- Mitchell has sent me some Cork Bark Mini Jade cuttings off of a tree that came from Frank Yee's collection! The cutting are a variety of Portulacaria afra that get a very corky bark as they get older.
Today I'm also pruning some of my younger trees, my Amur Maples, Elms, Black Locust, Zelkova, Red Maples, Nightshade Vine and my Natal Ficus.
Thanks to Mitchell for the cool box of goodies today!!! Check out his portfolio here...

I wanna see the cork jades now 🙏
Thank you for showing this techniques of developing bonsai/growing trees, very inspiring.
If you get time look at all The trees have own playlist on his channel that go years back on The Old trees
Nice to some of the less glamorous trees. Thats the type of work you don't normally see but is actually more relevant to most people's trees I think.
Nice work on those saplings. It’s interesting to see your thought process while developing younger trees. Keep growing. Thanks
Nigel, those Portulacarias will root in no time flat if you put the bottom inch or so in water. Just might be useful if they drag their feet a bit!
You'll have some ripper trees soon. Love your channel
Hi Nigel, you're very lucky to have these rare cuttings, I am sure nobody could take care of them better than you
Great gifts from Mitchell.
I think your ficus branches will take root. Ficus is very easy to plant by cuttings. Sometimes ficus leaves also take root🙂🌳
Love this format. Many of us could benefit from learning good daily care practices.
20:45 what a beauty already!
Neat to see young starter trees, then compare to older trees as they progress.
Hello, can we see an update on the cork bark?
thank you
I was surprised to see "Amur maple" since there's Amur river in my native Amur region, and it seems like this species of maple is from my place indeed. Really exciting
That elmtree at 20:00 has huge potential!
Thanks, Nigel!
I hope the jade cuttings takes, glad you misted them, I am sure they can use the humidity. The weather has been rainforest like lately which will help with humidity for those cuttings
When is your new greenhouse coming
I live in Selb, in Upper Franconia, Bavaria. And if I hear your weather conditions I think they are familiar with ours. Thank you for your video. Greetings from Germany 🤩
It is exciting to see the seeds germinating. That mystery seed/seedling look like Paper mulberry or Broussonetia papyrifera.
Today in the Bonsai Zone, everything gets pruned except Nigel’s hair 🤪. Nigel, you are already so popular - but once the cork bark jade starts growing, you will reach new heights of popularity, with everyone lining up to get cuttings from you! (Including me 😄) Great updates, thanks as always! 👍
If I'm not off too much, the tree at 25:00 is a willow. As the birches do, the willows will grow their first few years of growth with very big leaves. That way they gain more strenght to the roots in the future. Not sure tho, but I've seen it a lot in nature.
10:12 those ones look like Aeonium sp they are native here in the Canary islands in the other side of the Atlantic
Good to see a seed update.
The end of Many of the latest uploads have updates in The end
Best damn nightshade bonsai on the planet, guaranteed!
Best damn comment about a nightshade bonsai on the internet, guaranteed!
Hey Nigel, the app for identifying plants on my phone suggests your mystery plant is a Velvetleaf, a species of Indian mallow.
Thanks Charles, it does look like that!!
Hello Charles! Can you share the name of your app, if you don't mind? Thanks. :)
Hello Nigel sir, soil in big seed tray looks very diffrent, it's very black in color compared to soil in other pots. your soil mix still remains same (50 %perlite & 50%safe t sorb) or its changed ??
His seed trays sometimes get some compost mixed in
Wish it was raining here in California
I'll try and send some your way! We have a big thunderstorm coming tonight!
Nigel what you think how long your soil hold the water ? Now is 30'C how long you can no watering?
If you ever get big frank yee port cuttings is there anyway you would consider seedling them Nigel? Ive been looking for it for years in europe with no luck. Im getting desperate
Any updates on the Corks?
How many bonsai trees would you suggest a beginner have? I have 12, one day I hope I can have a permanent spot for them.
Watering burnout is becoming real to me with too many trees and I have to hand water
Once you get the hang of it, you will never have enough bonsai!! Right now just concentrate on the right species and the right techniques!!
It's never enough 😄
@@Bearbok true. Especially if you have to be away for a while and find someone who can water the way you do it. Nightmare
I am a beginner and I have about 50 ... It totally depends on u and what you want, as long as you have the time for them :)
I have heard you say it so many time by now so I have to ask. You say you will ad 'soil' and then you ad stones. I know plants grows fine in stones but why are you calling gravel 'soil'? Am I missing something? -kasper
You grow so many different types of ficus, I wonder why you like the natal fig so much. Is it better than microcarpa for bonsai?
I think it is the easiest tree for growing aerial roots and the the leaves can be reduced really well. It has a nice texture on the trunk and is a good grower under many different conditions. The leaves don't look like a typical Ficus leaf, so they are a little more special.
@@TheBonsaiZone thanks, now I want one!
@@GreenhornBonsai me too!
Hi...
Can you please share your soil composition.. What all do u add a d In what ratio? It would be really helpful!!
I second this. Live in the same region and I would love to know what Nigel uses for soil.
Please do a update video !!
Dear Nigel, if you have time could you please do a video on pots and training pots? I attempted to grab some from Amazon... The plastic was so flimsy :(
A bit of Irish weather in Canada 😅
Wher are your greenhouses?
Black locust in my area is sometimes called acacia, even it is not a real acacia (in fact it is Robinia pseudoacacia), so you can grow it in some African style, like african acacia.
Whats the soil you use sir?
I LOVE DANDY-LIONS!
Hey Nigel! How’s the lithops doing? Haven’t seen em in the background anywhere yet!
They didn't make it, I had them in the plant room and they never got going and eventually shriveled up. I think my plant room was too cool and not enough light maybe? The tiny pencil cactus are doing really well, they too had a rough start, buy now they are growing and are nice and green. It's too bad, the pictures of them in flower are amazing.
@@TheBonsaiZone aww shucks. I’ll have to try and send some more around spring of 2022 then! They really do produce some beautiful flowers and mines have been relatively low maintenance! We’ll try again!
@@Werd2jaH Thanks so much, I feel bad they didn't survive.
@@TheBonsaiZone it’s ok! Hopefully they’ll thrive this next time!
@@TheBonsaiZone actually we still have some more warm days ahead, look out for some in your PO Box around August 27th! :)
No update yet did the cutting take ? ( my cuttings aren’t :( please update !
Yes, the trees are doing well!!
Lucky you
This jade and The normal jade you can spray rain water on em if dry and The jade Will take in water evin if it have no roots
I'd like to see how these are doing after a year. 🤔🤔
Updates will be coming!!
From small 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
👌👌👌...!!!
why it is so hard to find some cork bark jade in europe?
They come from Africa, it should be easier to get them than here in North America!
Hi Mr
How can I buy small trees or cutting of a portucalaria Afra cork bark (frank) ?
Do you know any contact please
My son dream about having one please
I’m from Montréal, Canada
NIgel; have you ever heard of a Jerusalem cherry?
Hey Nigel, would appreciate it if you send me some cuttings of cork bark jade . Here in India its almost impossible to find one . It would really make me happy. Always wanted one but couldnt find here any and to import it from US its very expensive
👍
Hello there. Please help. Soil is getting rotten on top. Looks like waith small grass. Help
Nice ur FOIST!!
A Foist for Arnis, it's best to change your soil, hose off the old soil and weeds and replace it with with weed free soil.
come my friend watch your video
What is the reasoning behind NOT watering the cuttings? It seems counter intuitive.
Portulacaria Afra (and most other succulents I think) don't like water immediately. You also let a cutting dry out about a week before putting it into soil. Just very different from trees, I think it's because their water storaging is very different
It is just a thing ppl do to jade but i water my cuttings One hour after cuting i never lost any but if no roots no need/reson to water you just spray em
Is that weed?
Mr. Nigel, you have completely stopped responding to comments. it loses all interest in your video. before your videos were more lively, interesting. it was interesting to communicate. now it is lost.
Hello Vadym, I'm finding it hard to answer all the comments, I spent about 6 hours the other day and I hardly made a dent in them! I realize it is important, but with the volume of comments, it's very hard to respond to them all and also continue to make videos every day or every other day. I hope you understand.
@@TheBonsaiZone, thanks. I understending.
