Scratch the Superglue repair! I just completed my Ross V-15 engine kit this week, using JB Weld. When I NEEDED to separate the cold piston from its hanger, it stunned me how much heat I needed to apply to get the bond to separate.

nice video! Thanks for sharing this. One thing to consider: super glue is used for temporary fixing of parts to "wax chucks". The part is released with heat, so when your engine reaches that temperature, the joint will fail.

How is lubrication accomplished in this engine? I see in the vid what might be some sort of light oil residue.

i know this is way past date but if you look at the disassembled version of this in the ross book you will see that the displacer is press fit not glued nor brazed so to get it back to spec you need a jig and press

Hi , I do like watching your videos, this one was particularly interesting as most of us would never have the chance to see the insides of the engine. You are obviously interested in these engines yourself. You said you had this connected to a generator to test the power, all well and good. Have you been able to make any practical use of these engines, say to use sunlight to charge batteries?

And I thought it was just the UK that had a lot of rain. Mind you, we could do with some rain now, its been very dry for a while now. I do enjoy your videos, very interesting.

Supeglue lets go at 180 degress or less. JB Weld claims 540 degrees. just a thought.

Nice that it was an easy repair. I was a bit surprised to see that they just use a rubber o-ring as a seal and that it doesn't melt away. Looking forward to see those test runs :-)

So, Dan? Remember the big compressor to stirling you had been working on?
Same proportionate scale, and pattern as this one. I bet you could use some scrap steel, and Automobile exaust tubeing to build a bigger copy of the little engines components, and then for the heat exchanger, some steel brake line with washers brazzed on as fins, and get the big one to run the same. Now having taken the little one apart? Do you see what I was saying before about the bigger one? The compressor pump?

You can get bags of those O'Rings at Home Depot or Lowes for pennies on the dollar, most hardware stores carry them as well as plumbing supplies. You can usually get them in bags of varying sizes or under $2.00 U.S. Currency, just bring yours with you, and match it up.

So how is the powering and prodcuing of electricity going ? Could you generate about 100W with the sun??

love the vids.. I think the tight fit of the piston, although may contribute to the power, may also have been the weak spot.. The excessive heat seized the piston.. left to cool on it's own, it likely would have freed up on its own.. I'm considering a taper design though.. wondering if the cylinder tapered giving a snugger fit just at the first part of the stroke.. would be best.. but widening up a little as the piston comes down.. tapering the cylinder would be the easiest i think.

Great vid Andy! I would love to have a motor like this to experiment with as you are doing. It sounds quite strong in the last vid to me and I would be surprised if you couldn't get much more than a 100W out of it. It would be nice to see the results of the generator setup showing volts and amps. I would also like to see the effects of adding a solar tube to help contain heat input, and maybe a small cooling system (water) ON THE COOL SIDE. I guess you Gould go a step further and let the cool side flow through the hot side as a and into a heat exchanger for hot water use.I'd love to have one of this type engine, it seems quite powerful to many I have seen on YT. Please do tell where you purchased these engines and thanks for your work and sharing, great vids!

If you built a small tube drilled with a very small dremmal tool bent in a circle, and fit around the exaust pipe heated end, you could run it on propain, or any other goodheat sorce, Heck if you could build the heated end from copper pipe it would work even better for your solar stuff, or maybe even thick walled brass from the hardware store.

@jdcmusicman i'm not 100% sure but i think they only work on a small scale, because the larger surface area requires an exponentially larger amount of heat so it becomes impractical. multiple engines is probably a better idea for higher power output. great engiune though.

Would you release the blueprint schematics for this model? Is seems strong enough to provide 12V - 0,25A using the right dynamo. I would like to try build this model to charge my batteries at night. I live in an Island SouthEast Brazil and saving power is important.

I appreciate your video's being an old shop tchr. Would you be able to use a micrometer and give us the Inside diameter and out side diameter of the displacer so we know what you mean by "loose, or 4 x as loose"? This would give us newbies a little bit of something to compare other Sterlings against what you have. - Many thanks, in advance.
Have a nice... well... damp day :-)

Dan I've been watching your videos allot. You seem to be the solar frasnel lens master. Could you tinker more with magnets with me trying to make a perpetual magnet piston similar to the stirling engine? I've been trying to get a magnet wheel to spin like allot of people but deceleration and cogging happens. You could possibly get around the opposite pole with a piston version. You should try to make!

No offense but you really didn't cover how it works, I get it that it is solar powered but what actually get the pistols to fire, Do the heads just get hot enough to where it acts like a steam engine, and if thats the case couldn't you run this off say a wood stove?
