Like most cats, our last Tabby had super keen hearing and while laying he would look up whenever he sensed something outside. This was enough to prompt us to look outside - it was usually nothing, but also very comforting to know that he was hyperaware of his surroundings.
My brother-in-law passed away a few days ago. My husband took the news really hard. Our cats immediately went to comfort him and stayed with him all night. Usually they don't pay much attention to him, but somehow they knew he was in distress and came to help the only way they knew how. 😭

Ever since I came back from a hospital appointment that left me in a bad way, my older cat that is usually the mean tempered one hasn't left myside. Then a few days ado I had to have my bloods done, and in the end the lady had to use the back of my hand to get any. The moment I yelped, my cat went from curled up on my bed to standing on my waist glaring at the poor woman, then stayed there until she finished. This cat has never acted like this in the nine years we have had her, we were already shocked by her suddenly curling up to me in bed, but then protecting me when I yelped? WHO STOLE MY MEAN ANTISOCIAL CAT AND SWAPPED HER FOR A KIND AND LOVING ONE?!?!
I've had my Tortoiseshell since my daughter was 5 yrsold , my daughter is now 17 and my cat still comforts her, as a small child my cat would always 100% time be able to calm my daughter down when she was crying, and it still works, and my cat still sleeps at my daughter feet, and if a stranger were to get close my cat would be all over them big time just as she would when my daughter was younger!!
Cats can be very protective and territorial. I would happily deal with a barking snarling dog than a hissed up claw packing pissed off 15 pound cat. Back in the 60's we had those big console TVs. When it was on the blink the repairman came to your house. Doors were unlocked, he just came in, fixed it and left. We had a big black dog and a Siamese car, we left instructions on how to handle the dog, who barked but was a sweetie. Mom came home and repairman sitting in truck in the driveway, hadn't gone in yet. Was it the dog mother asked, no mam, it was the cat. See when he opened the door the cat happened to be in the hallway and went into full spit and hiss mode. Now if you have never heard the growl yowl of a Siamese it will scare the crap outta you. That man wasn't about to push his luck going into the house.
