Eddie Van Halen - Tribute to Jeff Porcaro (Toto) - December 14, 1992
Press Conference Interview and Rehashing Live Jimi Hendrix “Fire” cover
The Classic Tribute Concert From 1992 To The Late Toto Drummer Jeff Porcaro, legendary session drummer and Toto skinsman for many years, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 5th August 1992 at his home in Southern California.
On 14th December the same year, Jeff s surviving band mates (which included his brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro, Mike passed on in 2015) performed at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles alongside a host of music giants who had gathered to pay their respects to the talent, versatility and downright human decency of a man who had performed alongside the great and the good during his career, which had been so sadly cut short while the master musician was in his prime.
The audience was filled with musicians too, as well as admirers from all of Porcaro’s vast work as one of the industry s most in-demand studio musicians, and as a founding member of the multi award-winning Toto.
First of the guest stars to appear was Michael McDonald (who has lent his voice to a Toto project or two) with David Crosby singing backup. Next out was Donald Fagen of Steely Dan (with whom Porcaro had played regularly) making a rare appearance to an appreciative crowd.
Boz Scaggs was also on hand to perform Lowdown and Lido Shuffle from his 1976 smash Silk Degrees album, while Don Henley offered up his Dirty Laundry. Joining Toto frontman and lead guitarist Steve Lukather for a duelling axe version of Jimi Hendrix’s Fire was Eddie Van Halen who managed to raise the stage volume to near ear-splitting levels, and stayed on to accompany Toto on their first hit Hold The Line.
Other Toto hits performed naturally included Rosanna , Africa, and I’ll Be Over You . Considering Porcaro’s death came after a commitment to tour the Far East, this tribute was sadly, but befittingly, rumoured to be the last official Toto concert. This, thankfully, was not the case of course, as the band continue to perform and record to this day Filling in for Jeff on drums was Simon Phillips who had to feel somewhat strange sitting in that coveted seat.
The show was capped off with special guest George Harrison joining in on guitar for a line-swapping, Joe Cocker arrangement of With A Little Help From My Friends between Lukather, Scaggs, Henley, McDonald and Crosby, with the entire crowd on their feet.
This entire tribute concert were available on this double CD set, which reveals a show as emotionally charged as it was brilliantly conducted, and which will surely remain a rare delight for fans of Jeff Porcaro, Toto and the host of legends who devoted their time to say one last goodbye.

I took drum lessons from Joe Porcaro when I was 14 years old , one day I came to the house on Valleyheart and Joe said " My son Jeff is in the studio practicing go in there and watch him" , OMG and so I did , well it was a life experience that I will cherish for the rest of my life . He was really nice to me and I've been telling this story for 47 years .
I have to agree with everyone. I met Jeff when I was 21 (58 now) and I was the guitar in a band called "Baboo" named after our lead singer. Jeff was good friends with Baboo, who played with so many including the Toto Guys, Ry Cooder, Jackson Browne, etc. and Jeff was producing our band. I remember going David's (Paich) place and he was going to also help us out. Jeff and I spent some time outside of that because he invited me to his house while he was building his studio and as everyone said he was so generous. Here he was HUGE in the music business and I was nobody, but he treated me like a bro and inspired me. A couple/few years after our band disbanded I saw him at A & M where I was recording and my 5 year old son was there with me and we sat and talked for a long time and he was so cool again. A great spirit. I remember he bought my son a soda and what was weird was years later I said to my son "Do you remember that guy" because he name came up and he said "Yeah, he bought me a soda". I still have about 20 or 30 cassettes from our pre-production over at Leeds and he set up his drums next to our drummer's up on the stage and I had the distinct pleasure of playing with him and as everyone said Jeff was unbelievable! Off the chain. I'm going to digitize those cassettes in the next little bit and listen. All I can say is R.I.P. Jeff. You were a bro to me in the short time we hung out and I will always remember that and celebrate your life! I hope the family is doing well!
I'd love to listen to the tapes.
@@kilingkiling-tinybell When I digitize it I will post a link.

Wow… what a story man. That’s freakin crazy haha
The amount of records those dudes on that stage moved combined. Mind boggling.
Yep. I remember scrolling through a list of the records Jeff and Luke were on and scrolling and scrolling and scrolling. I’ve been a Toto fan since the beginning, but it was the first time I had a feel for how influential they were.
Incalculable the influence that group of dudes had...I mean holy crap, Boz Scaggs and EVH hangin out. Luke, Crosby..fkn mind blowing 🤯 🤯🤯..Porcaro played for so many huge acts its absurd!
When Jeff died..a piece of all ToTo fans hearts were burried with him..when Mike died
. That wound was open all over again..I have been a fan since 1978..2021..now..this band still is number one in my heart.
I couldn't agree more.
I have recently discovered them and I was so heartbroken to know that Jeff and Mike passed away. I can imagine how hard it was for their og fans to first lose Jeff and then Mike. They were extremely talented. RIP
Jeff was a big part of Toto. I got goosebumps when Luke called everyone of these guys onto the stage....
Realising how much Jeff meant in the music industry is chilling.... All these musicians speaking up about Jeff..
You can really see Luke all teared up more than everyone else. Jeff was more than a friend to him. Rest in peace Jeff Porcaro!
Jeff's work on those Steely Dan albums are legendary
Two of the greatest guitar players ever! Mr. Van Halen and Luke! Honoring a fantastic drummer. Jeff was one of the greats by far! RIP to Eddie and Jeff.
If anyone doubts that Jeff Porcaro was one of the greatest musical drummers to grace this earth ,just look at that line-up that came together for him. There are maybe a handful of drummers in all of history that would get such a tribute!
not bonham not moon nor peart either they all shoul dbe honored same as jeff but jeff is my number one inspiration on everything
I’ve been a drummer since 10 years old. I am now 46 years old. Jeff Porcaro was a huge influence for me. One of the greatest.
Before I left LA I visited Jeff's grave ❤
Eddie was the only one with tears in his eyes. That's NOT to say the others were not feeling sad but rather to just to point out what a beautiful Soul he was with a compassionate heart.
probably drunk lol.
@@martynapalm4950
Come on, Edward was a compassionate man. Didn't you ever see the Jason Becker video in 1996 when Edward stopped by Jason's home?
I miss Jeff and Edward a lot. RIP
❤
I noticed that, too. Edward had his ups and downs, but he was a genuinely deep, kind-hearted dude.
Jeff REALLY locked in an unmistakable groove on I Keep Forgettin’ - He is still sorely missed
Rest In Peace.Mr.Eddie Van Halen.Great guitarist. Thank you so much!
He's dead, when???😮

@@ChrisPatrick-q6k dude, 3 years ago tomorrow.
It’s unbelievably devastating how many people up there are no longer here. Porcaro, Van Halen, Crosby...
The music will forever be celebrated
Yes, but Crosby lived a long life, especially considering how many drugs he did. Also, Mike Porcaro was up there and he passed away in 2015 from ALS, at the age of 57. PS With all the drugs they did, I am surprised Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are still alive.
@@thomasluby1754 As I understand it Jagger wasn’t a druggie. He left that to Keith.

@@stevezweig5337He's a smokie, tobacco
I heard they raised 455,000.00 for Jeff's three sons Christopher, Miles and Nico.Christopher is now an artist/writer/poet, Miles became a drummer and was attending Rollins College in Florida during his untimely death in 2017, Nico graduated from Rollins College and is a Correspondent/Writer for National Geographic.
This is amazing. What an awesome tribute. The great thing about Luke is that whenever he speaks, it is always from the heart. You can tell he is devastated here.
It is killin' him...he wants to bawl his eyes out....Luv Luke!
What a great honor for Jeff Porcaro I have never seen anything like this
Jeff and Mike were both just incredible and loving cats. RIP to both of them.
I was never that big of a Toto fan, but knew of many of their tunes. I remember his death however, because I won tickets to this show at Universal thru KLOS radio and will never forget it. What a line up and set list. Truly an event that will live on and speak of how Jeff touched everyone with his talent and kindness.
I loved Toto the way a lot of us did through the 80s, through a deep, abiding appreciation of and respect for the musicianship of its members and the perpetual presence of Toto’s music as part of the soundtrack of our lives. My friends and I were into what was known then as “Metal” but what would disparagingly become known as “Hair Metal,” but somehow came away from the decade with favorites that came from a multitude of more popular artists like Ah Ha, Tears for Fears, Berlin, Michael Jackson, Blondie, Simple Minds, Hall & Oates, and a host of others. Toto, unlike many of the other great pop bands/artists of the 80s, actually made it into my record collection with the 1982 release of Toto IV, which included the miraculous, “Africa” and inimitable, “Rosanna.” The music, like that of Simply Red, Steely Dan, and more is a symphony of brilliance that pleases on multiple levels and brings an almost Zen-like communion to listeners.
They just don’t make ‘em like that, anymore. But, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for their return. We cannot subsist on the airy, soulless stuff being produced today.
@@codacreator6162 Well said!
Such an eclectic collection of legendary musicians. It just shows how wide Jeff's contribution to music was.
I mean, that didn't scratch the surface. Jeff played with a ton of artists! But yea, you aren't wrong.
It is wonderful to see these nice guys together. Many legends on stage. We were very blessed with their music.
Music history on stage 😍
Ladies and Gentlemen, all these friends of Jeff were in the LA Pop scene. Some call it Yacht but it’s a real genuine fusion of rock, jazz and soul. Would have loved to see Jay Graydon, George Benson, Al Jarreau and David Foster. But this is enough. I still can’t believe Jeff has played on half my favorite songs of all time. I had no idea.
I was there for that gig... What a night.
R.I.P Jeff Porcaro! Amazing tribute! Beautiful words, love surrounded
Jeff was a beast. Grove Master, he stayed in the pocket. One of the greatest drummers of all times. ❤
Masters give profound compliments to a master is surreally stupendous. After 29 years, your drum playing still resonates to me, Mr. Jeff Porcaro.
Look at all those legends in that room
I've been a toto fan since 82..i was just 13..jeff quickly became my favorite..his talent, his personality..i wish we still had him
I was fortunate to be at that show. George Harrison joined everyone at the end and they all performed "A Little Help From My Friends." Also, Denny Dias - the original guitarist for Steely Dan - played on a couple of Dan tunes. It was a sentimental but great night. Kind of a long time ago now...
When touring musicians are asked about guitar players Steve Lukather is almost always mentioned -
Dude is an incredible talent and he actually possesses common sense - seems like a nice fella
Jeff Porcaro will always be my favorite drummer for many reasons
Thank you for this important demonstration of love and respectfully for Jeff.
"Gotta do a tribute for a cat like that, he was just too heavy" and hopefully there'll be a similar tribute done for EVH sometime in the next few years!
Aún le deben varios colegas músicos un buen tributo a EVH un músico de tamaño genio musical, tan influyente para varias generaciones de guitarristas, no debe ser ignorado ni olvidado. RIP Jeff & Eddie.
EVH was a one in 250 year musician!!!
@@bassangler73 250?
More like infinity....
@@SmedleyWarIsaRacket I am sure it will be several years before we see another EVH, he is the only guitar player that I can truly say I like every thing he has done musically on the guitar..Plus he more or less invented the Floyd Rose..It will be hard to find another that will devote their whole life to an instrument...I miss him everyday because I always had that hope of one last record and 1 more tour plus he was just a good human all the way around..
Tom Murray - those comments were very sweet and very appropriate
what an awesome tribute to an awesome drummer by all these legendary musicians.
Donald Fagen, Mike Porcaro, Steve Lukather, David Paich, Eddie Van Halen, Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, Don Henley, David Crosby and Simon Phillips all in one stage. Legends paying homage to another legend. R.I.P Jeff. One of the greatest to sit behind the kit.
Talk about a who's who of music. What an amazing lineup of legends here paying respect to a legend.
What a room full of talent...honoring the world's best-kept secret for non-musicians or for those not in the know...
I just checked Jeff's Wiki page. Damn!!! I had no idea he had such a huge resume.
Can’t believe I’m just now seeing this. Such kind words and great praise from everyone.
Luke grew up with Jeff,so understandable he was having a rough time. The Porcaros, Luke and Paich all were in HS together. They knew each other well, all playing together at different times before David, Jeff, Steve and Luke put Toto together - on a strong suggestion from Boz.
Wow....the talent up on that stage and the talent we lost in Jeff.
Master of time, groove, dynamics, u name it he had it. Boz looks like he could be a Porcaro relative esp wearing the same design o glasses Jeff wore. Thanks alot for posting this 👍
You can tell that besides Mike and David. Luke is really lost. You can see it in his eyes and hear it when speaks. Luke always makes it point to say just how much Jeff meant to him.
Luke and Jeff loved each other.
@harleyrider76 Luke looked to Jeff as a big brother.
Thanks for sharing. First time I see this. The concert is legendary. Jeff will always be remembered.
Jeff played drums on "till they take my heart away" by Clair Marlow also on bass was Leland Sklar.. Jeff was awesome
One of the best studio musician’s and an absolute animal live TOTO has left one hell of a legacy . R.I.P.
Worked at Columbia records when Fahrenheit was released. I was setting up the bar early for our suite at Universal. Jeff came walking in. I said Jeff! What can I get get you? He said, No, let me make you a drink. What are having? So I let him 😃 Great drummer with a great personality! What a lineup to pay tribute!! Personally, I always think of Boz ( and Toto) when I think of Jeff. Always remembered I dug the drums on the superb Silk Degrees when it came out!
What a cool story!
Love Toto! Thanks all!
I wish I could see the whole thing when they play... They all are amazing. RIP Eddie.
Amazing man....I have watched 100's of videos that Jeff played on. I am in awe. He made it look so easy.
pardon me...I have some video's to watch Jeff play on.
Someone needs to do an EVH tribute concert........
Grazie Grazie per questo video toto fantastic visti live da yeff a simon tra i migliori musicisti del pianeta
Luke has long said that he doesn’t think a video of this performance exists, but god I hope someone comes forward with one at some point. This would have been an unbelievable concert. I have the bootleg audio, but it doesn’t do a justice
Thanks for writing that. You saved me an effort as I was about to start searching for it. Would also love to watch/listen to it if it ever shows up.
This was an honor to see... Thanks man... These are the best of the best.... so thanks...

What a gem❤🙏Thank you for sharing!
Some of those questions? Sheez.. The grief is real for a man that gave so much to the world of music. Let them have their moment to come together to honour the man....
16:34 - Eddie to Luke, after answering what seemed to be a redundant question: "Good answer, right?" Luke: "It's true."
How cool is this....wish there was more....GIVE ME MORE
Thanks so much for posting this Paulo.

Hey, really nice to see this after all these years. I went to high school with the Porcaros. Jeff and I played drums in marching band together and everything everyone says about him is true. My life was enriched for having known him. While in high school, the whole band played on my Dad's music in the studio. This was pre Lukather. I was also honored to be invited to their first rehearsal with Simon Phillips. But please correct the typo about leaving out his brother's name, Steve Porcaro when you mentioned Jeff's bros (Mike and Steve, not Mike and Jeff!) playing with Toto. Thanks.
I don.t know how you found this, but Thank you for posting.
Serious line of legends here.
God bless them all. We miss Jeff and Eddie immensely. ❤️
Thanks for posting this gem ... I only regret we can't see anything in the second part of the video, but the sound is awesome !!! God I could ear this kind of tune all day .... In fact, I do, since the last 35 years ! 😏
Anyone who reads the liner notes on albums would know the work of Jeff Porcaro along with his brothers, along with his Dad. Truly a class sessionist. I've followed his work for years.
I miss Jeff, Mike and EVH every day. I grew up with these guys' music and influence.
Wow, thanks for posting this 👏

Weird to see Evh and Donald Fagen in the same place, at the same time.
Hearing the congas emanate around Eddie Van Halen is a one time thing. Just imagine what he could create with that.
Respect!
