CORRECTION: I totally forgot to mention SplatZones in this video, which is the 3rd mode of Splatoon's ranked play. Thanks to all who pointed it out. This is why you don't write your script late at night after too much Turf War. Stay Fresh y'all.
pun intended?
Crimson Azure
What pun?
You compared Rainmaker to Capture the Flag, which I disagree with. Rainmaker is more like American football. When you successfully bring the Rainmaker to the enemy base, the inkling jumps up and lands a touchdown like what you'd see in 🏈.
NIKMOE Now a new rank mode has been added and looks so competitve
NIKMOE edit your own damn content
I hope it does become an Esport, just so I can tell my friends "Yes, Nintendo makes competitive shooters played in tournaments."
DJHammer222 it shouldn't. It only has 4 modes which is crap. You may disagree but it has a very low skill ceiling. And I know this doesn't have anything to do with escorts but the campaign is bad. This game is Overrated.
Overwatch only has like 2 modes tho.
Payload and Capture, and to be honest, they're really boring to watch.
BenTD do you know rainbow six siege? That game has only 3 game modes, and only one of them is competitive, yet it's a pretty popular fps esport. If that game can be an esport so can splatoon. And I also disagree with you on the skill ceiling of splatoon. If you have seen pro teams play splatoon, you know that they are by far more dominant than most other players. Plus there's lots of skill involved in how you enter every situation, so much so I can't list them all here.
SlothHawk Overwatch is a joke.
BenTD you do realize that cs:go, dota 2 and league of legends all only features 1 competitively played mode each right? And these are the top esports right now.
Man, I wish Nintendo would sponsor my Chess live streams.
+Chosen Scorpion That's the dream. Complete with hype commentary about my next level Bishop play.
Very interesting video, but if I'm not mistaken, you left out Splat Zones. There are four modes (three Ranked modes, one Regular mode), Turf War, Splat Zones, Tower Control and Rainmaker. Also, I believe you gave a little too much credence to Turf War. All Nintendo's tournaments have included Turf War, but practically every other tournament has opted only for the Ranked Battle modes.
Thank you for the correction! Splatzones is awesome, can't believe I forgot to include footage :\
Splatoon 1 was a eSport
NIKMOE Yeah no problem.

Some would argue that it's a good thing that Nintendo isn't trying to force its own esport organization into being. As you said, if the game is watchable, the eyeballs will come, sponsors will invest, and the scene will grow. This is not only how competitive smash came to be, but also counter-strike. Professional competitive counter-strike has been around since the early 2000s and didn't receive official backing from Valve until something like 2013. And even now, Valve doesn't even have its own CS events, it simply deems events hosted by independent event organizers to be "majors", and injects half the prize pool (which is criminally small considering the amount of money they make from the game).
Anyway, in my opinion, it's better for a scene to grow organically, rather than inflating a bubble on top of promises to all those involved based on something that may not truly be there (genuine interest of spectators).
you're goddamn right, this needs to be heard
I agree so much with this. Inflating the community doesn’t do anything, because if we fall flat we won’t get another chance. If we grow organically then we have the proof that people support the game grassroots enough that we can handle sponsors. Also splatoon kind of has the smash stigma associated with it. We aren’t a “real” shooter or we are a kids game when in actuality this game has more depth than any shooter i have played. The physics of this game allow for so many more playstyles to be present and it’s absolutely amazing. It’s the team shooter done right.
I honestly do think it could become an esport. There's a large enough skill gap so that the skilled players really shine, and there's lots of weapon variety, and almost every weapon is viable. I think the only thing that could make it difficult to become an esport is the fact that gear perks are randomized
*cough* Murch *cough*
RobinOW you have no idea how much grinding that is
Bob bobinson I assume someone who is entering the esports scene will grind to get that perfect gear.
RobinOW true
Don't you get chunks easily with salmon run?
Dude, you gotta use motion controls. You'll have much more fun and probably win much more.
So in Splatoon 1 I never gave the motion a chance. In Splatoon 2 I'm loving the motion controls, especially on the new Pro Controller. Some of this footage was literally from my first hour with the game before I knew what was up with the motion.
MOTION IS THE FUTURE. :P
Motion is better but im living proof sticks are somewhat useable
I can use sticks a lot better, I don't like moving my arms to move the gun, it's way to distracting trying to reset the camera every two seconds,
Morshu when you use motion controls you can still use the right joystick to look left and right, so the only movements would be tilting the controller up and down. It's pretty easy and doesn't really require too much focus
NIKMOE Ah, I see.
heres the real question can a party game made by nintendo from like 10 years ago and a few accidents make an esport?
* cough * *cough * melee *cough * but for real melee is hype probaly my favourite
E-sport
Melee, the greatest "accident" in gaming history. (PPMDkreygasm)
A simple FISH Great point.
Will it esport
Everything is perfect...your voice, the microfone quality, the video, the editing...i can go on and on....but.....i will just say perfect channel 100%
1:22 he uses stick controls when he's talking about competitive *Facepalm
Diesel_TaC Plays Games i feel ya
I'm that guy that always uses Ink Armour to support my team instead of selfishly waiting till I'm in a bad spot. At least even when you're splatted, Ink Armour spreads to your team for a few seconds. Seems like that special is always underappreciated, and I think it'd be a must for a competitive team.
They killed the bubbler... these bastards
DezThePuff It makes you visible in ink and bit slower so I actually don't like it when people use it too often.
Ocean Man it’s actually at the top of the meta right now
Its not selfish to use it when you nned it and it still supports yohr team if you use it when you need ig buts best used to create push
Haha same
I really like the video. A lot of thought was put into it, and I appreciate it. However, you left out Splat Zones, plus Turf War has its own problems with competitive viability. Plus, Rainmaker requires coordination as well, as you have to escort the objective into enemy territory (like in Tower Control), only that it makes it very tilted in the other team's favour. Finally, Splat Zones also does take competitive coordination, as you have to lock down the area as well as retake it when not in control.
The community is definitely there. You have organisations like InkTV, eSportsBrosTV, and EndGameTV organising tournaments as well as content creators like Fuzzy, DUDE, Power, Silver, and Penguitt. If NintendoVS promotes the Splatoon community, it would be amazing. However, the community is definitely there ^^
+Phlox thanks for watching. I will level with you. I almost included a bunch of the Splatoon 1 orgs and the competitive discord, but I wanted to keep it light for the average viewer.
I do regret forgetting about Splatzones when I recorded this, had a real facepalm moment.
Anyhow, see you online!
Haha, it's all good! I would have maybe put them in the description though, just in case people are interested in checking them out, or maybe even another video that delves deeper in the community? I'd definitely watch it :p
Yeah, that's def a facepalm moment lmao (I'd probably do the same thing as well tbh). Shame annotations don't exist anymore though to fix it @ UA-cam
See you online as well!
After seeing how fucking real Overwatch League is going to be, Splatoon 2 is definitely able to be an esport, no doubt. If weaboo anime girl/edge shooting game from Blizzard can become a real e-sports, then yes, Splatoon can. The only problem, is why can't i queue with friends? What happened to squad battles? Why do I have to be rank B- or higher? Why can't I always queue with other friends? Am I doing something wrong? If so please tell me how.
You can play private battles as far as I know, I don't have that many friends on my switch yet, so its hard for me to find out. As for the rank requirement, its to keep the crap out.
I agree. If overwatch, a game with a surprisingly low skill ceiling, only like 3 modes, no customization, and boring gameplay can be an esport, splatoon most surely can as well.
Well I mean, none of the girls in Overwatch are anime, and only a couple characters are edgy, and the game has a high skill ceiling but... Whatever.
Mrrgle The Mediocre the game has an extremely low skill ceiling. Gameplay comes down to "use X skill when Y happens" and that's it. It's not complicated, and almost anyone could join in on the esport scene of overwatch is they had enough dedication. I quit overwatch just because of how easy it is. The game rewards and welcomes new players, which isn't a bad thing, but it's just something that makes it a bad esport. And no, it's not an "easy to learn hard to master" type of game. It's just easy to learn.
You'll find that games become esports based not on their competitive viability, but popularity. Games with a lower skill ceiling are, ironically, more likely to be popular, as people won't be turned off when they get their ass handed to them. If baby's first arena shooter can become an esport, Mario Kart can.
Love your stuff, you deserve many more subs, keep doing what you're doing and good luck in the future (:
IT was built and meant to be a eSports. Thats why, mechanics like "specials" where reamde/balanced out this time and also why you can have a team carrying the game around and use wifi(aka Ad-hock) lan party and play it anywhere.
Just check the 1st trailler for switch and see wish game shows up on the "eSports" scene.
The clothing system also has potential for sponsors. I believe Nintendo already revealed a promotional branded gear for Splatoon 2 in Japan that players can get through my Nintendo. Theoretically if Nintendo cooperated there could be duplicates of in game gear with sponsor branding placed on it that esports teams could use and could even provide a boost to Nintendo revenue wise from ad dollars
This needs to happen. I was actually interested in the e3 Splatoon 2 tournament. I got into it like how people get into sports. It was crazy
You spelled in wrong it's E S C O R T S
what?
Yes. It would be something I would REALLY wanna watch.
I feel like Nintendo needs to support this game's competitive scene. It will give the game a great launch pad if they hold the first few large competitions.
As it stands I'm not sure it can succeed as it take 10 switches (4 per term and 2 spectators) to hold a single round. in a tournament you could be hosting dozens of games at a time.
Also, can i get a specator mode to just kick back and watch some randoms go at it? Like in smash 4 where i can bet a few coins on a team.
Id love to see splatoon 2 become a e-sport, but dont have turf war as a competitive game mode.
i agree. the only stuff that matters in turf war is the last 30 seconds of that mode
I agree, Turf War is just Splat Zones but with a fixed timer. You ink your spawn then go to mid and fight for control over mid for 3 minutes.
In Splat Zones roles are much less defined, you can have one big ass zone or multiple zones, timer goes down fast making games quick, overtime doesn't last long, penalty seconds make mistakes bearable etc. Turf War is just worse Splat Zones.
It isnt almost all tourneys just do ranked modes
With how the amiibo's work in the new splatoon game, it really allows for people to make their own perfect loadout that they can bring anywhere
Great video! The only thing that I think that can make this better is for your voice EQ out some of the lower end and add a De Esser
+PK Waves thanks for the tips!
I have hopes for it that's for sure. I mean they set it up well enough to make that first step easier. And the following one as well. But beyond that we shall see.
As a Splatoon competitive player, you said EXACTLY what I've been thinking. I'm honestly very concerned about the BIG factor of Nintendo not officially supporting it competitively. It will be a big challenge, it's not like grassroots competitive games lasting is common... but I'm hoping to fight for it's chances and hope the community keeps the passion for it. I think major lan events is something essential that will need to happen to help it grow and show we mean business.
Gotta love that microphone quality.
Not going to say it could be or couldn't be, since I'm not into the eSport scene... But I will say this:
Holy hell have the matches in Splatoon 2 SPIKED in aggressiveness! I played Splatoon 1 til Splatoon 2 came out - it took YEARS for 9/10 battles to get extremely intense. But in Splatoon 2? Heck, it's only been a few weeks. The poor level 1s are getting thrown in HARD with how fast paced the battles get -- and it's actually making THEM hard! I've seen some Level 1s (that I friended since they still tried despite being overwhelmed) get to level 20 - with TWICE the skill of the people who used to bully them around. And this is just Turf War.
... Splatoon 2 is going to be far more competitive than Splatoon 1 in the long run. But, again, no idea if it's eSport material. I have no clue on that stuff.
So I have used the new Spectator mode in many matches, but I find that being a spectator is a much less satisfying thing to watch. You are able to see the entire map at any time, and be able to see any sneaky play from the other team at any time. It still may work but I find it unlikely.
I wish Splatoon Is a esport
I myself am part of a small esports team for Splatoon 2 and have competed in a few tournaments. There is 100% a dedicated fanbase for this becoming an esport. I think Nintendo will eventually give their support when they see how well Splatoon 2 does on the esports scene
I think Splatoon 2 should already be considered an esport. Nintendo held a pretty large tournament for the e3 qualifiers and that just shows how much they want the game to be pushed. Splatoon already had an established esports scene, it was just a ton more popular in japan than here in the US. So with more people in America buying a switch, getting into competitive splatoon 2 would be a breeze and the chances for it to be more popular in the US goes up a significant amount. I wouldn't ask the question "Can Splatoon 2 become an Esport" I'd ask "Can Splatoon 2 Survive as an Esport" and to that question I say yes. The game is fun to watch and play and all you need is a team of 4 friends to really start grinding it out competitively. Well you probably need more than 4 for a decent team but still. I see a lot of people in the comments saying that why should people play splatoon 2 competitively when they feel that the people playing at the top level aren't much better than them, which to me seems ignorant. Anything at a top level is stressful to play. They're playing with money on the line and such, it'll be nerve racking to even play to your fullest without messing up and feeling like you cost your team the match. To me if you really think top level splatoon players aren't much better than you and you think that's why splatoon 2 can't be an esport then I suggest making a team and signing up for an online tournament to really see if that's true.
I swear everyone in the comments of any video to do with Nintendo thinks that the US and Japan are the only places where Nintendo consoles and games are sold, and where tournaments are held. They're not.
Rainmaker is like distruptor from cars 2 or plant a bomb in enemy base mode. And splatoon 2 became esport since global testfire in japan already.
When I saw 'spectator mode' I was like "what if splatoon 2 became a esport like your idea. Even though it is very early to become a esport but why not have a another game so more people could watch splatoon 2. While it gives alot of popularity to the game so.. why not!
Good video you got a new sub today
needs so many more views... subscribing!
i like how they make splatoon a championship and hire shoutcasters but ignore melee when it's played at evo and dreamhack every year.
You forgot to mention the competitive nature of splat zones, essentially domination.
Really wish you would have done research into the already strong community. We frequent 800+ online attendees for events and have had multiple LAN major events across the USA.
There's also some kinks that need to be ironed out:
1. The ability to change weapons and character clothings/effects after matches
2. Simple voice chat, yes that's right
My favourite esport is the cory in the house video game
I doubt it will become a staple Esport, but it turning into the shooter equivalent to competitive Melee seems more plausible imo.
I do kind of like Nintendo's stance on esports in a sense since it lets the community build itself how it wants, and it lets older games survive even with newer titles out (Melee). However, it would be nice to see them help...
I think you mean
E-SCORTS
Splatoon 2 could definitely be a part of e-sports....IMO.
Splatoon does have a competitive scene.
the fact u said tower control is the most competitive is hilarious, with tower control, u can only have so many pushes making it uneventful and teams unable to comeback. Splat zones is a bit better and improves on these problems but still somewhat limited pushes, but rainmaker ooh ooh ooh huh rainmaker no doubt in my mind is the most competitive limitless pushes and there is ALWAYS a way to come back and also in my opinion the most fun to watch
Japan has gotten some large tournaments for the first game with insane prize payouts. I believe it was Nintendo (and another outlet that was the main sponsor) that sponsored it.)
It can but they'd have to make a new mode that lasts a little longer and is a little bigger arena I guess
you do realize that there has already been a competitive splatoon scene for over a year now? splatoon 2 just makes the game much better for this community, with the spectator and lan modes, as well as better balanced weapons/abilities/specials and a whole new crowd of people on the switch
Just by looking at it i can tell they've left room for another game.
Nintendo needs dedicated servers for e sports to work. How can you improve upon your skills with latency issues and unbalenced refresh rates in different parts of the world getting in the way.
i say that it has a chance but i don't see it happening there just isn't enough there, the game lacks a lot of customization. we can't change our weapons mid game we can't have a perfect setup i.e the grenade we want the special we want and the right gun. atleast we can fix our clothes but it still isn't enough. not to mention lack of voice chat and how we have to jump through all these hoops just to play with friends it's hard enough to play with friends let alone actually start a team and build an unbeatable squad
If Super Smash Bros Melee can be an Esport, so can Splatoon. And I only say that because even though Melee's a great game, it has been out for a decade and you only see 4 characters, if that many, at the highest level of play. If 4 characters and 3 stages are not stale in 10 years time, no way Splatoon gets old, ever.
I really want the community to build itself like smash bros did. I just like nintendo strict way of running things when it comes to stuff like this. I get splatoon is seen as a kids game because of its weird concept but i feel we need to aim the community at an older audience because if we just focus on the newcomers and lesser known people the audience will be not as interessted. Its like this, who would you rather see fight in a smash bros tournament? M2k and hbox? Or joey no name and some random dude who just came out of nowhere. Im not saying avoid or not allow newcomers im just saying to use the older well known to build up the basic foundation and slowly bring in newcomers to grow the fanbase and not cause this huge confusion of random new faces. Splatoon 2 can and should be an esport because it has everything layed out for the fans we just need to manage how we assemble it and build it up. After that we just maintain it.
It has potential but the lack of in game voice communication it will have hard time unless discord is being used because the voice communicating app and headset are a JOKE. It also need a better spectator tool. And Nintendo's lack or fully pushing their games to be ESports is killing it aswell.
One big problem is that matches are really short (often not even 4minutes). This decreases watch enjoyment very much. The spectator mode also is very awkward and would have to be redesigned a lot.
If they're short, that means there can be multiple rounds, and between these rounds, the mode may change, and the players of both team can equip other weapon and gear
That actually increases hype
What happened to Splat Zones?
Savage swipe at chess there, bud
+Chemtrail Dreams Thing is, I also said was a perfectly balanced masterpiece. It's just that Twitch chat won't like it lol.
NIKMOE better hide before the white-plays-first imbalance debate gets here
Yes I think it'll become an esport because it is very competitive and everybody except from me loves it.
How'd u forget splat zones
In order to be an esport, it must have audience.
I generally think splatoon 1 didn't have the power to be an eSport, but splatoon 2 brings so much more variety that I now think it will become an eSport. (Hopefully!)
Well it’s 2020 and splatoon2 is still going strong
If the Switch had a functionality of Twitch streaming like the PS4 it would be much, much easier...
2 Weeks later... ITS ESL NOW!!!!!!!!
The way I see it is that this game is obviously designed to appeal to a competitive player base. Melee wasn't, yet Melee is one of the biggest and oldest esports to exist, and as you said, they didn't even have Nintendo supporting them. I fully believe that if Melee can do it after such a struggle, then Splatoon 2 shouldn't have much of a problem, again as you said, if they have a dedicated player base.
Until they can figure basic things out like voice chat the switch will not have any esport games, this is a great game but it is not close to ready to be part of the competitive scene. If you can't communicate with your teammates natively you have no business even asking this question, you cannot control or create custom matches, to use league play you need to get ranked up first, there is no team matchmaking supported in all game modes.
I still can't believe that wii sports isn't an e-sport.
I'll put it simply
In Japan: Yes it can literally be the Overwatch of Japan if there's a competitive Splatoon tournament in Japan the Japanese and even some Western Visitors will come in and take a crack at the Japanese
Outside of Japan: I... don't know... I mean Splatoon 2 is not as streamed heavily on Twitch as you'd expect
I'd love it if it did.
Put motion control on please
Boiii what about splatzones?
It's pretty obvious it can be splatoon has a large loyal fan base. And Nintendo is giving it the exposure
A very good video Iv'e never played splatoon1 but since I got my switch Iv'e only gotten my feet wet playing splatoon 2 and for a kid friendly game they may have the most competitive community iv'e seen in a while.
0:36 , the sticks and buttons are reversed
Yes it can be an esport. But there’s going to need to be a player /team that can break records no one else has ever done to attract the attention the game needs. The top pros are good but they don’t do anything you can’t find in another pro splatoon player. The prize pools are microscopic compared to others and that lack of money plus lack of buzz is a clear path to failure. Someone or a team needs to step up and stream unbreakable records so that there’s a player or group of players the game can market around. Ninja has done a breathtaking job with fort nite and getting drake to play on a stream did wonders for the game. I always try to tell the community I wanna step up and be that player. But the game is incredibly team focused, and that hogs down an individuals chance to shine. Splatoon 2 will either be a major bust in esports or the biggest underdog victory ever, either way, what is absolutely clear is that the best of the best of the pros in splatoon 2 aren’t doing anything near what it’s going to take to take the game to that level. There’s a reason it ranks near rock bottom in all of esport games in terms of audience numbers and prize pools. There is no one single player that has achievements no other player has. Set to destroy x is amazing at dominating lan, but in my opinion it’s a combination of increadible talent from their team and weak competition. What the community is doing now is good if you want your audience to be strictly splatoon 2 player. The only way to become a true major esport is to get people who don’t play the game to watch and people who don’t make video games to invest a lot of money. I’ll be that guy, who does those record breaking things, or else splatoon 2 will continue to be a game where its biggest prize pool is a measly $1,500 that’s to be divided between 4 players.
2 years of splatfests
They just need to add more gamemodes like TDM or Search an destroy type modes or else it won’t become a esport game because people only watching people just paint is going to get boring after a while
I think Splatoon 2 could become an esport
there are four modes!
what about splatzones
I read it as E-SCORTS
just ganna say maybe there are ganna be like three times to play the game cuz the mode's
It could become an esport for sure. But it'll be hard to funnel players into it...the Ranked mode is really awful and I imagine it's difficult to get good at the game enough to be esports level
This is my first time hearing "E-sport"
I think this wont be possible because it is a sequel. Dota 2 is a sequel aswell, but splatoon 2 is a sequel to splatoon the way call of duty infinite warfare is a sequel to call of duty modern warfare. There will be more splatoons (I think at least) just like COD. But hey, that's just a theory! A game theory! Thanks for watching!
It can definitely become an esport as long as Nintendo doesn't shoot themselves in the foot again a la pokken tournament and Arms
yesPLEASE
Personally I think Nintendo World Championships are enough for nowm but Esports would be really cool for when NWC won't use Splatoon 2 anymore.
perhaps the most important factor for a game to be esport is it populaty
Booyah!
U roasted chess😂
Not without dedicated servers for everyday practice/play. Peer to peer isn't that great so far.
LAN is good for tournament level though.
Since splatoon is dying I feel like splatoon is close to having a small or not even a chance in becoming an esport
If Nintendo does not fix this, it is impossible
Server tick rate
• Splatoon 1: 25Hz
• Splatoon 2:12.5Hz
• Overwatch: 63Hz
• CSGO: 64 Hz
• Team Fortress 2: 66 Hz
• Battlefield One: 45 Hz
• Rainbow Six Seige: 60 Hz
its amazing this isnt a big one like overwatch yet and people werw hypeing it up to possibility be one
I want Nintendo to part of esports. I want splatoon 2 to be big
I think splatoon can become an esport, but if Nintendo doesn't back it and keeps it grassroots, then it'll take a long time for it to actually become a sustainable esport and probably will look similar to how melee is now
the stick controls are very uncomfortable
