Are aging farmers not passing their farms to their heirs because they are selling the farms and running with the money, or because their heirs flat out don't want the farms?

@@marcus3457 Hi Marcus, It's both, I run Sustainaculture Farm, we are a non profit membership organization in Lynchburg, VA. Our mission is to restore local communities, rescue and restore farms. We meet with aging family farmers with farms of all sizes all around the country and 99% of them want to have their farms continue to be farms in perpetuity. Many have children and grandchildren who don’t want to be farmers, they want to sell the farm however, the majority of buyers are wanting to develop the land into subdivisions or other commercial types of developments. We have also seen a number of big commercial farm entities and foreign buyers that will bid very high and drive the price up making it hard for other farmers and ranchers to expand. We are on a mission to rescue and restore a 1,000 farms in 2025

Taxes inhibit the passing of farm wealth. The farmer is screwed in every way shape and form and he screws himself with stubborn idiocy. My daddy did it this way…is all I ever heard on Illinois farms where I grew up…

I am 60 and desperate to get a place to regenerative farm. I can't afford land on SSI. I inheirited a manufactured home in a 55 and over, but the park owner hates foiliage over 3' high and will not allow anyone to have a garden, feed the birds, etc. Even tho' I live in the snowbelt, at this point, I'd be pretty happy living in a YURT with a basement at this point on some land; raising some chickens, dexters, etc. doing what you do on a small scale, Joel and Sina! I'm disabled but desperately want to raise my own food because I can't afford to buy the food I need or find it at Walmart. I will get well if I can get onto the farm! Not much room in the house here to grow what I need, but I try to do some. Thank you for your channel and insights! They are priceless and will be joining the community to network! Much love-Sheri The Organic Pet Lady

You are not alone, We are developing tiny home farming communities that will be off grid and self-sustaining. Each home will have a greenhouse attached and its own organic garden. Each community will have a central microgreen grow building with a lab for testing the nutritional quality of food, soil and water. The community will have a vermiculture and composting facility and farm for raising and processing animals following biblical stewardship principles. We are also developing a capital platform for funding these communities without mortgages.

*** I suggest doing a "Fishbone" diagram to work out the multiple issues. Then drill down more on the root cause whys again for each.
It may beneficial to show the different revenue streams available in the farming industry and various scales/stages.
What does it look like for someone starting out from various points throughout the process. What do those life stages look like over time? Daily? Weekly? Monthly? Seasonally? Annually?
Do they start a business with chicken tractors on the side while they live in an apartment in a small town or city and work a trade or office job?
Do they start gardening as a hobby at home or get a small land lot? Then work their way up to planting gardens for customers?
Brainstorm some more ideas for scenarios during various scales & stages. Perhaps also consider whether the scenario is for a single person, a small family, a small community, etc. It will effect the viability of the idea. I know I have heard Joel talk about rabbits, chickens, pigs, cows, timber, and various crops. I think it is the difference between a high school diploma and holding various masters degrees. You have to know A LOT to run various portions of "the farm". Can you repair the machinery if it breaks down [time & skill] or is that a cost?
Most of the farmers I know have multiple jobs [trades & office jobs with decent pay and regular hours or part-time work/gigs they can pick up when needed/seasonal] AND THE FARM & all the everyday chores on top of that. They are busy, busy, busy, knowledgeable people. There are no sick days, vacation time, or paid days off for them [from the farm]. Most of their kids grew up seeing that and do not want that "overworked and underpaid" life. Many things to consider.

I really don’t think that’s it. I’d do it in a second, but there are so many barriers to entry, monopolies on the supply chain, and too much red tape on how you’re able to get your product to market.

Jordan, with the farm builder channel says he needs 10x working capital to make a basic salary…500k in capital investment and cash flow to create a 50k per year job…terrible numbers for working 12 hour days for a little above minimum wage. Jordan’s son asks him “hey dad why are we brokies?”to my knowledge he is Joel’s only -scaled to produce- student with “success”?
