    This is the recipe I use to prepare the egg tempera emulsion since the beginning of my painting journey back in 1992. Of course the recipe is ancient and since many of my 2000 subscribers ask me for it, here is a video to celebrate and thank each and everyone of you!

I'm currently studying iconography (from scratch) and last week we were taught to make temple, our master taught us to do 1 part of yolk and two parts of white wine, or else one part of white wine vinegar. I didn't know you could also do it with water and vinegar. It's always good to learn something new. Thank you! God bless you!

    This seems like a lot of extra steps. I just separate the egg by pouring the white into a glass, then roll it gently onto a folded paper towel, roll it very carefully to the edge of the paper towel that I sort of curl up into a funnel or spout, then pierce the yolk sac with a skewer and it pours directly into the jar. No need to use the tea strainer and funnel to get the membrane out; it just sticks to the paper towel.

    • @fevronija
      @fevronija 3 роки тому +4

      I actually thought it was a great idea, since you get more emulsion this way (literally all of the egg yolk is used up, nth/ goes to waste) and thus it lasts longer.. But, of course, that would be significant only for those who paint more..

    • @pauldempsey9327
      @pauldempsey9327 3 роки тому +2

      Vickery also strained his emulsion through a cheese cloth. Even if you separate the egg yolk and sack, I find a bit of it ends up in the emulsion no matter how careful you are. I'm not sure what the downside to a small bit of the sack protein ending up in your temper is. But there must be a problem with it otherwise why did all the old school artists go to such careful lengths to have a clean emulsion?

    • @hilarywhite2953
      @hilarywhite2953 3 роки тому +1

      @@pauldempsey9327 I thought you could use the tea strainer to hold the yolk after the white has drained off, then poke it through the holes in the strainer with a skewer and catch the yolky-goodness as it pours through the hole.

    • @pauldempsey9327
      @pauldempsey9327 3 роки тому

      @@hilarywhite2953 I wondered about that as well. I've tried that with a small strainer.. it did not work. Vickery would separate the yolk and sack, then additionally run it the yolk through cheese cloth to get the last bits of albumin out. I've been not worrying about it. I just carefully pinch the sack and prick it on the bottom with the end of an exacto knife. Someones suggestion below of using clove oil is interesting. That would preserve the emulsion for a long period.

    I have a huge molding issue!
    I mixed egg tempera with a teeny tiny amount of vinegar and stored the finished painting in a room. After a while, the painting got moldy on the egg tempera painted parts! For the painting ground I used a traditional mixture of chalk, pigment, rabbit glue and water. I suspect the vinegar.
    How do you prevent molding when painting with egg tempera?
    I don’t want to use dammar, Terpentine or linseed oil with varnish. I know this eventually prevents molding but I want to keep it simple and solvent free.

    what is the best to paint with the egg temperature on the canvas or something else?

    • @jeremiahembs5343
      @jeremiahembs5343 2 роки тому +2

      You can paint on canvas, but cotton canvas is rough and makes it more difficult. Linen canvas is better. But painting on wood is best for tempera. You can paint directly onto the wood or prime the wood with gesso made from rabbit skin glue and calcium chalk like you would for canvas sanding with fine sandpaper and brushing with flat brush to remove dust between layers before you paint.

      Ευχαριστώ για την ωραία ερώτηση! Το ξύδι είναι ένα ισχυρό αντιβακτηριακο και μερικές σταγόνες αρκούν για να κρατήσουν τα βακτήρια μακρυά. Αυτός είναι ο μόνος λογος που χρησιμοποιούμε το ξύδι. Μπορείς να βάζεις όσο κρόκο ξύδι, αλλά δεν έχει νόημα, και επίσης έχω ακούσει (δεν το έχω πάθει) ότι το ξύδι ίσως αλληλεπιδρά με κάποιες χρωστικές και σε βάθος χρόνου τις αλλοιώνει...
