Primary point of a purpose- driven platform and secondarily familiarization is absolutely the right thing to say. A shooter just getting or building a rifle for simple range days and scarcely employed home defense is going to be night and day to that being used daily in work and advanced training in austere conditions-- if you're the former, definitely also recommend you save the money and get a simple yet reliable system (building a very decent mid-level AR will cost about 800 to 900 dollars at current prices of parts) and consider the point of purpose/ use and conditions (i.e. DI vs. Piston, Pistol or SBR vs. standard length, etc.) in relation to reliability and affordability.
Train, practice, train, practice, and train some more.

Go buy a blemished complete PSA lower . Then go to MAS defense and buy a complete upper with a BA barrel. That’s what I did yesterday. Now I have a very solid and complete 300blk rifle $495 all in.
Edit: I don’t suggest buying a rifle/pistol chambered in 300blk. Ammo is too expensive now. Especially for someone just getting into shooting.

I paid $400 for my first AR from a friend, swapped the handguard on it for a $200 Vltor handguard and swapped the polymer lower for aluminum. After a while the trigger pins started coming lose and kept popping out and locking up my trigger. Turns out, it was just my anderson receiver was damaged. So I traded the old AR for $650 (he bought it for parts) twards a new AR platform I built with my buddy who is a gunsmith. By the time I was done with my build it was roughly a $1200 gun that will last me the rest of my life.
