This music is fabulous in harmony and rare, given the instrument used as a soloist (usually the violin instead of the viola).The melody is of magnificent elegance and sublime in its incredible beauty. He is an amazing composer who has produced wonderful music. The soloist is magnificent not only for the sensibility he performs the theme but also for the sound he takes from the instrument. The orchestra and its direction are superb. Viva Hummel and his outstanding musical talent. The recording is remarkable and gives us unforgettable moments of pleasure.
I heard this on the Ernst Wallfisch recording in 1974 and started introducing it all through out my home state of Kentucky, and at Cincinnati Conservatory, the Sewanne, Tennessee Summer Music Institute and then at Tanglewood. I was 15 years old. I also introduced the Michael Haydn Concerto for viola and harpsichord / organ then. I introduced it to Mrs. Virginia Schneider, my teacher, the viola instructor of U of L and head of the Suzuki Department there and the Principal Violist of the Louisville Orchestra.

I found this because I am currently learning this piece, and I will definitely be listening to this again. My only problem is of how I will be able to sound half as great as the violist playing the solo :(

Anybody other then myself who started singing, aloud, the words to Mozart's operas that Hummel quoted? You can do this at home, although not in a concert hall.
Important point: this piece isn't called "Fantasie;" It's called "Potpourri." The "Fantasie" version was published about eighty years later, long after Hummel died, and it cuts about twelve minutes from the piece, as well as most of the instruments from the orchestra. I'm not sure why the publisher thought it would be a good idea to eviscerate a composer's piece and give it a different title.

We have to notice that's a potpourri and Hummel uses themes of W.A. Mozart and other composers. Tchaikovsky also wrote "Mozartiana"! It doesn't remove the pleasure of listening.

Un grandisimo compositor. Aprendió directamente de Mozart y otros, fué contemporaneo de Beethoven e influyó muchisimo a Chopin, quien adquirió su "nuevo" sonido en los conciertos de piano. El ser humano es de polos, no entiende de tonalidades y en cuanto un Mozart, Beethoven o Bach nos aplastan, todos los demás desaparecen. Pero ahi siguen. El tiempo pone a cada uno en su sitio.
No me gusta esta versión de la fantasía no parece del periodo clásico, todos los vibratos son románticos y de la misma intensidad y volumen... no noto diferencia entre el grave del inicio y el andantino con moto... en mi modesta opinión plana y en una misma línea

the version you're playing is probably called "Fantasie," this is the Potpourri. The Fantasie is an excerpt essentially of the Potpourri.

yeah, Hummel was a student of Mozart for a time and it was typical for people of that era to compose fantasies based on popular opera tunes
