The recent killing of a Muslim man by far-right Hindus for allegedly eating beef, has sparked debate within India.
Some place blame on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) government for rising tensions, so how worried should the world be about the rise of Hindu nationalism in India?
In this week's Headliner, Mehdi Hasan speaks to Shashi Tharoor, one of India's most talked about politicians, who has accused Modi of failing to address increasing communal violence since assuming power in 2014.
"I believe the Prime Minister, through his silence, has condoned some outrageous statements and ideas by his ministers…" Tharoor tells Hasan. "I believe that he, while he himself has so far not said the wrong thing, his silence, too, is tantamount to not saying the right thing and that's something [for which] as a Prime Minister, he can be held accountable."
The politician also speaks candidly about being hounded by the media since the tragic death of his wife.
"I don't believe anyone would have any reason to murder my wife. I don't believe there was a murder," Tharoor says.

Out of 1500 million Indians, there is only one Tharoor who can speak English very well because he spent a pretty good time of his life in Britain and improved himself. Is there any other such as Shashi Tharoor in India, NO. In Pakistan, the late Prime Minister of Pakistan Z. A. Bhutto and his daughter Benazir Bhutto were the most outspoken leader of Pakistan and there was no one in India to challenge their outspoken position. India Gandhi in 1972 at the time of the Shimla Agreement was in a very vulnerable position before Bhutto because Bhutto having had a dominant position in all respects. Please keep in mind she was the leader of a winner state but she was afraid of Bhutto's political acumen, wisdom and his fantastic and crispy English. Shashi is very well like Bhutto in English but his political credentials will be tested.
India in 73 years produced only one Indian politician who can speak English very well what's the next quality of Dr. Shahsi (let me remind you that Indians English is so rough and crude that Indians named it 'Inglish' (Indian English) Z.A. Bhutto made Pakistan an atomic power, he arranged Islamic Summit in Lahore, he strengthened Pakistan's military power, he sent millions of Pakistanis in the Arab world for getting jobs, he united the Muslim world and made Pakistan the leader of the Islamic world.
No one is sure that Dr. Shahsi will become the PM of India because the Gandhis will not tolerate all this. Secondly, no one can say with all certainty that Dr. Shashi will be a successful Indian PM because India is a Musailistan (having tons of problems), lynchistan and cow-vigilantes type of country. In international circles India is considered a volatile and fragile country. There are tons of issues in India and POVERTY is the leading issue, several African states are better than India.
If by the grace of luck Shahsi became an Indian PM thereafter his failure and successes will be studied and judged that whether he can only speak English fluently or can also prove his political ability and wisdom practically. It is said that in UNO he as an Indian diplomate was a total failure.
I think I've lost respect for Mehdi Hassan. He's a baiter at the best in this interview.
Fascinating interview at times. At key moments ( Kashmir topic ) Mr. Tharoor was not allowed to respond adequately. Mehdi kept cutting him off.

This interviewer, Mehdi is asking only one sided questions and very disrespectful in not allowing the gentleman to finish his answer. His question are one sided ...typical of muslims in the media. A place was created by Muslims in India for Muslims, it is called Pakistan, he should go there and live if he has issues which seem personal to him. India did not invade any muslim lands it was muslims and Europeans who came and massacred the Indians. This guy interview is so offensive and I am not Indian saying this. I am a student of history. This guy is typical of muslims all over the southeast asia.
