Just because she's from France doesn't mean she wants to answer questions on behalf of her entire country, ask he about herself and her work like you would an American
And why comparing her to Meryl Streep, very irritating! Meryl is to me the best US actress of the last decades. Both are at the top of their trade, both are very smart but both are different.
Why do americans always have to compare themselves with others? Isabelle Huppert can't be compared with Meryl Streep because they are two complitely different actresses. You kind of discredit the french actress comparing her. Both are very great, but in their own ways. I think that was a bit rude to start with...
I don't think he was comparing their talent but the place they occupy in their respective countries. And he's right in that respect. Isabelle is the most versatile and psychologically intense actress in France just as Meryl is in the United States. Now, who do I prefer? I really like Isabelle.
I've seen all Huppert's movies of last year and I can promise you that Elle is not her best performance (she constantly have that post-plastic surgery poutting mouth), she's way better in Things to Come. If she was nominated for that movie, I might agree. But what Portman did in Jackie is just astonishing! And Ruth Negga is so great in Loving!

You totally missed the joke. The moment he started talking about "freedom fries", you should have understood that he was trying to be funny and sarcastic. You didn't understand any of the humor or the joke he was playing. Stephen was making a joke about American arrogance, the type that mostly comes from stupid, ignorant Republicans and the conservatives that vote for them. It's the same way John Oliver makes jokes about Great Britain's past of imperialism and the same way you might hear a German make a joke about how their country was once run by Nazis. Learn to have a sense of humor.
I guess I must've missed the physical cues, because I was listening to this interview and didn't really notice a change in Stephen's inflection or tone.
You and sweiland75 both totally missed the joke. That was humor. He wasn't making those statements literally. It's funny how everyone wants to tell Americans, "Don't take yourselves so seriously," yet you all don't know how to take American humor. Notice the part where he mentioned "freedom fries". Remember "Freedom Fries" during the start to the war in Iraq, a foolish concept initiated by conservatives and Republicans. "Freedom fries" is a dumb concept that would never be embraced by any non-conservative, such as Stephen. Stephen is an American making a joke about American arrogance, the type that mostly comes from ignorant Republicans and conservatives. Interesting how when John Oliver makes a joke about Great Britain's violent, aggressive past you can immediately tell it's a joke, but when an American does it it's something else. Learn to take a joke.
That was a joke criticizing American Imperialism, if I got that right. He is saying that France has it's own culture and that's probably the reason why americans rivalize french people.
You clearly haven't seen any of Huppert's work. Otherwise it wouldn't occur to you put Meryl and Isabelle in the same sentence. Because it is simply too ridiculous.

US audiences are very tough about accents and I think Colbert knows that or that his production team tells him that. This interview would've been way more fluent and "fun" to watch if she could just have talked in french but as that was not the case it ended it up coming off as awkward. Meryl Streep is a virtuoso of acting, no doubt, the dream of any director. But Isabelle Huppert is a brave actress and very explorative who works at the deepest level, always searching, always exploring, always trying new things with new directors.. a true artist always looking forward and within. If you compare their filmographies, I personally admire Huppert's more-because I place those style of films at a higher standard. But they're both amazing artists.
She is something else as an actress. MEryl is amazing but i never saw in a movie that is as violent as the ones Huppert did. Also, Huppert dissapears in the role. She is astonishing as a lady of her age.
I was surprised to hear Isabelle could speak English, because I saw her in Things To Come where she was basically speaking the greatest portion of dialogue in French and then there came one bit where she spoke a bit of English to someone who was already talking in English.
I can't wait to see it!!...If anyone who love watching films haven't seen Isabelle Huppert's some of her resume yet. ...do it now! if it isn't then have no idea about world films....😉
As she should, she deserves it so much. Not like she needs any Hollywood recognition to validate her brilliant career and wonderful talent. But yeah, it's nice to see her everywhere and getting all those awards and recognition.

Isabelle. So charming lady.
“Elle” was an amazing movie and Huppert was robbed of the Oscar she deserved for it.
Stephen is awkward, maybe Meyers would have been better to deal with someone with a resume like Huppert.
She don't need to be someone else, she's just simply Isabelle Huppert.
But they're both amazing artists.
hope she wins that Oscar.
Uh I love Meryl Streep but don't insult Isabelle lol
just love how subs say "speak french". thanks, now i understand everything
She should win the Oscar !
Isabelle Huppert is an epitome of acting
Man she is campaigning her ass off lmao
she deserves it ,
lmaoao
Indigo child what are you talking about? this is such a stupid thing to say hahaha. this is a 6 minute Late Night interview, not Charlie Rose.
As she should, she deserves it so much. Not like she needs any Hollywood recognition to validate her brilliant career and wonderful talent. But yeah, it's nice to see her everywhere and getting all those awards and recognition.
Correcting: Meryl Streep is the american Isabelle Huppert
Isabelle speaks better English than almost all others! “The Lacemaker”. 👌👏👌👏👏
