So this kid was already dying when he left the barrier to chase after dad. His final fall was actually symbolic of him dying I think. And because the isles traps your soul, he doesn't realise that.

It looks like Thresh got him when he slipped and fell at 2:28. The second before, you see Thresh winding up his hook, and then you hear an eerie sound, but never see Thresh throw it. When the guy gets up, it appears to be his soul leaving his dead body, and trying to get away, but now that he's dead, he can't leave. From everything I've seen and noted here, it looks like Thresh got him while he was trying to get back to his feet.
