The lyrics are not dated. They are as true as ever. People still think that you can actually know someone thru speaking with them "virtually" online. Granted it's not a deep philosophical point, but I am glad that someone made the point because some people are so stupid in thinking that the virtual world brings us closer or that it can make an experience be so real. As Neil said in an interview, no virtual machine can allow you to experience bike riding through Cameroon because the first thing they would take away is the lack of electricity, the dysentery, and the bad food. Those things are a part of the experience. The bad is just as important as the good when it comes to understanding another culture or another person. People still don't get that, so I don't get how it is dated.
Count me as one of the few that actually digs this song. I mean the main riff is so sick and so heavy! Interesting to me that Neil isn't wearing IEM's here and also sticking with the trad grip. I know on the t4e songs he did trad but on the other songs for this tour he switched between that and matched. Glad he is back to match grip (mostly) now but admire him for reinventing his style and grip during this time period. And again Neil looks so intimidating--in a cool way.
I agree with you on that riff. For a lot of people, this won't be classic Rush, but I think it's an exceptional piece of music. As for the lyrics, the www was new when this was written, and probably newer to Neil, than most of the fans, at the time. The basic message is "no, you can't replace reality with virtuality, no matter how much you want to" - I think there is a relevance to that message, even more applicable today, where people spend hours and hours of their lives staring at glowing screens. (er, like I'm doing right this second!)
Vitreous Lamella I always loved this song, T4E was an album I listened to a lot. I was in high school when it came out and I pretty much wore the tape out.
+Vitreous Lamella Your not alone - I don't know why this and dog years get slagged off from t4e they are two of my favourite tracks from the album - I agree the guitar riff and techniques are awesome here
Neil sticks his tongue out at Alex 2:35 😂 love these guys!! They never took themselves too seriously, they never sold out and they gave us over 40 years of some of the most rockin progressive music to date. Inspired by great musicians themselves they translated that into an original expression of music that has touched and changed many lives in that time, from the lyrics of Neil to the powerful musicianship of the three, the world has never before nor will again know anything like what the world will always know and remember as RUSH!!
Saw this tour in Cleveland and had a great close to the stage side seat on Alex's side. After they finished this song, Geddy said, "Whoo, that was a loud one." I still remember that. They also played Time and Motion that night; a song they would later drop from the tour. It really rocked. That was an awesome concert but then again, they all were from Rush. Unlimited talent with a touch of class.
Olds Rocket 88 Consider yourself very lucky then. According to song statistics I found that song was played maybe 12-15 times before being dropped and never being picked up again. Something similar like that happened to me during the R40 tour, the second and last time I ever saw them live, they played How It Is, off of Vapor Trails, turns out with the exception of around 11 other performances the entire rest of the tour they played One Little Victory instead.
Love you neil! Miss you already. Sincere prayers for your family alex and geddy and. All us brothers and sisters. Im crying now gotta go. Not many heroes left
As someone who plays a lot of Rush on guitar, believe me when I say that the main riff is really REALLY hard. In fact, most of the Test for echo album has some of Alex's most difficult stuff. Deserves so much more love that it gets.
The main riff is simple but difficult to execute cleanly without having the other notes bleed to each other. The verse riffs for the track Test for Echo is the same for me, can play the notes but not as it should like Alex Lifeson does.
I've grown a newfound respect over the last several years for a lot of the songs off T4E and Counterparts, so seeing it performed live only enhances that. Too bad more of these tracks didn't last past 1997, but apparently they had their reasons....
The elusive neal acknowledges the camera and sticks his tongue out. He is human..lol.. i agree, this song rips..been a fan of rush for many years, thought I heard all of the live songs, this is the first for this song...and i totally love it
7/14/22 made my day again today. here's to putting my message in the modem and throwing it into cybersea, ohh what sorrow this band would endure less than 30 days after this show and beyond.. HOPE is what remains to be seen.. wishing to see my friends again someday soon., Ged Alex Miss you guys.. cheers to the professor Macallan raised clink
"I can feel the voltage from her fingertips" is just one of those bits (see what I did there?) I saw them in Dallas on this tour, and the girl sitting next to me grabbed my leg about then and squeezed. Goosebumps every time I hear this song.
I've been obsessed with the riff since September 10, 1996! It's so bad-ass...I wouldn't be surprised if it gets arrested at some point for vandalism, destruction of public property or some such crime....it's so bad-ass!
Such an out of the box thinking riff. Some accidental notes that together they still sound good but not in the way we’re accustomed to on average. Never heard something similar.
I gotta say, Rush commits themselves. They don't just play, they boogie, they get into it. If they put a song on the set list they play it big. Some cover bands, they're technically okay but lack enthusiasm. I get the feeling Rush would play their hearts out even if they weren't getting paid.
Aol and 28.8 modems...the internet was new and this is what neil and the guys thought about it. T4e and vapor trails...yeah man, those were the new days. The old days? A cos 8track!
A list has this as 180th best of 180 Rush songs. Yes, the refrain is not Rush's finest moment, but if this is Rush's worst song then Rush is easily the best band ever.
Remember hearing this song in my teens... Met my girl through social media. I definitely believe this song makes so much sense, and relates to today too.
With the brutal bass lines with that drum beat topped with super hooky guitar, can't go wrong!! But a song about the internet?? Well.. Okay, it was the 90's, so all you "Net boys" and "Net girls", Rush are forgiven!!
People defending the lyrics by pointing out they were written in 1996... I remember when this album first dropped, and thinking the lyrics were cringe even back then. You rarely heard anything about 'net' this or 'cyber' that from anybody online. That kind of jargon was used by those who didn't know much of anything about the Internet, but wanted to sound like they did. Same/same for phrases like 'surfing the web'. It was like the nerd equivalent of listening to an old person trying to speak jive. Despite that, and T4E being one of my least favorite Rush albums, I still like this track.
Some sort of sound issue, which IMO you can hear on the Geddy bass track for these songs that did get out (the hour long version is on the R40 box set).
Sound was fine, it was a camera issue in the second set, then of course during mixing Neil's tragedy happened, Alex wanted nothing to do with it, and Geddy just mashed together Different Stages and got it out and done.
Ok, just going off what the guys said. Maybe that was an excuse at a fraught time. However, I can't imagine Geddy is super happy with this clicky, scratchy bass sound (IMO).
Remember, this was NEVER released. It was in the vault until R40 came out. That said, pretty sure Geddy is fine with it since it continued to be his bass sound until the R30 tour.
I saved test for echo for later in life. I knew there would come a day.... I lost my race to rats. The one thing they did not count on is i would be back!!!
Well, this is a very meagre sound quality of one of Rush's mostly moving songs ever made. And yes, they can do it better in their very own homeland Canada..
You people are crazy
This song rocks
It is but it doesn't work well live. That's the problem.
The live version is better than the album @@jsullivan2112
This song rocks. The cross between the heavy riff, and Geddys voice is amazing.

When they say dated is because of the netboy netgirl and the put the message in the modem, but you know. It's true what you said
@@ziwaBasood yeah true but my comment wasn't in a bad way, I like the song
The “lost ship” fantasy is still very much a part of internet culture - social media is nothing BUT…
I miss Rush horribly.......

I don't understand how they came up with that opening riff. It sounds so good! No other band can make music like these guys do, they're amazing.
Vitreous Lamella I'm with you. I dig this tune. RUSH: The Greatest Band of All Time. ;-)
Vitreous Lamella I always loved this song, T4E was an album I listened to a lot. I was in high school when it came out and I pretty much wore the tape out.

never heard or seen this version before, very cool when Al goes to "acoustic" for a bit. love T4E.
Before Neil's tragedy. Poor guy did not deserve so much pain.

R.I.P Neil, thanks for all.
This album is one of my favorites!.RI.P. Neil. This was a one the greatest bands ever. There will never be another group that will measure up.
A very underrated rush song lifeson playing the prs is a good fit
The played on fire this tour. Blended the eras perfectly but more rocking. 2112 the red carpet treatment in its entirety.
Great lyrics. .. way before social media was even thought of. Neil was truly a genius
The composition is phenomenal.

Heavy! Underrated rush track
Heavy and hard.. Classic RUSH..
Geddys voice was perfect in this show! In a Geddys way, of course.
Really showcases Neil's performance and talent! So much incredible ROCK in this song!

I traveled from Maine to Washington state to see this show at the Gorge. Jesus this song kicked ass.
My problem with RUSH is exactly the same as my problem with drinking... I can't get enough it !!!

Yes, the lyrics are cheesy and dated. Who gives a shit? They work for the time and the song itself sounds awesome.
Dude what do you want? At that time in history the web and all this crap we use was just starting to take hold. It's more of a time piece than cheesy.
Yes the lyrics might not sound current now, but they perfectly capture 1996

Yeah the lyrics sound like a boomer trying to be hip to the jive. We just wouldn't have worded it that way back in '96. I thought they were goofy.
