- As a wildlife photographer, Macro photography isn't something I do too often, tending instead to focus on megafauna in my Work.
Developing your skills and challenging yourself is important, so whilst I'm out in the Rainforest I set myself a small side project to shoot macro portraits of some of the awesome little creatures myself and the researchers came across out in the field. Today we are going behind the scenes of my whiteboxing before heading out for some more wide angles in the field.
Do you like shooting macro, or do you tend to find the larger animals attract your attention? After two months in the Amazon I certainly found a new love for macro shooting and will certainly be spending more time in the future, exploring the miniature natural world! Especially focusing on the wide angle side, my Nikon 20mm makes me fall in love with it a little more on every shoot!

In Peru I have been staying with the awesome CREES foundation at the MLC in Manu. Over the last 30 years they have taken an area of deforested farmland and by working with local people, with a solid conservation strategy have shown just what's possible by bringing the rainforest and animals back to this part of Manu!

In this series I'm using the epic Scout trigger from Cognisys, I've been testing these for over a year now and really have only good things to say! You can check out more info on their site www.cognisys-i...

I had a bird projectile crap berries all over my whitebox, so it's more of a purple-ish box now. Will definitely use that paper trick! Thanks!
No worries, the white paper is handy, I wish I'd had had a bigger roll for larger background and bigger subjects!
@@TomMasonPhoto One of my friends uses a bright white shower curtain and has good success. Plus it's easy to clean and carry!
That's a cracking Idea for the future!
Didn't know about the white box
Amazing results 👍
In the fifth minute you looked like a Hobbit :D

Hey Tom, I am going on a trip to the Okavango Delta in Botswana in March. I am looking for a monopod to use in the vehicles. Induro makes a 100$ monopod that is too short for standing but is tall enough for the vehicle. Should I get that or spend the extra money for a taller induro or gitzo to use there and at home for standing? Thank you!!
Personally I’ve always used Gitzo products, never had one fail me and have used them all over the world. For the extra investment the Gitzo in my mind makes sense - buy once and never buy again! The Gitzo will be reliable long term and allow you to use pretty much any camera on top. That would be where my money was put. Cheers, Tom
Anyone thinking of photographing Australian snakes should do a snake handling course, about two thirds of species can kill you.
Yes of course - most of the ones in the jungle can as well hence why I’m working with biologists and specialists who Handle the subjects. Common sense and safety first always
