  • This video shows how I repaired my late model whirlpool refrigerator. I had water dripping from the freezer into the refrigerator compartment. Water freezes on the bottom of the freezer and blocks the drain. Then the water begins to drip into the fridge.

I'm so happy I found this video! I have had a drippy fridge for over a year because I couldn't afford to get a new one. Didn't want to call a repairman because my fridge is so old. Today I googled why this was happening. Found your video and followed your directions on how to disassemble it. I used a flat screwdriver to pick away at the ice though and used a combination of hot water then Rubbing Alcohol to get down the drain tube. My only advice would be that you can take off the front kick guard in front and pull out the drip pan from the front. I'm a 40- something woman who has never fixed an appliance before and because of you, I undertook it. And I feel VICTORIOUS!

Great video! 1) Recommend adding a copper wire to the defrosting drain hole, this is quite involved and unless you want to keep doing this and remove all your frozen food, even once a year seems a little too much, the copper wire will transfer the heat from the defrosting heater to that hole to prevent ice buildup. 2) Recommend figuring out why there's so much ice/ water buildup... usually this is from the fridge doors being warped from years of usage, which causes the seal to not completely seal all the way, if you look on the top of the freezer door usually you can see one side dropping down. This is a easy fix just remove the door and hammer the hinge the correct way to re-align the door.

Why not just let the refrigerator sit out for a longer period of time and let the frozen water in the tube defrost on its own? This of course is assuming you have other refrigeration to put your food into which is my case.

This is a constant issue that I think actually has something more to do with the ice maker. I have this fridge and when I bought my home (with the fridge-ice maker was disconnected) I did not have this issue. I connected it 3 years later and all bell broke loose. Warranty service have fixed and replaced all parts and did what this video is doing multiple times, but never touched that ice maker or the water hose running to water and ice or their components. Still having issue today. F this fridge

Good refresher video. My appliance repair guy showed me how to do this. Another trick he showed me - Pour some Hydrogen Peroxide down the drain tube. In my case - it was the bacteria that was causing the drain to keep getting clogged. This is basic information that should be in every owner's manual. Good job at showing how to do this. Thanks!!!

First off thanks, Mark, for saving me a lot of time in diagnosis and disassembly! Your Whirlpool fridge is almost identical to mine (mine doesn't have the bottom tray). It took me maybe an hour, start to finish, to get the drain unclogged and have it all up and running again. I'll share what i did differently to speed up the process.
First, after shutting down the freezer and fridge, i unloaded the whole freezer into laundry baskets (i had nowhere to keep it all cold so moving quickly was important!), i then plugged the air vents in front of the back panel with paper towels. This kept any further water or ice from leaking down into the fridge (i had cleaned out the entire lower fridge the day before thinking the leak was a one-time occurrence).
After pulling off the rear panel, i chipped away as much surface ice as i could. When i could see the drain hole (and there was still a bit of ice left in the catch channel under the cooling fins), i spooned copious amounts of table salt into the drip channel making sure to put the majority of it around and over the drain. Then i got a hair dryer (a heat gun would work too but be careful with it, they get VERY hot!) and melted the rest of the ice in the channel with the salt on it. Before long the salt water began to eat away at the ice in the drain pipe. I used a bent piece of stiff wire to poke down the pipe to help the warm (not hot!) salt water along. In about 15 mins the drain pipe unclogged and i could scoop up the excess salt. I left a bit of salt in the channel to help keep it from freezing up again right away. I then reinstalled the back panel and pulled the paper towel plugs out of the air vents. Then i wiped out the freezer well with a towel and put all the food back in.
I hope this helps someone out....thanks again Mark!

Thank you, Mark and all who added suggestions. I have this fridge and I used a hairdryer and sponges to melt ice and remove water. I was mostly able to remove the ice in sheets as it loosened from the freezer bottom. I heated up an Allen wrench (which was handy at the time) with the hairdryer and put it on the iced up part in the drainage tube. Once the water started draining, I poured hot water down the drain tube using a small funnel to finish clearing out the ice. The whole process (from emptying the fridge to putting the food back) took me less than two hours.

Brilliant. Each step explained and demonstrated so that this 60 year old woman was able to fix my fridge! Thanks! I used a plastic fork to help dislodge the ice, I’d never use a screwdriver, I’d be too afraid of damaging the unit in some way. Thanks for the tip to be extra careful with the fins and not cross threading the screws. The trickiest part was fiddling with the ice maker and forgetting to match up the spout for the water with the ice maker.

It works! I'm in my 60s, female, and I was able to do this, with some minor adaptations for my size and sheer cowardice. I emptied and defrosted it completely and blew condensed air up the drain pipe a few times. Then I used a funnel and warm water at the back of the freezer and poured it along the edge. It all ran out the formerly blocked drain tube, along with some crud. I poured until it drained clear. (Many of us "grew up" before frost-free refrigerators.) I put a "plastic nondairy creamer tub" under the tube at the back to catch the water. Yippee! Hundred$ saved! (My husband is a musician. Need I say more?) Thank you!

Very helpful video. I went through something like this about 6 years ago. In our case a jar froze and broke and the glass was blocking the drain. We just had a leak again and this video reminded me of what the problem should be. One note: If you can run a wire or something down the drain tube it may clear something stuck in the tube that is NOT ice, like paper or food.

The black tube at the bottom is the defrost heater which melts the ice build up off of the condenser(the thing with all the fins). Get a small piece of bare copper wire and carefully insert it down the drain tube(6 or 12 inches) then wrap it around the defrost heater tube. When it heats up it should melt any build up in the drain as well if there is any.

Next time you do this I would recommend using isopropyl alcohol as a deicer so you don't have to wait as long and deal with the hassle of your warm water getting cold. I had my drain cleared in about 5-10 mins, I also used a screwdriver to chip away what i could and had a shop vac for water extraction. Like he says, be careful with the fins I have a small cut on my hand I didn't noticed until I started to see red smears on the side of the freezer when I reassembled it.

Great Video that was very helpful with this problem. It took me about 15 minutes to resolve after watching this video. I dismantled as in the video and cleaned up the ice and accumulated crumbs. I used a turkey baster to suck out the water in the area by the drain and added very salty hot water with the baster 3 times and heated with a hair dryer for a minute. I used a strong wire to pick out the ice as it melted and ran a wire down the drain all the way down when it cleared. 15 minutes, start to finish.

First of all, thank you Mark for showing my exact Whirlpool model and age (2001)! Perfect. Now, here are a few suggestions:
Tools: 1/4-in socket or nut driver
a thin spatula that will get under the sheet of ice on the bottom of the freezer
a heat gun or hair dryer
a couple feet of plastic tubing
    a funnel
    maybe some duct tape
    hot water
lots of paper towels and sponges
I was a little nervous about taking the freezer apart to get to the ice dam but it was fairly easy with the exception of having to take off the ice maker. Taking the ice maker off was a PITA, putting it back on was worse and I broke the little screw hole on the bottom (fixed it with a washer, but still...). Put the upper right screw in first so you don't drop the ice maker with the lower screw through its little plastic hole. The hardest part was getting the ice maker in place, aligned with the screw holes, space for the plastic electrical connection and the filling spout from the water input line.
Getting the ice rink out of underneath the bottom plate was easy, with the help of a heat gun (a hair dryer would also work). But be careful with the heat as you are dealing with plastic parts that could warp and deform and become useless. Warm it up just enough that you can start breaking the ice into smaller sheets and lifting them out. One you get an edge going, the thin can be used to lift up the ice and dump it in the sink or a bowl. DO NOT use a sharp knife for this.
For the ice in the little catchment tray around the iced over hole, the heat gun is great (again, be careful) and take your time heating, sponging, heating some more and eventually you can life out the ice from the tray. Now all you have to do is deal with the frozen drain.
I used Mark's paper town method for the first little bit, then heated the hole with the heat gun and sucked the melted water into the end of the plastic tube, covered the hole and drained it in the sink. Once the hole is deep enough, use the funnel (I added a little piece of tubing to the funnel so make it easier to pour into, held in place and sealed with some duct tape) and pour the hot water bit by bit into the hole. It will overflow, of course, so clean it up and do it again. Once again suck the meltwater into the end of the tube (don't worry if you get some in your mouth, it's clean) and continue. You will be able to feel that the tubing is going farther down the hole each time you suck the water out.
Pretty soon you will hear the water you pour in to hole start to drain into the tray underneath. Yay!
Here's a hint: when it appears to be clear all the way, pour a measured amount of water in the drain hole, say, half a cup, and then pull out the plastic catch tray underneath and pour that back into your measuring cup. If the return water is about half a cup, you're done and you can start reassembling. Before you put the cardboard back piece back on, vacuum out the dead bugs and cat hair from inside the mechanical parts.
Not counting unpacking the freezer and moving the food to a friend's freezer for the day, the whole thing to about an hour and a half.
    Hope this helps. Good luck!

    • @christopherjames1590
      @christopherjames1590 4 роки тому +1

Hey, I'm a "Bear," too (My wife's pet name for me: "Hey, Bear, will you _____?")
Before I get to your question: Mine iced up again about six months later (six months ago). This time I ordered the little anti-icing probe and installed it. A bit of a rip-off at $12 or so for a little piece of metal. But it appears to be working...so far. I think Andrew Gramsky's comment down below is a good, creative one: Add a little piece of copper wire as a heat transfer device. You just need to transfer some of that heat from the defrosting tube into the opening of drain hole. My only thought is would "a small piece of bare copper wire" be enough? Worth a try. If not, the $12 piece of aluminum appears to be worth it.
Now, regarding leaving the 'fridge pugged in? You really have to unplug it or else you are working against the refrigerators main task of the freezer freezing things. Leaving it plugged in could be an uphill battle and much harder to get the ice out. So yes, it has be be unplugged and all the stuff in the freezer needs to be taken out. The second time it happened, I put all the food in a couple of camping coolers and kept the lids closed. In the hour and a half or so it took me to clean out the hole and install the anti-icing probe, nothing thawed more than very slightly. Everything was still pretty much hard as a rock, even the ice cream. Lacking an extra cooler or two or a friend's freezer, if there's room, move the frozen stuff into the main 'fridge compartment. Not only will it help keep the main compartment cold, the already-cold main compartment will help slow the thawing process of the frozen stuff; sort of a symbiotic relationship!
As for the rest of the 'fridge, the main portion, you don't need to unpack it; just keep the door shut and it will keep everything cold for a long, long time, especially if you move the frozen stuff into the main compartment.
      Good luck! Hope this helps!

    1) Appreciate the realistic looking fridge. For a bit I thought there was a mouse or bat hanging out in the upper left of your freezer, but yeah, no. 2) Dad comments about sharp edges and being careful with the fins are also much appreciated. A few days ago I scraped skin off both hands while cleaning innards of air conditioner. Those fins are thankfully OK. These replacement parts are $$. Suggest that you enlist an OCD buddy to come over and vacuum the entirety of external fridge. It is just overall more efficient, satisfying and for a beer, totally worth it.

Thank you you helped me locate the drain in the freezer. I’ve defrosted my old Whirlpool top freezer and bottom fridge before but never let the drain defrost. I removed all built up ice and then used a screwdriver and help remove the excess ice in the line. Then used my air compressor on the bottom side of the drain line and BAM, a huge ice cork popped out and fridge line is clear. Took the ice to clean the coils, fans and all the shelving.

Thanks for posting this. Ours is a Whirlpool-made Kenmore Elite, a 2001 model. The freezer compartment is the same, except that with ours, the freezer bottom is on tracks and rollers, and slides forward. So there's an extra step to unhook the rolling bottom shelf and pull it out, along with the three rollers, then the base that it hooks into, held down by the two screws in the bottom. Today was the second time having to unclog the drain, the first time being several years ago. I don't remember it taking as long the last time, so I guess it was worse this time.
The things I did differently today were to use a blow dryer to melt the ice buildup (a large block) on the end of the evaporator coil, nearest the icemaker. I also used the paper towel trick to wick water out of the drain.
As it goes of the freezer compartment, the drain line first makes a 90 degree turn toward the back, and then another 90 degree turn to vertical. I used a curved piece of coat hanger wire to *gently* probe the drain line, and that finally broke the remainder of the ice blockage. I can't over stress to *gently* probe the line, because the *last* thing you want to do is poke a hole in the drain line.
And on the icemaker, yes, just loosen the top two screws and completely remove the bottom one. Then, when you reinstall the icemaker, stand it on the front end, plug in the connector, and swing it up into place and hang the icemaker on the top screws. Make sure that everything is routed correctly, including the fill tube coming in. Insert the bottom screw, and then tighten all three.
Anyway, thanks again for the video.

Thank you so much for this tutorial!! I was not able to get a repairman for months because of COVID. So, I fixed the darned thing myself this morning. Took me about an hour since I used a blow dryer to melt the ice. (That's what my repairman used the last time he fixed it.) This refrigerator does this about once every two years, so I'm going to start doing some preventative maintenance, checking it every 6 months for ice. Again, thank you!!

This was a fantastic video! Thanks so much, and so happy I found it before I called a repairman or bought another fridge. Mine is the exact same model, everything was very well explained and easy to follow. I found an easier way to get rid of the water in the drain tube. Instead of using paper towel, which I did initially, I used a syringe and it worked so quickly and at the same time i could feel with the needle point where the ice was. Thanks again! Now can you tell me where I put the two screws for the freezer bottom tray????!!!!!

I used a hair dryer set on high, to accelerate melting the ice, and a plethora of towels to mop up the water. It took about 30 mins to melt & remove the ice mess.
I discovered there was dust/gunk in the drain tube that had caused the blockage to begin with. I cleared the drain tube using a stiff wire. I strongly recommend checking the drain tube is cleared, otherwise, this problem will recur all over again.

no worries. i have an ice maker as well. just take pictures of what it looks like as you are disassembling, if you are worried about how to put it back together. then you've got a reminder of what it looks like. group things together that belong together. if needed, use zip lock baggies to store parts and screws and such that go together. Good luck!

also if you have small hands or narrow plastic spatula and " flutter " the warm water into the drain it will clear faster. moving water creates friction, which creates heat, which works water into drain line faster.

Thanks Mark, this really helped me. I had the same problem with my Whirlpool fridge. I didn't have a spare fridge/freezer that I could store my food in. So, I found a couple of ways to speed up the process. I used a screw driver and hammer to chip away at the initial ice chunks. Once I was able to reach the drain, I had a squeeze bottle with a nozzle that I stuck in there with hot water and that really sped up the process. When I squeezed the bottle it would push the hot water towards the ice, then when I stopped squeezing it would suck the now semi-warm water back into the bottle so I didn't have as much of an issue with the water in the drain line acting like an insulator. I was able to complete this project in about 45 minutes.

Your video was awesome. What took the longest was getting ice out of drain line. The disassembly and reassembly was easy. Just make sure you take rear panel off so you will know the drain is unclogged. Use the paper towel truck to get excess water out of drain as it melts. A turkey baster or similar device would probably work better and faster so you could suck out excess water and then insert got water. Lastly I also used copper wire trick to hopefully keep drain line from refreezing.

Good video. So based on this info. a little bit easier. Shut off the breaker to the fridge. Poor some rubbing alcohol down the drain in the freezer. Do this repeatedly for about 20 minutes. then pour hot water down the drain until the pan overflows on the floor. Done and done. Be sure and catch all the water that will overflow in the fridge like you have already been doing

i've been dealing with the same problem for quite some time myself. two things i can ad is -- you can pour table salt in the drain opening after removing the bulk of the ice. it will melt through fairly quickly, then flush it with clear water.... also, be sure to install a heat probe into the opening which will attach to the defrost element ,,, to keep it from re freezing.
