He has the perfect voice for radio or to put people to sleep at night
Yeah, maybe I should try ASMR
Yes he does
What a truly honest account of how many of us solve problems with model T's. I have learned exactly the same way, that research is a necessity because we have the documentation from those who have repaired model T's for over 100 years. It saves what is learned by trial and error to logical solution time!
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for watching!
love the old cars . the fact there still rolling down our roads is testament to how good they was made . old girl is 96 years old still running and looks great . bet none of the new cars will ever see that .
The rugged simplicity of the T is remarkable. They are fairly reliable, but what makes them very different than modern cars, is they are rugged and repairable; everything can be rebuilt, remachined, or repaired.
Excellent, the lesson will apply to our 31 Model A coupe too.
You would think, at my age, I would have learned this lesson already!
All an engine needs is air/fuel mixture, compression, and spark, in the right ammounts, and in the right order. Advice my dad had given me - and has never steered me wrong. It always is the simple things.
Right you are!
AMAZING! I got my “new” 1920, Canadian-built Model T just last weekend and finally got the courage to try starting and driving it this morning (Saturday). It started right up, but ran quite poorly and really lacked power. After a few trips up and down our road, it stalled and wouldn’t go again - so I checked the fuel tank and noted that it was very low. As I was on a very slight uphill slope, I figured that I was low on fuel and called my wife for a pit stop delivery. I fiddled with the carb needle adjustment and nothing made much difference….the sputtering and backfiring continued so, I’m heading out to check the plugs now.
Thanks so much - new subscriber here.
Glad you liked the video! Good luck getting your T running better.
Great video!! Don’t beat yourself up too bad, We’ve all done it! Glad it wasn’t anything serious!!!👊🏻
It's funny, in retrospect...
Love the drinking in the video😂😂
Thanks for watching!
I am committing this video to memory. Cheers
There is much that can be learned from my many mistakes :|
My 26 runabout had a bad plug in it also. Neat car
👍
Great video! Very common problem with my Model T's! They seem to like fowling #1 spark plug.
Thanks! I wonder why No. 1? Any ideas?
I usually take a failure in one system to check everything anyway. I learned this after doing like you, and just checking the wrong things first, and after going through that cycle a few times I realized that it ends up keeping the car in better overall condition anyway, so it's not wasted effort. it's better to have everything running correctly now than to have only the most recently broken part replaced, and everything else be on its way out in the next few months. and so long as you're not jumping to replace expensive parts without knowing that they need replacement, it's not a waste of money, either.
Good advice. Thanks!
Always good to work one's way up from the simple to the catastrophe.
Those 3095 Autolite plugs are no good. Champion X are the best for the Ford T 😇🙏
I think you are right!
90% of fuel problems are ignition problems.
Thanks for sharing.
I love that quote. Thanks
That's Rite, I collect old engines and that is my saying on them also 😇🙏
Nice video! Same objective, but a different approach to shorting the spark plug, I lift each coil one by one just far enough to break contact and see if the engine runs worse or the same. Another way to find the dead cylinder.
That's a better idea!
Mine has been idling a bit rough weirdly after I changed the exhaust manifold but I found one cylinder had low compression. I probably will be grinding the valves sometime.
Valve job is my next video!
Sometimes I use an infrared thermometer to check temperatures on each plug, a dead cylinder will be colder
That's a great idea!
Excellent, thanks for sharing, new sub. Cheers.
Welcome!
thanks for the tip. i"ll try to remember this next time my t pukes.
... and we both know there will be a next time. Cheers!
With a model T,
everything is simple.
I was rooting for bad commutator.
Simply complicated. Thanks for watching.
At least you found the problem.
Yeah. Sure felt stupid tho! Thanks for watching
Makes Ya wonder = How did anything get repaired in the '20's & 30's before GPS, Cell phones, the internet and UA-cam? Could it be the old blacksmith learned new tricks?
I guess so!
Guess I am “missing” something. You already tested the cylinders at the spark plugs. Didn’t you find number one dead at that time? Don’t you do that sequentially anyway? I guess maybe you mean you removed each plug and with them attached .. rested the plugs on the head to see if you have a spark at the bottom of the plugs. Right?
I first checked that I could get an arc at the top of each plug, using a screw driver shorted to ground. This was my big mistake, because I assumed that this meant that I had spark 'in' each cylinder. But I only verified that spark voltage was was being supplied to each cylinder - and I ASSUMED that each spark plug was sparking. But it never occurred to me that a spark plug could fail. For some reason, that plug failed and does not spark even though it has good spark signal. When I was testing arc at the top of each cylinder, all four seemed fine. If I had then shorted the cylinders, one at a time, I would have learned that one of the cylinders wasn't firing...and then I would have known that the plug itself had failed.
Ohh .. ok, I see. Have you ever used the original Champion X plugs? Not the new version, but actual antique plugs. I use my 1923 T runabout as my daily car. It runs very well because I routinely clean the (New Day) timer, inspect .. clean and adjust the plugs and I check the points on my coils. When it comes to electric elements, clean and inspected is important. I also like trying unusual carburetors just for fun so I guess they are never a problem.
@@markosterman419 I do not have any original rebuildable Champion plugs. I wish I did! I haven't come upon a set. I will try to buy some, when I do. How do you clean the plugs? Blasting cabinet? Regarding carburetors... I am looking for a spare NH to rebuild, and so far, can't even find one of those up here in my area. Frustrating.
Those 3095 Autolite plugs are not good 😇🙏
I learned that the hard way
Next time add gallons. Whats a leader ?? Add gas!!
😂
grease on the comuntater
A tiny bit of grease on the NewDayTimer (commutator) seems to be ok, but too much is Definately a problem. Ask me how I know...
