- How to play Dungeons & Dragons Solo - Episode 3 - Dungeon Generation? is the third video in a video series dedicated to exploring how to play dungeons and dragons solo (by yourself) using the Mentzer/BECMI Basic D&D rules. In this episode I begin to generate my first dungeon using the Solo Dungeon Adventures article written by Gary Gygax for the Strategic Review magazine published in spring of 1975. I discuss time tracking, and how to incorporate some of the random tables from the BECMI rulebooks. This is an old school revival (OSR) of the BECMI D&D rules. Between the music, your accent and tone, the handwritten notebooks, your talking about stationary to use, old school graph drawn dungeons, the nostalgia of D&D BECMI .....
I feel like I'm watching a solo D&D program made by Wes Anderson. I keep waiting for Owen Wilson and Richard Attenborough to show up at your door.
I don't know what to make of all this. It's educational, D&D themed, and super relaxing.
Keep making these. They are very enjoyable and fun.
i guess im asking randomly but does anybody know a trick to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Uriah Eric I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Uriah Eric it worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy:D
Thank you so much, you saved my account !
@Kai Ramon You are welcome :D
I agree Chris. Tom has found a niche I thoroughly enjoy. Thank you Tom!
The biggest problem I can see with dice-generated dungeons is the proverbial Schrodinger's Ogre: whether you go North, East, South, or West, you are going to find the same room and discover or meet the same thing. I got around it in the '80s by using a computer to generate the dungeon first, but that doesn't work with pen & paper. With cards perhaps? - drawing a set of cards per exit: when you choose an exit you choose that set of cards. But I don’t have a working example yet.
I like the music very much, Tom!
Thank you for this excelent series of videos. Keep up the good work.
Love your substitution of the magic tables from the Basic Set. A problem with the original version tables are that they can give overpowering items. The Basic rules include more level appropriate options.
Nice use of thematic art!
I'm actually playing an OD&D campaign at the moment so it will be interesting to see if I run into any issues with the magic tables :D
This is so awesome! Thanks for sharing! Michael
Great work. Thanks for breaking everything down like this. I have wanted to start this for a while but was overwhelmed by all the options out there. This is such a good starting point.
No problem. Feel free to let me know in comments any questions you have
These videos are great. I bought this box set about 30 years ago and it was my introduction into RPG and later more forms of table top games. Great trip down memory lane
I’m really glad you enjoyed it. I love the red box set it’s so nostalgic. Thanks for checking out the series, I’m hoping to expand on this channel a lot more over the coming months.
Yes! I'm so happy I have the books still even though I think the Basic box itself fell apart long ago.
Thanks for this wonderful video and the linked pdf! Always fun to see the Mentzer Basic being used as that's what I started with. I have a little solo game I just started in the Dolmenwood setting now on Kickstarter and I've been scratching my head a bit trying to create a small (perhaps..?) dungeon.
I'm really liking this. Always had a soft spot for the old Basic D&D and it's probably my favourite system of all the different editions of D&D. That or AD&D, but I'm sort of leaning towards the Basic. Never really thought about the possibility of running a solo game using the old rules even if they're very well suited for it, being so simple and having roots firmly in dungeon crawling more so than character background driven plot heavy story stuff. Not that you couldn't come up with a couple of pages worth of background and some sort of grand narrative for your character, but that was hardly the point back then. Good stuff!
Thanks :) I agree that the older versions from original through to AD&D are great for solo because they have very specific ideas for dungeon crawling. Can easily use these to run a solo game and the spirit of the game really didn't seem so concerned with the narrative or the background of the PC's.
I really enjoyed the video, keep up the good work on the series.
I downloaded your Dungeon Generator document, and noticed you have the same error in it as the original from The Strategic Review - Table 1: Periodic Checks has no “11-13” result. I have inferred that it should direct you to the “Turns” table, since otherwise that table would never come up.
Thank you so much, I was so confused😅
1974 was actually the first year for solo DnD available to the public. Dave Arneson had rules for solo play that included DnD dungeon generation, and I am curious if they influenced Gygax, or he just published them after buying out Dave. But playing in digital form or pen and paper can be fun. In fact, "DnD" was the name of the video game made in Southern Illinois University. It was the first video game to use "Boss Battles" and no such thing really existed in DnD before - though of course some battles were more formidible. The dungeon was open-ended but not procedurally generated. you can play the original solo computer based DnD on cyber1.org
I have a chromebook that is for my solo adventures and the world they create. If my writing was NEARLY as nice looking and classy as yours, I might be more interested in using pen and paper. Have fun, because for me, this is incredibly nostaligic.
Oooo. I’d be interesting in seeing what Dave Arneson produced in 1974. Thanks for the info that’s really interesting. I think I played a bit of the dnd game years ago possibly on that link you shared. I’ve watched a few UA-cam videos about it too. Very very interesting stuff. What programs/tools do you use when you play on your MacBook? Haha thanks for the compliment on my handwriting :D
@@SoloDungeonCrawler Actually Roll20 has a great BECMI character sheet, and it is browser based. I have not used that but I do use excel. I am working on a new file to hole everything to pull much of what is needed into character sheets based on formulas. I also can make rollers but prefer physical dice. I tend to run four PCs and use a different set for each, and a set as DM. Even if I use the d6'd or others for another PC or NPC, I never use that d20 for the other PCs until it dies or is completely retired. That is tradition from the tables I played from my youth. 1 pc = 1 d20. 1d20 = 1pc.
@@SoloDungeonCrawler nagorascorner.blogspot.com/2015/01/what-dave-did-next-dungeons.html?m=1 this details someone applying Arneson's method and adopting it to 5e. Mostly he did it to find the level of monsters in a room if it had any, and he would roll on level charts. A quadrant of a dungeon floor would be rolled to see how many rooms it had.
Charles Humphries thanks I’ll be sure to check that out!
Thanks for another upload mate. Very interesting.
No problem. Hope you enjoyed it.
I'm really loving this series so far! I can't wait to watch your adventures and to start my own!
Let me know how it goes when you start your own!
Great video! Keep sharing content like this!
Thank you! Will do!
I love your Videos! They are So helpfull specily in the Covid Pandemic! Thank you so much🙏
Please stay save
I don't know if I'd have started if it wasn't for the covid pandemic!
This is very helpfull , thanknyou.
I'll be interested to see how the 'wilderness' is generated.
No edition has a better and more comprehensive set of wilderness rules than BECMI. TM1(Western /Country Trailmaps) and TM2 (Eastern Country Trailmaps) in the Known World help a lot by providing the needed rules for weather, to combine with the rules in Cyclopedia.
Thanks Charles. I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of BECMI wilderness rules so I hope to tap into this one day to develop my solo rule system further. Thanks for contributing.
@@brightcrazystar93hello Charles. Robin created some great material based on the books you mentioned (TM1, TM2) and the Rules Cyclopedia. It's available in the Vaults of Pandius.
Great chatting with you.
Cheers,
V
cheers this is great good pace
Thanks Jamie. I’m glad you like it :)
How do you determine “specials” and the treasure for a monster in a room?
Are we confusing turns and rounds? Searching a 10x10 area for doors is one turn aka ten minutes. A round is one minute. Are you altering things for your specific system?
Probably an oversight on my part! However I think most tasks should be adjudicated depending on the context. As a rule of thumb I stick to 1 turn for a secret door search if it is thorough. But something like tapping on the walls with a wooden pole in a 10 x 10 area, checking for hollow sections shouldn't take so long. I think a 1 minute round would be adequate for this.
Have you ever played the latest rules solo?
Hi Colaris. I’ve had a go but not a proper I’m depth go. I prefer the simplicity of the old school rules. I’ve played a bit of 5e as a group though and it’s a great system. The dungeon masters guide also has some great tables for rolling up random dungeons
Which music is this?
I'd like to know as well, it's pretty good for background music.
These early videos if I recall the music was from either the Microsoft Windows Video Editor or the video editor on an iPhone :D
How do you determine “specials” and the treasure for a monster in a room?
Hi Brennan.
Thanks for asking.
If you check the description there is a link to a supporting blog article which includes a PDF of the Dungeon Generator. In regards to specials the PDF states "This is an opportunity to have a willing person indicate the room contents for you. An exchange of special rooms could be done via social media. Alternatively you could roll up a room from a table, set of tables or any other desired method from another solo role playing resource. Possibilities for generating special rooms are endless." The room can also be empty if you have no desired method of generating a special room. In Gary Gygax's original work he proposed an exchange of sealed envelopes between friends. I have included a link to Strategic Review no.1 which contains the original work.
In regards to generating treasure see Table 5E in the Dungeon Generator PDF.
I hope that helps.
