of a record company. This era of the beloved had so much potential and proof that they could have swung it out with their bigger contemporaries (ie The Smiths or New Order) For a while this era of the band were relegated to cult status along with other bands that should have been just as big (The Sound, The Chameleons, Comsat Angels, Lowlife etc) its only now some form of recognition is finally being relegated to them

This is The Beloved in an earlier period, this music bears no resemblance to what they went on to become, which was an electronic dance based band. Like you said, this is more like The Manchester sound of The Smiths. If you are an A&R man, you don't want to sign the new Smiths, you want to sign a band with a unique sound ideally. That is what they became, this is just them developing that sound. I wasn't being funny fractured/image, just being honest. I call a spade a spade, a big mistake of mine, but i am a massive Beloved fan, as i've never heard these songs before it's hard for me to see how you became The Beloved from this Manc sounding beginning. What was the crossover in your opinion? Did a new band member come in who added a different slant to the music or what?

I like The Beloved's earlier stuff much more than their electronic dance era or The Smiths, I guess I'm not alone. Actually, as for the uniqueness of sound, you don't want to sign the new Pet Shop Boys or whatever either, it's rather subjective

I don't think they sounded anything like the PSBs, they had their own sound. PSBs are electronic pop, whereas the Beloved were one of the first real dance bands (Balearic style). Sweet Harmony and a few others could have been classed as electronic pop, but overall they had an Ibizan sound imo.
