  • Air-cooled engines are legendary, lightweight, simple and elegant -- from the Porsche 911 to the cheerful VW Beetle.but that didn't stop Porsche and VW from dumping them. The air-cooled engine was a victim of two major automotive trends.

    Great video! Seems like there are some parallels between the disappearance of air cooled engines and rotary engines in passenger cars, hard to get high compression for emission reduction in rotary engines due to issues with tip sealing and limits on the amount of power/torque that can be generated without exotic workarounds, if I recall a video I saw on Engineering Explained a while ago

    I have not used the heater in my Audi A5 for a long time (almost a year).
    I turned the heater on and it made the engine not reaching the normal working temperature (90 deg C) and actually fluctuating up and down from 70-85 degrees for 26 minutes! This happened 2 times!
    After that, it got normal and now with and without the heater, the water temp is normal again. Do you think this was due to thermostat or water pump malfunctioning or the water in heater radiator being blocked or something because of not being used for a long time?

  • @gamersens2363

    Great video! The only question I have is, is the air cooled engine going to be pressurized? Since a water cooled engine is a sealed system and pressure builds in that, but for an air cooled engine since it’s driven by a belt from the engine, is it just going to be ambient air pressure?

    • @huntertomlin3909
      @huntertomlin3909 5 років тому

      Some do, except not electric they have a thermal clutch that engages when it reaches a certain temperature. You also have to take into consideration that 95% of air cooled engines are carbureted which means no fancy computers to control things as an electric fan.

  • @joshbobst1629
    @joshbobst1629 5 років тому

    Always love to see Cooley, but he didn't quite answer one of the main questions posed: what are the advantages of air cooled engines. The main one is cost. They require less metal, are less complicated, and quite a bit lighter. It's why you still see them in lawn mowers. A small mower engine can be as cheap as a hundred bucks. There is almost no advantage to the buyer of a used car. Air cooled engines will not make as much power, as consistently, or last anywhere near as long as, a liquid cooled engine. They are also very noisy, comparatively. There is this one very minor advantage, and it's one of the main reasons they were used so much in small airplanes until the last decade: the cooling system cannot fail as long as the vehicle is moving.

  • @hellcat1988
    @hellcat1988 5 років тому +6

    I wonder how much power you'd free up on an old air cooled engine if you binned the mechanically driven fan and installed an electric instead.

    • @hellcat1988

      @@brandonblack2095 It's been proven that moving from a mechanical fan to electric CAN free up HP on liquid cooled engines. My question is legitimate.

    • @T.A.N.826
      @T.A.N.826 5 років тому

      You could probably expect about 3 to 5 percent more power since the engine wouldn’t be driving the fan for less drag. But then again you would need some sort of temperature control to have a fan motor blow the right amount of air when it’s needed because you can’t have the engine run too cold as I believe gaps in the piston rings would allow so much blow-by gas when it’s running.

    • @darrenmorris869
      @darrenmorris869 5 років тому

      Electric fans need elecricity to fuction. Electricity has to come from somewhere. In both Porsche and VW air cooled engine the exact same pully that spins the fan also doubles to spin the alternator/generator. I highly doubt you can gain even 1% more horsepower by switching to electric fans on air cooled engines. Even that Engine Masters show illustrated even different TYPES of mechanical fans have different effects on horsepower.

    • @hellcat1988
      @hellcat1988 5 років тому

      @@darrenmorris869 Yes they do, but as another person pointed out, it would have to be speed controlled; much like a pc fan. Running at lower speeds would require less electricity, putting less load on the alternator than a typical automotive fan that only runs at it's max speed all the time.

  • @ScottOstr

    I have a question. Do you think electric only cars will last twice as long as gas cars??? No exhaust, no rubbing oil parts, no carb, reduced brake wear. Tesla says 1,000,000 miles is a possibility. 🤔 Your thoughts? A good subject for a video?

    • @medowatcher
      @medowatcher 5 років тому +1

      I think the battery technology is the limiting factor. If they can innovate a battery with a hundred thousand charge cycles then perhaps yes- but that battery is scaring lots of ppl from the used electric market, and rightfully so. Depreciation is difficult to predict.
