My first fully completed playthrough after a few campaigns dropped halfway through was Legendary Maio Ying and I have to agree on them as a good first playthrough. Cathay feels the most "traditional Total War" of most of the factions insofar as its roster and strategic map mechanics go. Spears in front, archers behind, consolidate territory, profit.
My second playthrough of TWW3, and I know he's a DLC but I think really deserves the shoutout, was Taurox, and I highly recommend him for new players wanting an easy combat-focused playthrough. This man is a beast! (no pun intended) An army of minotaurs is an excellent starting position from which to launch your campaign in the game, and not having to worry about territory/economy/upkeep/politics means you can just go out and smash stuff, and win at it! Because all you have to do to win tactical fights as these guys is charge your minotaurs into the enemy front line and watch everything fall apart. Super fun, relaxed campaign that lets you focus on combat without having to know a whole lot else. Confederation is easy too.
Khazrak One-Eye was my first proper campaign and I loved it. No base building. Super fun ambush mechanics. Surrounded by The Empire, take your pick of targets to ravish. Unique race, didn't teach me the whole game, but tackling less at once actually felt like a good thing. Skarbrand is probably a better choice here, but something really drew me to the Beastmen. Edit: Oh yeah, another big factor is not needing to worry about unit upkeep/recruitment costs. Your army number and good units are only limited by your tech, so you never second guess yourself about fielding the maximum number of armies with the best units available. Very much agree with your picks though.

I’ve been working through playing one lord for each race to try out every race to see the ones I like the most and the least. I started a campaign as Gor-rok a couple days ago and I’m only on turn 6 cause of my schedule buts it’s been pretty nice so far
This is a great list, though I personally never played any of these. I started with Norsca because I love the viking theme. It was incredibly difficult as a new player and I absolutely got trashed and restarted so many times until I got the groove of things. It's only with other races/factions that I learned about how the game is fundamentally played. I was really just throwing myself into the deep end for good or ill. Going to try out some of these, despite having 500 hours on WH3, I barely played any race except for Norsca, some Dwarves, Beastmen, and Nurgle.
@dagewastaken7236 playing a race you like and are determined to be good at is a better motivator than any recommendation. Well done for pressing through!
I'm talking here about my own experience. In any case, my approach was to start in Warhammer 2 with VH/VH, still my assertion was that I will fail many times until I get things right. I also played after watching UA-cam/twitch streams of the game, so many of the mechanics ware known to me. So the difficulty was in executing theoretical knowledge I got from watching others playing the game.
@constanza86 I'll still learn a new race on normal to discover the lay of their rules and progression then switch over to legendary... but then again I'm aiming to learn everything to test then convert into guidance for other players. You highlight the test of high difficulty is knowledge of your resources vs their competition which I completely agree with.
Me with 2,000+ hours - finally, a good idea what campaigns I should play first! Jokes aside, killer list. I co-sign all of the recs and have basically recommended these to friends who are picking up the series for the first time
This is exactly the type of video I needed, I've been playing the Iron Dragon guy's campaign in Cathay over the past couple of weeks. I've been conservatively expanding, consciously aware not to expand too quickly and to fight too many wars at once. I was making good progress. Then, all of a sudden, Snitch, Blessed Dread, Chaos Dwarfs and Tzinch faction all attacked me at once within like 5-10 turns. Got so frustrated. Close to scrapping the campaign. It's embarrassing to admit, but I've never fully finished a campaign, as something like this always happens. It feels like there's just enemies everywhere, and I can never overcome fighting everyone at the same time. But this video fills me with hope. I may try the Miao campaign, as you mentioned! Thank you again, subscribed! (Any tips would be very welcomed ☺️)
Appreciate the sub mate. Don't be affraid to restart a campaign. Don't make your goal to 'win' per se, but more to do your best to keep tackling what's in front of you. It's all a game of decision making and knowledge is the best weapon you can bring. Discord is free if you have any questions. Cheers
Tyrion was the guy I first tried this game with (like 6x, it was too hard). Noctilus wound up being my first win. Pirates! Vampires! Cannon wielding colossi! Fun is key for sticking with it. (Love Tyrion now.)
Lokhir Felheart is a super fun campaign that can snowball pretty quickly with proper use of black arks. The only pity is that Karond Kar doesn't always stick around long enough for you to get the dilemma for confederation/sale.
Rakarth is another underrated campaign. Adding random dinosaurs to the druchii is too much fun, and fighting Lizardmen right away is a nice change from most other campaigns.
@justinnelson7357 hammering a race you love is actually a great way to improve and learn the game too. For some, I think it improves their play faster as they have more capacity to consider movement and diplomacy (more advanced elements)
Very solid list. Good job sir. I agree with the choices. Once people learn these, they should go for one of the rush factions. Probably chaos/beastmen, which would teach them rest of the stuff >]
We need more people to join the warhammer 3 discord aswell we get some great pvp campaign games going with that autoresolve quest battle mod... its awesome! 👍
My first game was Realm of Chaos with Kislev. It seemed like Kislev was the obvious choice given the story. It was only hard until after the first rift, but yes it was not easy. Put it this way, my first Immortal Empires campaign seemed really easy by comparison.
I found Miao Ying a bit annoying now, because of 5.2 change having to deal with a bunch of heavily armored Chaos Warriors and Aspiring Champions before you can get any anti-armor. I had to just ignore them and wait for army loss penalty. Not sure if that applies to Normal/Normal tho. I think Zhao Ming would probably be easier. I think Elspeth is also an easier(and more straightforward) empire campaign for people that find Karl overwhelming, but does require DLC.
Definitely worth revisiting. Would like to point out this comment was excellent for pointing out the finer detail of the warriors' armour vs cathay's AP at that stage of the campaign. Well explained!
Best campaign I had was with Helman Ghorst, worst Legendary Lord since Wh1 but in Wh3 he is one of the strongest Lords, if you know how to play him correctly. Also his campaign gives you a nice Zombie apocalypse feeling.
As someone who started playing TW Warhammer (2) in 2024, I get that the Vortex Tyrion campaign is designed as a tutorial but boy did I hate it. Kind of surprised that I sticked with the game after restarting it two times. If like me you're picking the game up now, know that there are better experiences out there.
@deivid.adam- appreciate your comment a lot. I've seen Tyrion turn away more players than brought in by my own experience. For some he's the best intro but I think for just as many he's not the most informative in terms of the game's depth nor showcases the darker side of the coin
@@ElvenPlotArmour for me he was so frickin' confusing. From what I understand the game wants the player to confederate Ulthuan, but the more you try to confederate the longer it takes for the next one and the fact that your "allies" don't lift a finger to help you deal with the Chaos armies that spawn from the rituals really got in my nerves. The only way I was actually able to beat Tyrion's campaign was by going nuclear and declaring war on all High Elves, because by taking all of their territory I was able to make enough money to field 7+ armies and cover all of Ulthuan to fight the Chaos. I doubt that's the intended experience but in the end it worked for me. I liked the high elves as a faction, but I reckon I'll only play them again when I get better in the game and can manage Imrik's campaign.
As someone who started this series by playing skaven I don't think I'd recommend them to beginners, for a couple of reasons. Number 1, is diplomacy is all but useless as everyone *hates* you, even other skaven factions take a while to build positive relations with. Number 2 is their unreliable infantry and leadership. It can lead to new players thinking theyre playing the game wrong when their frontline of clanrats underperforms and routs numerous time, not realizing they are just that crap. Also utilizing weapons teams effectively takes some skill, something even I still suck with.
@novarat4089 essentially I agree with everything you said here. They're a free race for WH2 and those who like tend to love them so I made a recommendation. However, the fundamentals of formations and diplomacy are vital and hard to capture with them, so I agree, it's a harder route than playing humans.
You would be surprised what you can 'game' with any race For example: As Skaven, you can make the HE your allies if you want to. All you have to do is send 1-3 heroes down to perform actions every turn against their enemies for 20-30 turns. This is basically farming reputation, and its VERY effective. Mix this with gifts and negotiating to fight against their enemies for Non-Aggression Pact and Trade and there you go!
New player here. Started with Karl Franz. The most important lesson I learned, was, that dwarfs are not to be trusted! I thought they were my allies. Then decided to abolish diplomacy to settle all grudges and apparently I was in their bad books :( Anyways. Going with Karl Franz once more!
Skarbrand always makes these lists and I gotta say it just doesn't resonate with me. I've tried to play him three times and every time I've struggled with the rush-and-sack nature of his playthrough. Everyone around you hates you so you're always getting attacked from behind, there's no way to safeguard/hold territory because Khornate garrisons might as well not exist at all, but without being able to hold some territory you can't train newer and higher tier units. You're forced to constantly attack because you have no economy to sustain yourself otherwise, which means any unit losses / damage taken is really impactful especially in the early game because you can't really afford to stop attacking to replenish your stack. I must be doing something wrong because I consistently hear he's a good/easy campaign to play but I can never get that snowball rolling on him to the point where you just steamroll across the map. Maybe I need a "Skarbrand first 20 turns" or something lol.
Skarbrand is probablyone of the worst campain for begginers and its not because is hard or not fun, but its bcs it teaches you habbits that are really detremental for most of the other campains in TW3... I started with scarbrand and it was rough unlearn his palystyle in order to play anything that builds economy or diplo....
@ElvenPlotArmour honestly yeah I personally found them easy to learn looking back I could've done things better in it but I'm still learning haven't stopped playing since I got it a month ago
What about making top 10 best campaigns to play? The unique, fun ones that ofer niche mechanics and makes the game more fun. You can even include mods! Or even better, making a top the best factions mod to play! Haven't seen anyone do so and some mods out there are just spectacular like the Champions of Undead, Nagash, Araby. Any mod that adds new LLs will do.
"The cathayan lords are easily the most powerful one-man doomstacks in the game" me: *takes out miao ying with a halfstack of norscan javelin throwers*
Funny yeah but obv there's a huge gap b/w what the player can accomplish versus what the AI can do for powerhouse lords. A lot of the ones he mentioned here (including Skarbrand, probably the strongest lvl 1 combat lord in the game) can be trivialized by a player with 3-4 crossbowmen or a handgun unit and a cannon
@novarat4089 sometimes it takes a bit of work to get there haha. In all seriousness, good dragon Micro can really help avoid ammo and break out of combat into the air again. I have a dragon guide to showcase the movement if that helps. In reality most "1 man armies" require a fair bit of upgrading/investment and knowledge to utilise.
Hope the rework makes Ogre Kingdoms a beginner friendly army. Simple roster and a few directions for both LL's to go, but putting your camp in a poor spot will cripple the game.
Without at doubt they'll be stronger, maybe not necessarily easier. Still, more options should make them easier to play overall so good times are ahead!
I've never been able to bring myself to play Tyrion campaign. I just feel like i would get bored quickly. Only Elf campaign i have interest in is Imrik's.
I learned the game on Thorgrim, and mastered it as Vlad. Hard agree that defensive artillery-based factions are the best way to learn the game at start. Dwarfs have really strong autoresolve, high armor, high leadership, really easy management of "magic" and lord/hero abilities. VCounts are almost the opposite in every single regard but being able to easily access loads of chaff you don't really get attached to means I was able to learn how to micro powerhouse caster lords and cavalry. Easy and early access to the best healing magic in the game definitely helps too
After the prologue with kislev I jumped into Kislevs campaign......I am overwhelmed lol. I cant keep up with territory I take. I dont understand diplomacy and whenever I try to push into new territory I get attrition and my army gets wrecked. I cant keep my devotion up and then the deom gates open up to wreck me. Its very hard 😂
@ElvenPlotArmour lol thanks! I haven't quit but I did take a little break after the struggle there. At like 60 turns I wasnt making enough progress so I decided to start over and Im going to take your advice with Ying
huge question for in-general (i like to play chaos factions or any caster factions) whats ur opinion on using mods to avoid siege battles? I used it when playing skarbrand campaign and it really felt more fun, but also feels like im just plain cheating and not getting the full experience. would u say its better to have it on for all legendary lords, or disable for legendary lords that suck at sieging is acceptable? love ur turn guides
I wouldn't recommend Miao Ying as the first Cathay campaign - I'd recommend Zhao Ming because the campaign is easier. The unique Northern Prvince mechanic you have to handle is annoying for someone who is completely unfamiliar with the game. I will never understand why people enjoy playing as the Empire so much. It is literally my least favoured race in the game.
You aren't the first to feel Zhao is easier. This is why I dedicated a section to him too. I think both are great choices, but I think Miao (when on normal or easy) organically plays out in a more beginner friendly way. Still, I understand the argument and you make a valid point with the province mechanic.
I'm on the fence with Cathay because since the AI buffs in Patch 5.2 their campaigns have become way harder, especially Miao Ying. In fact, I would probably recommend Zhao Ming instead. You are surrounded with very powerful enemies and some are really tough to get rid off (i.e Grimgor, Tamurkhan, Zhatan, Vilitch, ...etc.) On top of that, you need to pay attention to the Great Bastion and defend it when Kurgan armies spawns.
I would argue Khorne is one of the worst Race to start TW WH. Probably the strongest faction in the game but only if you can play. And one of the worst if you can't.
This is a fair take. I do consider the financial cost and getting to try an evil faction as well as a melee style is a good experience to help someone discover their preference. You're absolutely right, that Khorne is more advanced than most give credit.
I came back to give WH III a try again and went with Kholek as I had never played him. When I got to fight the Empire I was shocked how much they had been buffed. Empire knights used to be slow and useless , not anymore. I have pretty much finished with WH now becauise once you know how to play it is not actually a strategy game. It is a build cool armies so you can beat 3 to 1 odds and paint the map.
Tyrion was the guy I first tried this game with (like 6x, it was too hard). Noctilus wound up being my first win. Pirates! Vampires! Cannon wielding colossi! Fun is key for sticking with it. (Love Tyrion now.)
This is what I mean. Tyrion is easy for an experienced player, and I think that detail gets lost a bit. Naval pathfinding is very finicky and can end your campaign. Not to mention every first timer seems to attack the elves next door and start a civil war.
What are YOUR best campaigns for beginners?
I have literally no complaints about the list. Good job man

Karl Franz and Skarbrand for beginners? My God...
Yooo ! 👋
Do you plan on making a video for Lokhir perfect 10 turns ? Would be amaziing
Definitely :)
@@ElvenPlotArmour noice ! Thanks a lot ! I'll be waiting for it ! 🙏
Been playing total war games since medieval 1. I just don't like skarbrand/beastmen. I've tried. Just get bored in less than 10 turns.
For the Algorithm!! 🤖💕
I've never been able to bring myself to play Tyrion campaign. I just feel like i would get bored quickly. Only Elf campaign i have interest in is Imrik's.
Alith Anar is a really fun high elf campaign, as he plays quite differently from the others and isn't as difficult as an Imrik campaign.
@johnd1758 yeah I've tried Imrik like 3 or 4 times. Don't think I've gotten past turn 20 lol even on normal difficulty.
@@garrettmccullough2249 Sounds about for Imrik, lol!
Easy and early access to the best healing magic in the game definitely helps too
Great comment. Thanks!
Sorry for the late reply. Check out my 'first campaign' Miao Ying guide and give that one a go. Hoping you haven't rage quit total war already 😂
@ElvenPlotArmour lol thanks! I haven't quit but I did take a little break after the struggle there. At like 60 turns I wasnt making enough progress so I decided to start over and Im going to take your advice with Ying
huge question for in-general (i like to play chaos factions or any caster factions)
whats ur opinion on using mods to avoid siege battles? I used it when playing skarbrand campaign and it really felt more fun, but also feels like im just plain cheating and not getting the full experience. would u say its better to have it on for all legendary lords, or disable for legendary lords that suck at sieging is acceptable? love ur turn guides
I have 300 hours and i feel like a newb 😂 (in all fairness, i never played any game similiar or even within the Warhammer universe)
There's endless fun in this game, I'm sure you've discovered. Discord is free if you're looking for a place to share strats, etc
You are surrounded with very powerful enemies and some are really tough to get rid off (i.e Grimgor, Tamurkhan, Zhatan, Vilitch, ...etc.)
On top of that, you need to pay attention to the Great Bastion and defend it when Kurgan armies spawns.

@@parryking5478 how about now?
24 races and 96 lords…
100 soon!
Noobs!
Positive comment for the algorithm
Tyrion was the guy I first tried this game with (like 6x, it was too hard). Noctilus wound up being my first win. Pirates! Vampires! Cannon wielding colossi! Fun is key for sticking with it. (Love Tyrion now.)
This is what I mean. Tyrion is easy for an experienced player, and I think that detail gets lost a bit. Naval pathfinding is very finicky and can end your campaign. Not to mention every first timer seems to attack the elves next door and start a civil war.
@@ElvenPlotArmourI need to do another modded campaign with that Caledor faction-THAT is one tough campaign hahaha
