Catching a Years Supply of Dog Team Fish and Rafting Them to the Village for Winter - Stan Zuray

  • Every year at the end of a summer and fall of fishing for food for the family, the poorer quality late fall chum salmon that move up the Yukon River are fished for dog food by the people along the river that still use dog teams. The run at that time is often plentiful enough that one's fishing takes place in a couple of days to a week. Nets and fishwheels are used. That short period of fishing supplies almost an entire 3 seasons of food for ones team of dogs. Video is mostly narrated and lots of talk about the fish and lifestyle.

Don’t let people that talk bad about your lifestyle bother you. They complain about “murdering” animals for food then think they’re food miraculously grows in little packages in the grocery stores. Or grip about harvesting trees and live in homes built with wood or not give a second thought to using paper just to throw away after they are done with it. They don’t understand that smart use of a resource by ethical outdoorsmen do more to help the resources then they could ever hope to do. I’m from Texas, and I know the North American model where the purchase or outdoor supplies and licensing goes to help and protect these resources, when all they want to do is take a walk on some weekends and look at all the things the outdoor people cherish and actually help, then complain because we actually utilize the resource. Stan I love watching your way of life. And enjoy how you explain things. Keep on keeping on, best wishes and thank you for your continued efforts to protect our resources. God bless you.

Some get away. If you look at a sonar you see about 30 go by right under the wheel for every one you catch. One day in 2005 there were 100,000 that went past the wheel and nets in that 24 hours.

Crap to the non-sayers. I think that you and your family are AWESOME smart, talented and sincere. You don't find that kind of sentiment much anymore.
I am 70 and I grew up extremely poor. My dad left my mom with 4 kids and not much support from him. She worked as a Nurse's Aid making .75 cents an hour. Us kids got shoes and coats from a big box in the Principals office.
So I know poor. My kids get on to me why I keep so much food on hand when it is only me. Well I live south of Roswell, NM in the desert mostly. 4 years ago the TV weather, radio, etc. Announced we were going to be right in the way of a blizzard. Ya'll have bad weather conditions but we rarely even have snow.
So I went to town and got a big load of water, dog food, and everything I could think of. My girls were kinda laughing at me and people in town were la la la - then the snow started, then the wind - then a lot of wind and a lot of snow. I did great. The people in town had to call for help and have foid delivered. No one came to make us a path out here for 5 days and no one gave us numbers to call. Luckily the electricity for heat was not affected.
I could not get my car out of the driveway due to a 6 foot drift where you couldn't tell there was a vehicle. After the huge blizzard it rained a little that froze and a the snow drifts turned into big frozen icebergs.
Several people had to be transported to hospital fir exhaustion from trying to dig out and one person had a heart attack and died.
So I understand being prepared. If there was an emergency on you or Joey or any family or good friends needed help and their snow mobiles or four wheelers couldn't start or for whatever reason, you would have your lifeline of your dogs who though they are dogs - they are also extended family and need to be taken care of.
Those naysayers have probably had a bad day in their life and do not know that prevention is what you and other men and women do.
I used to faithfully watch the show on TV but I decided I'd had enough of paying for commercials and only have WiFi now. Good luck to you and yours, Betty.
    AWESOME JUST AWESOME

Thanks Stan for a tid-pit of your way of life, love that fish wheel. I come from a small fishing village on the northeastern part of Nova Scotia Canada . My entire family were fisherman going back hundreds of years, when I was just a kid the harbour was full of fishing boats now there's two. So I know how you feel about losing a way of life, with the old timers gone and put to rest and with government regulations the way they are there very, very few young people getting into the fishery. All the best Stan !

Stan I enjoy watching and learning about the different life styles and cultures of those that reside in different areas. The problem with commercial fishing is they have become so good at what they do with changes to technology and bigger boats that you're 100% right, they can deplete runs. But it seems things other than the obvious get blamed when fish runs become depleted. I really enjoy watching and learning about different life styles and cultures of folks. Keep up the great videos.

Another great video sir! Both my boys and myself were glued to every second, fish, and word! We were saying get a close up on their teeth! Both boys were amazed with the big male that was late in it's spawn cycle and all the coloration and bars it had. They were both saying how effortless you made the tossing of each fish look when moving to each stage of the handling process you had set up. I plan on taking a weekend trip up to Michigan to a place where we can catch some land locked salmon. I hope they can experience a similar sized fish that you are so accustomed to handling with ease! You should see their eyes light up when each fish you picked up seemed to just get bigger and bigger. Thank you again.

Great video Stan . We have a native eel in New Zealand that has an interesting life cycle. The eels, called long fin eels, arrive in New Zealand as larvae from the pacific islands near Tonga , which is 1500 miles away . The baby eels hatch and swim up the streams of New Zealand and live most of their lives there. They can reach up to 2.0 metres long and weigh up to 80 pounds. They can live for up to 80 years. Just before they die they swim back down the streams and out to sea and return to the waters around Tonga where they breed and die , the fertilised larvae floating back down with the currents to New Zealand to complete the life cycle.!( This species of eel is only found in New Zealand not in the pacific islands!)

The king salmon run however was run into the ground and that is where the confusion lies. There was big commercial fishing - like more than half the run numbers taken commercially using nets that took mostly the largest king. We are still dealing with that problem. But these are fall chum and never had that much commercial interest. Commercial markets are being developed on them however and this year about half the run was taken just to be sold. That is the way of the world. When the run crashes the powers that be will be sure to blame the subsistence people who live along the river and make regulations against our fishing and never mention commercial markets.

Alaska is a little more harsh than Florida. It tends to weed out those that complain for complainings sake rather quickly, I also don't see a mass influx moving up here any time soon. Generally, if people come up here, it's because they appreciate our resources and want to use them. With use, comes the necessity to preserve the resource, and AKDFG spends a good amount of time on educating the public. The weather and things one must do to live even somewhat like this, tends to put things into perspective

I'd like to be there pitching in Joe. Back in the seventies it was very interesting learning the lifestyle. May all of you prosper and keep healthy.
