    People don’t understand the commitment it takes to drive in the dunes, looks like a good time and a fun run, gotta learn the lines then you can really hammer down. My grandpa had a VW beam buggy so much fun so many memories wish I could go back in time too many SxS in the scenes now a days not a bad thing but I do miss the rail enthusiasts.

      fuckyuashol yup I do. What’s deceiving with a GoPro is that it makes things look flatter than they are. So when you’re going up a dune and don’t know what’s on the other side it’s safer to slow down. Plus I drive like an old lady most of the time and I think that’s why that motor has lasted as long as it has.

    Excellent video. May I ask what kind of camera setup you are using? Sandrail is way safer than a sbs and potentially way faster.

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT

      Thank you! I'm new to this whole thing and I will be making new videos this month showing the restoration of my buggy. The camera is a Gopro Hero 7 black and I just mount is to my buggy in different places. Thanks for your comment and yes I agree that rails are more safe than SXS's. SXS's have better suspension that my buggy and are more reliable but my buggy is wide so it doesn't want to roll as easy. Money makes things fast so it depends how deep your pockets are!

    Seems to me you could go anywhere the SxS goes. Personally, I'd carry a little more RPM, but having never driven a VW, a SxS, or anything in the dunes......maybe I dunno what I'm talking about.

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT
      @MATSHEINSTEDT  4 роки тому +3

      Yup I can go anywhere they go. There's a lot to say about driving skills in the dunes. You don't know whats on the other side of them and sometimes you have shadows that make things sketchy. You're right about the RPM's thing for sure- I baby the car a lot in the first days of the trip to make it last.

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT
      @MATSHEINSTEDT  4 роки тому

      YLFY they do scream and I love the sound they make. An 1835 can do some amazing things and most VW sand rails are under a thousand pounds. If you drive them hard all the time they don’t last long though.

    • @m.behan6
      @m.behan6 4 роки тому

      mats heinstedt yeah we really don't drive it hard. We do most of our driving on dirt with dirt tires, and more than enough horsepower without getting over about 4000 rpm. The only thing bad about it is it has a 110 angle can, which isn't extreme but it has a small dead spot which is just a minor inconvenience. I assume your rail has a 3.88 ratio transaxle?

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT
      @MATSHEINSTEDT  4 роки тому +1

      @@m.behan6 Yes the ring and pinion is a 3.88. Dave Folts built it about 2 years ago and is currently getting rebuilt again by Dave. It has a Rhino aluminum case and weddle gear set. He did a lot of maching for bigger bearings and custom side covers. I popped the reverse gears on the last trip so I'm currently redoing a lot of buggy while the trans is out. My buggy doesn't like choppy sand much- usually gets loaded up and sputters a lot. I has a 2276 but I'm not sure what cam it has. When everything is clean and the sand is smooth it hauls ass!!

      VWs need air for cooling. If you lug them too much it reduces the air flow. Keep the RPMs up to keep air flowing.

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT
      @MATSHEINSTEDT  3 роки тому

      @@michaelmccarthy4615 well I rebuilt the car when Covid started and my driving has improved over the past season or 2. I put a deeper sump on the new motor and a larger crank pulley to get the fan speed up all for more cooling. I’m still learning every trip and plan on going as long as possible!! Thanks for watching my video!

    • @michaelmccarthy4615
      @michaelmccarthy4615 3 роки тому

      @@MATSHEINSTEDT look at a stock 1600 in a car. They have special tin all around the cylinders to provide even and complete air flow. This is to avoid hot spots. There are baffles in a stock dog house. Try to retain the factory designed air flow. Larger motors need to remove even more heat.
      The factory air flow design is very well thought out.

      mats heinstedt just have a built engine, you can build those vw air cooled engines to make 180 hp, and 200 ft lbs of torque. You will own them in the sand drags.

    • @dameg3121
      @dameg3121 4 роки тому +2

    • @MATSHEINSTEDT

      Damien gomez my buggy has smoked a lot of Rzr’s especially at the sand drags. I ride with guys that have Rzr’s, Can-am’s Subaru’s and a few V8 cars. I do fine most of the time but my car definitely needs more maintenance which usually don’t take long. It’s light and quick but the newer stuff does most everything better. Have you seen Chico’s performance build motors? That dude is amazing and makes VW’s with huge power and torque!!!
