In the olden days of the 1980s when we were training and sparring in California, and fighting in tournaments it was the real deal. What's happening now is not like fighting at all.
Can any wt guys watching this tell me why every single one fights with their hands directly by their sides? Is it a strategic thing or just feels better to kick the way they do with them down because its like every single guy in wt fights this way... I dont get it, not throwing shade btw.
Because in WT most of the kicks are aimed at the body. The chest protector is too wide, even the small of the lower back is an area that can be targeted for points. If you use the kickboxing guard: Yes! It will cover you from headshots and knockouts, but you expose your torso, then your opponent easily connects a double kick (0:26) and already scored 4 points, or just a straight punch to the body and score 1 point.
It's much better to simply avoid the attack than to block it with your hands/arm. Trust me, you take a few of those hard shots and you won't be feeling anything in your arms.
It is better to avoid a kick, than to try to block it. If you can't avoid it, it is better to parry it, than to try to block it. My middle finger on my left hand would agree. It took several months and daily painful manipulations for my middle knuckle to heal from trying to block my instructor's roundouse with an open hand block. It took longer for the swelling to go down and to be able to touch my finger tip to the palm on the same hand without forcing the finger to bend to it.
Avoid kicking is the best way to go in every kickboxing martial arts. A really hard kick in the hands/arms can do a lot of damage, best to avoid If you can or parry with some specific part of the body If theres no time to flee
