I am absolutely loving it. I was iffy about the art style when it was first revealed, but I can safely say this game is up there with 1-3. It's brilliant.
I’m pretty sure I won’t like it and it won’t grow too much on me. I am quite saddened by the artistic choice, to be honest. That said, there are some scenes which look better than others. I also don’t think it will ever match, let alone dethrone, any of the first three games (especially since they have novelty and nostalgia on their side, which are quite powerful, not to mention the fact that I played those as a child), but I’ll definitely be playing it. The monkeys demand it.

Generally speaking I do tend to put 2 just ahead of 1 though: that said, both have memorable moments. Hopefully, this new one has some as well.

Just finished my second play-through a year after my first and my opinion of the game hasn't changed much. There's a lot to love here ... but I do have one gripe with "Return". Funnily enough, it's neither the art-style nor the very simplistic UI - it's the general tone of the story. They really overdid the whole "bitter-sweetness" of it all, constantly portraying Guybrush as some old, past-his-prime geezer who's reminiscing about better days. For one thing: I'm pretty sure the game itself implies that Guybrush isn't even that old in this game. I think a ten-year-gap between this and "Secret" is mentioned so Guybrush would be, what? 28 in this one? For another: If I want to be reminded that everyone is getting older, including beloved, fictional and practically unkillable characters in silly adventure games, I can just stick with real life. For another, another (SPOILER ALERT for the ending): I was never a fan of this whole concept of "Guybrush's adventures are only taking place in his imagination and/or in a 17th century theme-park"... or something ... that they had introduced back in Monkey 2. It felt like a bit of a cop-out back in Monkey 2 and it feels even more like a cop-out in this game. Getting prepared for the huge let-down re "The Secret" by Elaine in this game only to then end up without even having confronted LeChuck and having to literally turn off the lights and close up shop in his own adventure not only felt unsatisfying to me, it also made Guybrush look a bit like a semi-senile fool who is getting humored by those around him - think Captain Picard in "All Good Things ..." . Perhaps I'm over-thinking this, and I still enjoyed the game immensely when it isn't laying on the "old man Guybrush"-stuff as thickly as it does at times - but it was/is a bit of a stain on an otherwise great game that captures much of the magic of the older titles without going full retro.
Another Pirate Point & Click Adventure Game i can recommend is CLEO - A PIRATE'S TALE it is inspired by Monkey Island and was one of the best game i played this Year. It is available for Pc and Switch.
I only played this series for the first time a few years ago, but I have immense nostalgia and love for it. It truly is something special. I can’t wait to get my hands on this installment when I have the time.
Jesus what's with the hate for this game? I'm playing through it and I absolutely love the artsyle and the charm it has. Then again I've never played previous entries so I don't know much about the series but I think this game is really charming

I think most of the time people fight here it’s because of this. Anyway, I really don’t like this style, it not evocative enough I find, and doesn’t convey the same atmosphere, and find it childish (and this while acknowledging that other styles were also childish). I like 3 though it, as with 4, seems childish to me, so I prefer 1 and 2 which to me look like a blend of realism with cartoons...in a way even more surreal than intentional surrealism. There are other things, but it would take a while to explain everything so I tried to dilute and present a summary. May I ask what you like about it, if you could provide a similarly succinct summary? I would be truly interested. Thanks.

So I also wholeheartedly love your reply now :) I might be bias as I like another game “knights and bikes” from the same art director. Also I myself is long time illustrator and game artist. So maybe I am a bit artsy fartsy destroyed so to speak. I like de backgrounds as they remind me a bit of Disney’s sleeping beauty. I love the stylization of it and how it’s made to look like painted in Guache retro style. Then dry texture in the shading making it look like guache or pastels on paper. Also I like the animation how this game move much more than before. Plants. Treees. Light etc. immerses me a lot more. Same with characters. I really love the throwback to 60s cartoons. And it has this story book feeling. (I always felt monkey island Had a sense of kid wonder and not fitting for realism) Animation of characters is ok. Not so special. But the face expressions is so great. That said I am not a super fan of the face style. There it’s for me too stylized where it looks like the nooses are staples on the characters. So here I would have like la a bit more traditional. I would have loved a mix of the look of MI2 and this on for the background (backgrounds of MI2 MI3 are very similar. Compared to MI1 that had those more old style píxeled “realistic style) So a bit less stylized and it would have been perfect for me. For fun I did a demake of the lookout background in MI1 pixel style. But it’s on my twitter and I can’t post links here unfortunately

Maybe once I play I'll get used to it but hard to care. One of those "wait for game pass games" which is sad because it's Monkey Island! There are so many talented artists, not just pixel artists, out there making games: Why this? Not just the worst looking MI game but one of the worst looking games I've seen.
My biggest issue is not exactly with the art style, but the presentation of it. I have fond memories of 90's point and click games, but I feel like this game is almost too fatihful and looks dated in how it plays out the visuals. Even something like the Professor Layton series on the DS looks much more interesting in how it presents the environment and story, imo. Then you have recent games like Disco Elysium that is oozing in style and atmosphere. I don't hate the newer style of it at all but wish it was pushed more. Maybe a bit more detail and things moving in the background or foreground to add depth. I hope this does well though. We need more point and click adventure games.

While thankfully this game came out on Playstation and Xbox platforms recently, it's really weird that it only came out on each platforms' "next gen" consoles and not on the PS4 and Xbox One as well, even though it came out on the Switch?! 😯😂🩲😀🤘

Just started playing this last night. I love the new animation style. A lot of Ren & Stimpy vibes on the close-ups.
