I remember a few years ago I spent quite a lot of time trying to find ways to run ps2 games on the go, and now a pretty cheap device can do it. Really amazing how handhels and emulators evolved during the years.

@@boccia2409 honestly, I settled with my phone and a telescopic controller for value reasons.
Spending a little more when I got my phone, now I have a nice emulation machine that serves for photos and overall usage as well.
As for handhelds, unfortunately I'm pretty outdated. If I was looking for a handheld though, I would probably look on UA-cam AND on some sort of emulation or handhelds subreddit. People are very active on those.

Thanks for giving what I would call an a+ review. It's nice to see someone give their own opinion on what they like and don't like. When most people giving reviews are just typically talking about the positive. Almost like they are all given the same talking points that they all need to talk about.
i think the worst thing for a reviewer is to try and be "objective", like, i don't even care if a reviewer _loathes_ Baldur's Gate III because "the main menu is too drab", if that detracts from their experience enough to be noteworthy i want to hear it
@@Retrofire-47 I can agree with that. I just really dislike it when a review seems like it's nothing more than just hitting a few key talking points about an items key features. When what determines if I purchase something is going to be if I can tolerate the negative and still be able to enjoy the item.

I'm hyped for the upcoming Orange Pi handheld. RK3588S in a likely $200-250 device would be fantastic; would absolutely crap on the Odin avalibility wise too (as Orange Pi offically sells on Amazon so the handheld might show up on Amazon with Prime shipping).

@@soakedmovie9231 like the rgb10MAX3 but it plays ps2 and GameCube as good as or better then the pocket3+ /405m except ...it doesn't just have Android, but also linux! Which rly makes it feel like a actual handheld and not just a phone with a controller attached.
Another upgrade from the RGB10MAX3 would be the stuff u expect a handheld to have in 2023 like a hd screen which gets used for upscaling games to look real nice and shinny, and a touchscreen Bluetooth wifi mini-HDMI-out stuff what most $100 or more handhelds already have but rgb10MAX3 doesnt.
Is this the only Linux handheld that does 3DS and PS2?
looking forward to the day we can get a reasonably sized handheld which just blasts through PS2 games, and maybe even supports some PS3 games. I love my steam deck but that thing is really for travel and not just like one off waiting for food moments.
You can kinda do that with a really small but powerful phone like the Zenfone 8 and a controller, but it can get pretty expensive depending on where you live.

I use my Google Pixel 7 with an XBOX controller and it runs most PS2 games very well. PSP emulation mostly even at 4k.

3DS emulation is the one thing that's keeping me holding onto my modded 3DS at this point. My sweet spot would be a device that can run all my Pokémon games from GB to 3DS smoothly, can handle up to PS2 emulation reasonably well and fits in my pocket. Still waiting for something to tick all those boxes. This could have been it, but like you said, too many game breaking issues.
Even with the issues you outlined, I think for me personally, this hits all the things im looking for in a portable emulator. For the price, I think I might pick one up soon. My current emulator (original pocket go) no longer has a working reset/menu button so im working with jank right now

Feels to me like this thing is better as a benchmark for how the next round of devices need to perform and at what price point than it is a viable device itself.

Great video. I watched the first video; but, I've forgotten if the optional Android build had the screen tearing issues too. I remember it not being as slick aesthetically as JELOS and not having an ability to access the Android nav buttons (no touch screen and no hardware buttons) would be manageable, if a pain. However; if the screen looks better and if certain games like Mario Galaxy play better then it might be worth dealing with. As for me; I've got a nice telescoping controller already so if I wanted a separate handheld I'd put the $120 this commands towards a blacklisted used S20FE off American eBay.

This Handheld REALLY needed WiFi, Bluetooth, and a Touchscreen. It's even more sad because the JELOS team even got Touchscreen controls working on their latest builds.
For a budget handheld they need to cut corners in one way or another.

@@nach0x touchscreen? Sure. But there are plenty of similar performing SoCs they could have gone with that support WiFi and Bluetooth that would have cost them a similar amount per unit.
im sure that there is a vsync flag in the display manager config that can easily be added during production or the user can enable, even with the issues, id say this looks great for a hundred bucks
Glad to see these handhelds are getting powerful enough to run >PS2 era games. Next upgrades I’d like to see would be touch screen and a good HD audio DAC. Like if Anbernic teamed up with an audiophile company like FiiO. Would like to play Wind Walker HD in high quality surround sound with my studio headphones.

Just use a external amp dac or a dongle dac, giving them a good hi res dac would make them expensive and would make the battery life not good.

Realistically, given the age of chipsets like the snapdragon 845, and other similar performing SoCs, we should be able to get full speed GameCube at or under $200... but we are just not quite there yet seemingly.
You can get full speed GC and PS2 emulation from a Snapdragon 855. It's what I'm using. Wii is a bit iffy though, while I can get a 2x or 3x res on mUrasama, The Last Story isn't running entirely perfectly.
That sleep issue is something I noticed on my RG351M as well.
It will go to sleep but then you have to press the power button a few times to get it to turn on.
And even then, the controls will be locked out as if it's still asleep while the game continues playing.
I'm wondering if it's quirk of the OS itself and not the devices, since it's primarily occurred on EmuElec and its derivatives.
Hey Taki, how about you review the Anbernic RG505 with Gamma OS installed? I heard that it fixed the screen sharpening issue while also giving you a better experience with PS2 emulation. Just a suggestion.
Has too many problems so far imo. I have a Steam Deck already for PS2, 3DS and GameCube but as soon as a cheap and small handheld can play all of them perfectly, I'll grab it. We are not there yet.
Pretty much. There's never going to be a 'best time' for these handhelds, because they're constantly being revised. So it's better to set your own threshold. For me, it's once they're powerful enough to reliably handle all the pre-switch handhelds.
I focus on that particular subset because portable games tend to also designed for easy on the go gameplay, which is the whole point of one of these systems.

Yep. As much as I love my steam deck, it stays at home on my couch 99% of the time. Even when I travel I don't want to take it with me because it feels cumbersome, not to mention it draws a lot of attention. I'd love something with a smaller form factor. But I hate that this doesn't have a good sleep function. That's one thing about the steam deck that I love, I can press the sleep button and come back 2 days later to pick up right where I left off@@bassram3337
With last Jelos update this handheld is in on the right path. Only better stability on newer systems and working HDMI port to became a top device.
I love rgb10max2. My only gripe is not having 6 buttons in the front, due to issues with arthritis shoulder buttons are a bit rough for me to use. I'll be waiting to get this one. Great review!
If the issues are resolved this looks like a nifty little device. It even kinda looks like a retro TV with the buttons below the screen lol.

I'm kinda convinced that the ideal 'spherical cow' retro handheld is going to conform to a twin screen 2DS-like folding form factor. The DS line is simply too ubiquitous and the second screen could be used for emulator menus in every other system or to stand for special controls like the Vita's back touch plate.
I've been struggling for ages on which handheld console to pick, because I'd really love to play some higher end console games when I'm out and about, but all of them just leave me wishing they were like the 3ds. There's just something innately gratifying about that book opening/closing feeling that goes along with it, where you can literally pick up and put down at the drop of a hat..
And then I look at all the different clamshells that get made, and none of them want to splash out on the second screen. Even though the DS/3DS library probably eclipses a dozen other consoles put together...

Is there emulators and roms already preloaded onto this device, even with buying the extra storage?
I'm still holding out for full-speed all-in-one GameCube/PS2/PSP emulation before I fork over the goods (and 3DS support would be amazing as well). Given that a lot of these old games already have some minor performance issues when running on their native hardware, having to endure further issues on top of that I think would diminish my enjoyment of the games a little too much for an underpowered system to be worthwhile.

If this price goes any higher theres no point when the 3+ or 505 are right there. If anything it should go down to $100 and compete with the 2S.

On the Gamecube emulator, how well do the _'Star Wars Rogue Squadron II/III/Rogue Leader/Rebel Strike'_ games run? Back in the day they were the ONLY reason to buy a GC. Two of the best games ever made.

Hello ☺️ out of all these that you have reviewed, which do you think is best for someone who mains wants to play PS1, PS2, PSP, and gamecube games?
I think that this device uses an old phone screen and phone screens are drawn from top to bottom, so it seems that any screen tearing is going horizontally.
So apparently Powkiddy is doing a pre-release for the RBG10Max 3 (NOT PRO) model now, and I was wondering if you had a chance to look into it and determine if there's any significant difference with the Pro version? Seems a bit weird that the Non-Pro version is releasing now, and I'm curious to see if it addresses any of the cons you discussed.
It's disgraceful for them to sell a finished product that way. It's sad because it has incredible performance potential.
I'm still deciding which hand held I want to buy, I want to get one that can play PS2 and N64 well, but it seems that every hand held has an issue. Either out of box or with specs, or with some other issue like button and joystick configuration.
I am just waiting for the handheld that will deliver on performance ergonomics,pocketability,price and durability.

This handheld causes me very mixed feeling. It's a wonder for price and performance, but a shame for many issues (WiFi, no Bluetooth, screen, overall build quality). I both would like to grab it but also feel it doesn't worth... In a certain point of view, this could be intended as a wasted opportunity. If the Retroid Pocket 2S had had this chipset or at least a similar emulation compatibility, it would have been the heaven.
I wish someone did a list of the bill of materials for these handhelds and the other ones that run linux like the Miyoo Mini because i remember that back in 2015 or something, i bought a cheap tablet for $30 or so and that thing emulated nearly every system available at the time. So, with that said, i find it a bit strange the cheapest of these handhelds still doesn't have the hardware similar to one of the cheapest things you could buy more than 6 years ago.
There's no incentive to lower prices because people are comfortable shilling out $70-90 for something that costs ~$30 to build.

@@TakiUdon if you pay three engineers for 3 months to design a handheld and only sell 2000 of them, that's a lot of per unit cost right there on top of the bill of materials and per unit manufacturing labour

Sup Taki. Any info on the Powkiddy RGB30 RK3566? It's on presale, and I'm not seeing ANYONE with a preview unit. That alone is a red flag, but it's got a 4 inch, square (I'm assuming 4:3) screen with a plastic body that I want. I'm drawn to the 405m, but my 351mp is smaller and already too heavy for long play. So the 405 would be heavier and its pricey. RGB30 is on presale for $90. Are you working on a preview? A quick heads up on D-pad and button feel would help me pull the trigger early. Pun intended.
I just received mine yesterday and was able to charge it in about 2 hours using a 20W USB-C PD charger. It didn't feel slow to me at all.

The promise of what should be a Mid Tier Handheld that can Do PS2/Xbox/GameCube/3DS/PSP Emulator seems impossible right now but the one that does at a 250 dollar or lower price point is the holy grail at this point
Orange Pi is planning to make a RK3588S handheld. RK3588S is strong enough to play PS2/NGC/Wii/3DS, it performs roughly on par with the Snapdragon 855.
Orange Pi claims the bill of materials is very low relative to the quality of the product, everyone is assuming it'll be somewhere in the $200-250 price range.
@@Apollo-iq1vx CPU wise yes, GPU side I not even sure that the g610-mp4 inside it can comfortably match or exceed the Adreno in SD 845.
@@samh5886 the Orange Pi 5 (RK3588S) has been proven multiple times to smoothly run PS2/3DS/NGC extremely well, so the GPU being a Mali means very little. Most emulators are more CPU bound than GPU bound anyway.
Kind of like how the Odin Lite's Dimensity 900 actually does slightly BETTER than the Odin's SD845 despite having an inferior GPU; like ~75% of emulation is CPU bound
i see this as a big W i was waiting for an on the go emulator like this that can run gamecube and ps2, 3ds is a bonus i guess but im for sure gonna grab one of these, i don't really mind the screen tearing and my old emulation device (modded psvita) cant handle n64 so forget about ps2 or gc.
Definitely more than one company doing that bit with the lack of Mario related ROMs, on a Miyoo Mini+ I ordered it had the full gamut of Zelda, Kirby, Metroid... but no Mario!
Playing 3DS games on a 3Ds will always be the best way unfortunately.

I bought this one just to play some PS2 Pro Evolution Soccer. I've replaced the sd card and reinstalled JELOS on the emmc and while it's playable it struggles a bit. Not sure if it's the hardware or my lack of knowledge about the software. I did change the cpu governor to Performance but the gains were minimal if noticeable at all. I wonder if this game would run better on an android build. I would just like to give shout out to the developing community. This device sure is promising but it's current state is a bit disappointing. It needs some care to fulfill its potential. I'm counting on you!

-It has 3DO? I can play Lucienne's Quest on the go. The 3DS is already handheld so I don't need the device to play that.
-Sleep mode doesn't work? That's a problem. I can do this with the 3DS and PSP when I need to get back to work quickly. That might be a deal breaker for me.
-It has Virtual Boy too? Sweet. I want to play Wario Land and Jack Bros. I tried running that on my 3DS and it ran too sluggish to be playable.
-My PSP can play PS1 games but I couldn't get Bugs Bunny Lost in Time to work. I was able to play Grandia and Final Fantasy 8 just fine. You can actually play 2 disc games by having isos for both discs and messing around with the memory card settings. You should have shown Spyro as an example.
-I forgot the PSP had Assassin's Creed. I heard it wasn't that good.
-With the PS2 I could play Ape Escape 2 on the go. I'll play the American version so I can hear Ash and Misty's voice.
-For GameCube I want to play Skies of Arcadia. If I can play it on the go I would have more time to play it. I tested it out on a modded Wii before but never got around to continuing it. I might try out Beyond Good and Evil as well since I have issues playing that on PC and have optimization issues. The camera is way too fast.
-If the sleep mode is fixed then I might try it out.
This seems like a good device for the price. It’s to bad for all the missing features and issues.

I was really hoping this had stacked shoulder buttons.
Got mine for 105 usd after coupon (which can be readily found just from google), so quite close to 100 USD.
Dont have time to experiment with it much yet though due to work.
1. Why film psp at 1x? From my brief tests it can run at 2x or even higher for a large number of games. 2x will give a larger resolution than the screen for a crisp image.
2. I tested some saturn games like sega rally but still can't maintain full speed with frameskipping disabled even at 1x.
What is the cheapest/lowest end android handheld that can do full speed Saturn without frameskip?
3. No joystick/cursor control for the 3ds ' touchscreen??
4. Is there any performance or features advantage duckstation standlone offers over swanstation retroarch core?

Its cool seeing how much more powerful these handhelds have gotten but to me its not powerful enough to justify all the downsides, if gamecube emulation was better and it at least had wifi would make this a million times better

Does Twilight Princess run good when you get to Hyrule Field? It always runs good in towns but when you get to the field, that's where it slows down.
