I was 8 yrs old, my grandma was looking after me on this day and she gave me
2s for a 1s e/w on the race. It was my first ever bet and I picked Nicholas Silver.
    Great memories thank you.

This was the first horse race I ever watched on TV at the age of 8! The combination of the race itself and the grey Nicolaus Silver got me hooked on the sport and I followed this horse thereafter, and I always looked out for grey racehorses in the future. Another famous grey I remember was Desert Orchid, in the 80s, this one winning a number of steeplechases but not the National.

My mum won on this horse when I was a few months old. She always bet on the greys, because the TV in those days was so bad that she couldn't tell the other horses apart!

Nicolaus Silver one of the very few greys to win at Aintree. Years later, came Desert Orchid and Cheltenham.

I have a set of shot glasses with national winners from 1958 to 1963. Nicolaus silver amongst them. A beauty.

I was just a kid when Nicolaus Silver won , well ridden by Bobby Beasley , but was on the next grey winner Neptune Collonges , given a superb ride by Darryl Jacob , he had quality Gold Cup form with Kauto Star and Denman. This was trainer Fred Rimell s second Grand National winner after E. S. B. he later also won with Gay Trip and Rag Trade .

This beautiful horse introduced me, as a 10 year old, to racing. I always picked the grey, followed Terry Biddlecombe and years later bought a 14 year old retired grey called Buchanan. The first horse I actually bet on years later. Ex hubby was furious when he won cos he was a gambler and had a crap day. Buchanan (Beau) lived to the ripe old age of 28

I remember this race so well - I was at school and used to pick horses from the newspaper every day and pretend to bet on them (but of course I couldn't). I think I chose Nicholas Silver as he was a grey. It was a great win!

I was the same Moira regarding the grey horses, and Nicolaus Silver was the first grey horse I had seen at the age of 8!

As a big fan of steeplechasing in Eastern Europe, this was especially interesting for me, due to the presence of the two Russian runners, Grifel and Reljef. Grifel was twice a winner of the Velka Pardubicka Steeplechase (1960 and 1961), won two other steeplechases and two hurdle races at Pardubice, and was a winner on the flat at least five times at Rostov-on-Don. Reljef finished 2nd to Grifel in the 1960 Velka Pardubicka and won at least two races on the flat at Moscow Hippodrome in 1957.

In 1961I choose Nicholas Sliver because the BBC commentator said that he had a goat as a stable companion. I thought any horse that shared it stall with a goat was a winner and then all the other horses fell down! Years later when I married an Irish GP in 1979 and I was surprised to see a picture of a grey horse on the piano. My husbands name was Heffernan and his uncle had bred him! Evidently my husband backed it £5 each way but the bookies wouldn't pay out on a technicality. My husband never got over it! Still I have a Grand National Winner in the family!

I was born in 1961,what a beautful horse nicholaus silver was, apparently a grey has never won the national since..50 years on in 2011 there is another grey in the national called silver by nature...perhaps the name silver will be lucky, let see what happens later..come on silver by nature!!!

My mum was 14 in 1961. My grandfather let her bet 2d on Nicholas Silver, she got 7 shillings and 6p back. She spent it all on sweets and pineapple cakes🍍😂👍

The grey's seem to have come 2nd rather a lot recently,
    Suny Bay 1997 & 1998
    Whats Up Boys 2002
    King Johns Castle 2008
King Johns Castle might be interesting if he gets his favoured soft going this year(2009)..

Probably retired now, he did run in the 2004 Grand National but fell or was brought down IIRC
