Im gonna have a bash at my bilge next weekend (weather permitting) thanks for making this vlog 👍
Jobs like that are difficult and time consuming but they carry along a certain feeling of accomplishment when they are finally done. Nonetheless, I have never seen someone describe such a mundane, if necessary, task with such enthusiasm. Wonderful.
Rust inhibitor is basically phosphoric acid. It converts the iron oxide in to iron phosphate and because iron phosphate is inert it prevents oxygen from getting to the re-actable metal beneath and prevents further oxidation of the metal. That is why a certain amount of rust is preferable when using this product.
interesting
loved the video--a lot of work, and a lot of patience doing it. i swear by my shop vac at home--it is a small one, and i drilled out the bottom and put casters on it. even use it to vacuum the house--hardwood floors. back in the days when we had fireplaces used to vacuum that out--but you might want to double filter--a bag over the filter--and it really does a terrific job. just dont do that with hot coals. incidentally--love the way you look on the tiller.
I work exclusively painting multiple Bilges on an aircraft carrier, namely the CVN-73
Our process is different, we do SSPC1, 2, 3, AND 11. SSPC11 suits your application since the bilge is a critical area!
So essentially we go done down to bare metal.
After that, the surface must have a surface profile of at least 1 mil. You either blast it, sandpaper it, or needle gun.
If the metal is smooth and polished, the paint will peel off, the surface profile allows the paint to grab into the peaks and valleys of the metal surface.
Next we apply an Epoxy primer and top coat, good Epoxy paint is so durable it might outlast the boat itself.
When I power tooled 25 year old bilge paint, the metal underneath was rust free IF the surface prep was done correctly. Also Epoxy paint is TOUGH AS HELL.
Lastly you need to be keenly aware of conductivity, which is basically how much salts are on your steel.
High conductivity is disastrous because it will rust the steel from underneath or cause the coating to delaminate in sheets.
Lastly a good rust converter is kleen strip prep n etch, also known as phosphoric acid.
When using phosphoric wash it away immediately after the rust is converted
Also on when applying paints or coatings, you need to feather the edges of chipped paint showing bare metal or paint that transitions from one location to the next.
Feathering your paint allows for a smooth bond between the new and old coatings. If the paint is not feathered, that area will be very prone to chipping, cracking and flaking.
Essentially you want to see the different layers of Coatings
Imagine it like this
s19525.pcdn.co/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Feather-Edge.jpg
However the feathered edges do not have to be that far apart/vast. If you got 2 mm of separation between paint and primer you're fine.
Hope this useless information helps
thanks for this!
We enjoy these 'how to' videos very much
The cable that stopped working we call a Bowden type. It has a single strand single hardened wire core.
How do you suppose that that bridge in Viet Nam is still standing while hull plating seems to disintegrate (exfoliate) practically before our eyes? One reason is that the bridge is largely made from iron, while the plating is steel. Boat castings made from iron last forever. The separation you're seeing is rolled steel plate coming apart like a croissant. No worries, it's normal.
Jasmin, you already know how particular i am about how things like this are done. For what it's worth, Top Marks Throughout. You did a beautiful job.
Thank you marty high praise coming from you! I have seen iron boats but I hear they crack instead of denting in the case of collision?
@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure yes they're not very elastic or forgiving like plate is
Not to mention castings can have internal stress (turmoil lol)
Another well done job!
thank you jeff!
As usual, wonderful video, very informative. Look forward to hearing and seeing more videos from you, peace
Thanks joey I'm working on it!
Thank joey I'm working on a few actually!
think you did a excellent job, keep up the great videos
wow, good job !drying a boat with air dryer such a beautiful idea ;)
:)
Looks great. There's no better feeling when a jobs done.
So true!
Nice to see you again girl and a great job you have done too. All the best
You guys are having too much fun! Glad the sun is in your favor!
Yes it was lush weather for this week
I think you have done a grand job.
Thank You for sharing this with me
Great job! Very well thought out.
thank you doc
Subscribed and liked. I really like your enthusiasm for telling the story about such a misarible job. Good luck on your future travels along the canal.
I difficult job well done. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Tony :)
In future, when wire brushing your bilge with your drill, I suggest using ear plugs or ear protectors to reduce the noise on your ears.
Great job, interesting video!
what?
You’ve done a brilliant job. You seem to have very good access to the engine, I think I would struggle a bit in mine. I have a hot air gun, it looks a bit like a hair drier, but is much hotter. So, it dries out moisture much quicker. I know, I have a few little spots of rust in my bilge and will try and address them before they get too bad. Thanks for sharing your experience, it will spur me on to do mine!
it was a struggle!!! its so dark in the bilge its hard to show everything !
Great job well done. More vlogs more often please
I'm doing my best but I'm not going to put out bad ones!
great job people
Just thought I'd ask when you last changed the cam belt of your engine.. I think the belt should be changed at 2500 engine hours. Or every 7 years whichever is sooner Some engines can get seriously damaged if it snaps.. not a huge job to do but worth it. Looks good in there now. If you could put the paving slabs on some little blocks of hard rubber or plastic to keep them off the base plate that would help keep the floor dry and stop moisture getting trapped between the two. Perhaps chop and old plastic chopping boards up..
it was done 3 years ago according to the receipt in the folder that came with the boat we are probably doing it this year just in case
We've got a mate called Bilge. 😀
Now that was a very helpful video. A good job done. It looks as you have a Lombardini LDW 1204 / FOCS Diesel engine. Snap! People frequently comment on how quiet it is. Others pull long faces about the cam belt. I had mine changed when I bought the boat despite being well under the service hours at the suggest of my surveyor. How do you get on with yours?
Great video again, Jasmin.
Do you think this was the first time that area was renovated in the boat's life?
no the boats quite old the survey would not have been good had this never been done befor!
Looks good! As this area is prone to rust, is it not best to leave a layer of oil in the bottom? - doesn't look pretty but should help with rust.....
LOVE YOUR BLOG , HAVING A LOOK TO SEE IF YOU HAVE ANY THING REGARDING BLACK ING UNDER THE BOAT ,
I do ua-cam.com/video/RD0EKRgbPXo/v-deo.html
Great stuff Jasmin - or is it Minnie Mouse ?
how is your expirence of youtube? liked the video of the islands :)
in what sense? glad you enjoyed the island videos
Great video jazmine! Love your energy! There is a way that we can buy your partner music, I leasing the guitar in many other videos and I love it. God bless you guys.
not yet hes working on a recording that I think is gonna be wonderful. he posts on here instagram.com/sebgday_guitar/
Do you both find it hard maintaining your narrowboat
its something you have to do, its hard at times yea
Hi, which degreasing product did you use please ?
Never use anything havey like the drill bit on week spot and boat will fill with water job for dry land ok Cary on
thank you , we actually saw someone go through their fule tank doing this same job. our bottom plate is 10mm thick and has been cared for well so we wherent too worried
Do you hire Seb out to do this work! ;)
no and if i did we would have to be a team or it would only be half done!
I've been wanting to do the same, but can't get in under my engine. You said you didn't move the engine, but it looks removed in the video. If not, how did you get in under your engine. Confused...
We didn't get the square directly under the engine we would have to remove it or at the very least the slabs below it but we didn't feel confident to do this without damaging the engine
@@ThisNarrowboatAdventure I see! Hmm... Perhaps that's not a bad idea. Thanks for the great update.
Someone's up early..
for the Americans (plus the cat wakes me!)
Please stop saying moist, horrible word and makes me feel a little uncomfortable. ;-P
Its accurate though
STOP with the SO !!!! pretentious in the extreme !
