  • 3 things you don't need when backpacking.
Many folks are told they need these 3 things, but you DON'T. In fact, they get in the way. Save some pack weight, money and on-trail hassles. Forget about these three UNNECESSARY luxury items.
Some may want to still bring these 3 items - no problem - remember it's about WANT rather than NEED!

Sorry, disagree about the camp shoes.
I have been a Search and Rescue member for 17 years in the mountains of BC. Feet get you into the bush and out. I have been on a few rescues of hikers whose shoes blew out. If they had a light pair of camp shoes it might have made the difference in hiking out. My camp shoes weigh very little, its well worth the extra weight for the safety they provide.
Love your videos!! Really enjoyed your GDT series! Great filming and production!

Great points. In fact I used to carry camp shoes for that same reason, then after 30 years of carry camp shoes, I never needed them once. So I stopped bringing them. That being said, your points are good and real. I suspect it could be situational. Example, on the AT there is always a store within a few days, yet the GDT - not so much! 😀

In cold conditions with water crossings light aqua slip on shoes are important. So are down booties in Alpine conditions.

Who wants to walk around camp in wet shoes? A pair of 6-8 ounce sandals will always be hanging off my pack. I would rather carry 12 pounds and have that extra 2 pounds of comfort clothing than be 10-pound ultralite and uncomfortable.

Mate, you're all over the place. 10D nylon isn't super durable, certainly different than 50D of other tents. I wouldn't be telling ppl to ditch that kind of equipment without giving a ton of context. Just because you don't like a groundsheet....or camo shoes...let someone decide for themselves....

Hey Zachary - good points. You are totally right about 10D not being super durable and perhaps a groundsheet will increase the longevity of your tent, however, that has not been my experience while camping in some of the nastiest places. Plus, although there are tents out there with a 10D floor, it actually represents a very small segment of the tents I see on the trail. Also if you choose a tent with a "fragile" floor to save weight and then add a ground sheet to protect it - you have lost the weight savings of the UL product. Perhaps I should have included more context in the video - agreed. Finally. I'm sorry if I left the impression I was not letting folks "decide for themselves"... I was just sharing my thoughts and experience with the intention of helping - you are free to decide whether to use it or not :). Thanks for your comments, you made some good points allowing productive discussions.

I have to agree with Dudley on this one. I got the impression he was giving his opinion based on his experience. Viewers can watch the video, consider Dudley’s opinion and make a decision for themselves.
      Keep em coming Dudley!

You don’t need to carry a poop trowel!

Agreed and a stick works. But I choose to carry one anyway. My QiWiz UL Original weighs 13 grams and takes up little space.
