    As always, you speak so eloquently about each book that I immediately want to drop whatever I’m currently reading to pick up each and every recommendation. I have, coincidentally, purchased a Penguin Shirley Jackson story collection though The Lottery is not in it. I will put it higher on my very vague TBR. Which isn’t to say I don’t love The Lottery. It is probably my favorite short story, though maybe not for long what with all you’ve presented.

      “The Lottery” is a great pick for a favorite short story. It certainly left a lasting impact on me. I think you’d really love “the Witch” by her if you haven’t read it already!

    I really need to read more of Jackson's short stories! I'm convinced she may be one of the greatest writers to ever live.
    Also, I really thought I might see at least one of King's collections on here lol

      I never really like to say people “HAVE to” read certain things… but you HAVE to read Jackson’s short stories! The collection I showed here is incredible.
      I think this video is a good example of how me being a “horror lover” is really a scam lmao. I obviously do love horror, but “literary fiction” might be more my style a lot of the time!

    I need to check out the Flannery O'Connor collection, I read A Good Man Is Hard To Find in college and absolutely loved it. Haven't gotten around to diving into more of her stuff, though. Such a vast and interesting list as usual, king! Lots of stuff I haven't heard of but am now interested in.

      I can’t recommend her stuff enough! If you don’t want to order the big ass “complete stories” jawn, I do recommend the individual collection titled A Good Man is Hard to Find and Other Stories. “A Temple of the Holy Ghost” and “Good Country People” are musts!

    I totally need to look into these. I have Hearn's work on my shelf and need to read it. I saw Kwaidan and absolutely loved it. Personally, the movie could have been a few hours longer and I still would have loved it.
    And Jackson is queen! Love, love, love her.

    This is fantastic!! As always, my friend, is such a delight to listen to your insights into this passionate world of literature. Many of these collections are actually some of my personal favourites and some of the greatest examples of narrative art ever conceived are here. And I must totally and completely agree with you, latin-americans are the true masters of short story. With Cortázar I'm debating between "Final del Juego", "Deshoras" and "Todos los Fuegos el Fuego". "La gallina degollada" is one of the best stories ever told in the history of the world: the atmosphere, the description of the unfortunate characters, the structure and... MAAAAAN, THAT ENDING!!! 😵 perfection in every possible way. "Exile and The kingdom" left me with a sense of helplessness and desolation, Camus may be the easiest of philosophers, but damn, he knows how to talk to you, how to share stories, he was a freakin' wizard of words. There's a plethora of collections that are just too much amazing, but... what da hell, here are a few favourites of mine :3
    1. THE COMPLETE STORIES by Vladimir Nabokov
    2. SUDDENLY, A KNOCK ON THE DOOR by Etgar Keret
    3. CUENTOS CARNÍVOROS by Bernard Quiriny
    4. FICCIONES by Jorge Luis Borges (yes... me too... this is addictive as f***)
    5. MAR NEGRO by Bernardo Esquinca
    6. HAUNTED by Chuck Palahniuk
    7. WHAT IS NOT YOURS IS NOT YOURS by Helen Oyeyemi
    8. KNOCKEMSTIFF by Donald Ray Pollock
    9. THE SECRET OF VENTRILOQUISM by Jon Padgett
    10. TALES OF THE GROTESQUE AND ARABESQUE by Edgar Allan Poe
    *Honorable mentions to "Una Edad Difícil" by Anna Starobinets, "Bark" by Lorrie Moore and the Complete short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer and Roberto Bolaño ^^ lots and lots more, you know how this is 😅 I hope one day we can see a video of your favourite horror/disturbing short stories 😍

      I’m glad someone else shares my views on “La gallina degollada.” It is one of the most haunting things I have ever read.
      And thank you for your own list! I have only read Demonia by Esquinca, but I definitely want to read more by him! Jon Padgett’s short story collection was very effective! I would love to see if I can get him to join a discussion here on my channel. I’m not sure if he does that kind of publicity. 🤔 It’s worth a shot!

    Very cool that you included Cortázar. I totally agree with what you said about him capturing moments that can only exist on the page. • @PlaguedbyVisions
      @PlaguedbyVisions  3 роки тому +1

      Cortázar is the master of the vignette! I really do enjoy when authors realize what the unique powers of writing are and stretch them within an inch of their lives. Rayuela is fantastic. I read it about 10 years ago, so I would definitely enjoy reading it again, and see what path I take this time around. Thank you for watching, Benjamin!

    Wonderful video! “Pierre Menard” is one of my favorite stories of all time. Not sure what it says about my mental health, but I think Borges is absolutely hilarious.
    You gotta read George Saunders. I said it before, I’m saying it again. You will love him.
    I recently discovered Silvina Ocampo through a listicle on a book blog. I’ve been reading her stories and thoroughly enjoying them. I think you have a great point that Latin American writers have mastered the short story, especially the weird short story.

    • @PlaguedbyVisions
      @PlaguedbyVisions  3 роки тому

      Borges can definitely be humorous! I think his homage to Lovecraft, specifically, is where he goes totally bonkers. “Pierre Menard” is absolute parody. When he compares two copies of the exact same passage, but gives different praises to each-Borges was truly memeing on academia.
      Fox 8 is all I’ve read by Saunders, and I really enjoyed it! I found some flaws with its overall message, but I thought even the flaws were provocative as hell. I’m certainly not opposed to reading more by him.
      If you enjoyed Ocampo, you might enjoy Alfonsina Storni, if you haven’t read her poetry before! Not sure how much of it is available in English, however.
      Latin American authors are the masters of the short story! I’m happy everyone agrees. 😎

    Quiroga was mandatory reading when I was in highschool (I'm from Venezuela) and it really impacted me. El almohadón de plumas and La gallina degollada were of course his most famous and disturbing stories of the ones I read but the one that really intrigued me back then was A la deriva, about a guy who gets bitten by a snake and slowly dies in a boat down a river. Reading that story when I was like twelve, changed my perspective about death. It triggered a certain curiosity about this kind of minimalistic, existential, character studies that I keep to this day.

    • @PlaguedbyVisions

      I seem to recall a story also by him where a man is dying and being eaten by flies…? His premises were so mystifying and abhorrent. What a brilliant man!

    Keep up the good job man! Check out Sherwood Anderson's Death in the Woods. It contains some of the best stories I have ever written although it is not horror or something like that. Another work that whould interest you is Books of Blood by Clive Barker. The man is a beast of imagination and he manages to grip your neck and pull it inside his blood-stained pages.

    • @PlaguedbyVisions
      @PlaguedbyVisions  3 роки тому +1

      I have read Books of Blood vol. 1-3. I simply cannot find any copies of the rest! It’s so infuriating! But yes, Barker really wrote a different kind of horror that feels overwhelming and beautifully ornate.

    I need to read more Latin American short fiction! In your list, I've only read short stories by Flannery O'Connor, but I clearly have to read more of these authors! I have a few recommendations for you, if you're up for it. And I'd bet you haven't heard of these writers. If you're up for something surreal, I'd highly suggest The Color Master by Aimee Bender. I love Aimee Bender in general, but this collection is my favorite. I'd also highly recommend A Stranger in this World by Kevin Canty. I would say that the best way to describe his stories is strange and deeply human, definitely up your alley.

    Thomas Ligotti's "The Nightmare Factory", which is an omnibus compilation of 4 of his best collections of the supernatural, comes highly recommended for atmospheric-horror lovers. The standard & consistency is remarkably high.
    Also Ramsey Campbell has numerous collections in print, & is a master of the subtle horror story.
    I'll add Daphne Du Maurier to the list as well - she's better known as a mainstream novelist, but she wrote many short stories a well - pretty much all of them have subtle/macabre or supernatural elements - all of them written in a balanced, haunting, & highly visual style. I get more visual clarity from a single Du Maurier paragraph, than I get from an entire novel from many other writers. Pick up one of her short story collections & you'll see what I mean.

    My favorite single author story collections are Japanese Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Edogawa Ranpo which features The Human Chair. 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill who is the son of Stephen King (and a much better writer than his dad IMHO) The whole collection is outstanding. The Imago Sequence and other Stories and Occultation and other stories both by Laird Barron. Some of these are quite terrifying and made me afraid of the dark as an adult. The Safety of Objects by A M Homes which I have talked about before in another comment. Swamp) Fetus by Poppy Z Brite.
    And any of the short story collections by the late great goddess of sci-fi fantasy and horror, Tanith Lee.
