@@BrutusTheAnimator I think the ideas is to depict everything as surreal. Like reality is barely holding together. He's seen past the veil so nothing feels quite real.
This scene blew us away when Animatrix came out. The two Spider-Verse movies released so far really represent the ethos of this scene but on a gargantuan scale. The animation style is action packed, becomes incredibly artistic and shows us some insane angles. These types of animations really represent what an animated comic book would look like. Can’t believe this short has been in my head for 20 years, it’s amazing.
One of the best scenes, in my opinion. The faith and the longing for escape with the...sadly...inevitable tragic reality of suicide... It is simultaneously a horrific, sad and tragic act, and yet, so beautiful, gripping and emotionally stunning. Also, especially for the time, it was particularly brave of the Wachowskis and animators to actually portray a story told like this. :(
You didn´t get the idea about the kid's ability with the skate, remember that the matrix its a system with a very large set of norms and rules that rules every human who its connected, the agents are programs who are ruled by this set of rules and norms of the system even though they have more speed and strengh that a regular human, a human with his mind can break this rules if they know that the matrix its not real (that's why trinity, neo and morpheus can make things like jumping very higher or can react more quickly than a normal human), the kid its the 1% of the population that they never asimilate the system as part of a real world and this 1% of the population (the city of Zion) will always feel that something is wrong with the reality, even some said that when they are dreaming its more real the reality itself (neo's said that in the matrix 1), so the kid its breaking the rules of the matrix by knowing and believing in Neo, Morpheus and Trinity, that's why even the agents can't put him down
Yeah I always thought the whole scene with Neo and the mirror was to break his sense of reality and have him die in the Matrix. If you already believe none of it is real, I think it's enough for Morpheus and the crew to scramble your signal.
So this is a really deep cut but essentially it’s explained later in an online matrix video game that kid like Morpheus were able to free themselves from the matrix without any intervention. The game takes place years after Morpheus death which is why he’s dead in the matrix 4 (terrible movie) but think of it like the train scene in inception “they can feel that they don’t belong” and are trying to return to a place they’ve never been.
I think it’s similar to the guy in race, when you’re near death, like in the verge of dying, the spike of adrenaline, etc., the programming can be shut down at just the right moment for the person plugged in, almost like a hard reset and the person can wake up in the real world. That’s what happened to both of them. That’s my interpretation, anyway.
I will never understand why the animation looks so “unique” until the kid is cornered into the bathroom, but overall the Animatrix is gotta be a classic, I own a dvd of it❗️
There are still vhs of this cartoon, but the fact that the animation from 20 years ago in some scenes looks like relatively recent AI creations makes this episode mind-blowing - as if in a “dream” everything looks so abstract until you wake up. I noticed this many years later when watching it again
If they catch this kid they would probably do to him what they did to Neo. Bug him or Intimidate him whatever, but Neo is more than capable of rescuing him.
I know the Wachowskis wrote this short and Shinichiro Watanabe only directed but I have to wonder if they wrote that falling scene with him in mind or just pure coincidence cause that's a big trademark of his

@@CoffeeManiac20Heck it’s probably thousands. The first couple Matrices took course over the span of human generations. So we can safely assume the first couple tries took a century. The machines admit his was a very long and frustrating process, which is why they were willing to listen to the oracles idea of fake choice. By doing so they still are allowing humans to break free of the Matrix and thus the path of the one was created to guide these eventualities back into submission via the one returning to the source. Then we gotta consider that each iteration of the one takes place well over the course of a human life time. At minimum it’s 70 years until the ones code is called again. Then there’s the other Zions that were destroyed. It probably takes some time for the machines to make sure every remnant of the previous Zion is wiped from existence. My guess is the Matrix is well over 1000 years old, and I think that’s being conservative.
